Day in Pop Report for 05/15/2015
The Sun reports the charges were dismissed because the alleged victim "didn't want to testify." Police were unable to subpoena her and compel her testimony because she moved, without making the court aware of her new address. Drake's attorney confirmed that Savoury works for him in security and he is credited as providing backing vocals on his album Nothing Was the Same. Drake's reaction? He posted a celebratory Instagram when Savoury was released, having spent 10 months in custody awaiting the outcome of the case. Read more here.
Because of the situation, Mimi was forced to cancel Thursday night's show (May 14) but took to Instagram to deliver the news personally to her fans. "Hey guys," wrote Carey. "I've been fighting bronchitis for the past few days.. almost better but on mandatory vocal rest per doctor's orders. I'm so sorry to cancel tonight's show but I promise to make it up to you!!!. Love you always, MC." Read more here.
At the Adult Swim Upfronts, where the network announced their upcoming fall lineup, Cyrus took the stage wearing pasties--not unlike the ones she donned to induct Joan Jett into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame--and a pair of huge butterfly wings. Not to mention, she seemed to have forgotten her pants, wearing tights with a thong onesie over it. On the sweetly psychedelic track, Cyrus channels her buddy Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, who she's currently working with on a new album, and Lana Del Rey with a song that has her singing about dreams of being eaten by a tiger alongside Coyne. It's a song she's teased before, most recently this week when she posted a video of her performing the song on Instagram. But, to her this was the official debut, hence the reason she introduced the song by telling the crowd: 'No one's ever heard this s-t so get excited." Watch a clip of Miley performing here.
On the chorus of the spare ballad, Waits sings: "Take one last look at the place that you are leaving." It was also announced that Eddie Vedder will be the final musical guest on Letterman next Monday. As Consequence of Sound notes, if all goes similarly to recent performances by Dave Matthews Band and Ryan Adams, Vedder will likely perform "Black" off of Pearl Jam's 1992 album Ten. The song was a brief bit on the show back in the '90s. Monday night's episode will also feature Tom Hanks, and Bill Murray will stop by on Tuesday night. No guests have been announced for Wednesday night's finale, but one can expect it will be a cry-fest with wide array of guests and cameos. Watch Waits performance here.
Reopening on June 4, the park has announced that two new people will be enshrined with commemorative plaques: Jack White and Loretta Lynn, according to Pitchfork. Nashville mayor Karl Dean praised both White and Lynn in a statement, saying "They represent what is best about Nashville with music that spans multiple genres and generations. They are great ambassadors for the creative community in our city, and I congratulate them on this wonderful honor. Read more here.
Alan Wenkus clearly is in the latter camp, going from penning a script about West Coast rap legends N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton, to a new film about George Jones, country legend. The film will reportedly center around his rise to fame in the '50s through the '70s, including his substance abuse issues, brief marriage to Tammy Wynette, and his eventual nuptials with Nancy Jones, who helped get the songwriter clean. The clip features footage of Duff doing interviews, hanging out with friends and a performance of the song itself. "Sparks" is the third track released so far from the record, following "Chasing The Sun" and "All About You." "Breathe In. Breathe Out.," Duff's first album since 2007's "Dignity" includes collaborations with Tove Lo, Ed Sheeran, Matthew Koma and Bloodshy. Watch the new video here.
The pairing was part of the special 2-hour finale that also included performances by Fall Out Boy, Ricky Martin, Steven Tyler, Pitbull and others. NKOTB are currently playing dates on The Main Event, a tour that includes special guests TLC and Nelly. Launched just a few weeks ago, the 2-month North American run will wrap up in Buffalo, NY on July 2. Watch the Idol performance here.
The pairing saw the noted guitarist/producer and the singers perform a taste of Sister Sledge's "We Are Family", followed by three Chic tracks: "Le Freak", "I'll Be There" and "Good Times." Rodgers are Chic are gearing up for the launch of their first new album in more than 20 years, "It's About Time." The project features the recently-released lead single, "I'll Be There." Watch the Idol performance here.
The first teaser for the series featured no dialogue, but rather a montage set to music. Now, with a trailer, we get a little bit more of an idea of the tone and content of the second installment of the Emmy winning series. In the clip, we see McAdams doing some awesome knife fight training, looking buff as all heck. We see Vaughn ominously declare, "sometimes your worst self is your best self." We see Farrell looking down at his hands after apparently doing a whole bunch of punching. We see the Los Angeles freeways remarkably free of traffic. We see Kitch looking haunted. We see Farrell also looking haunted. Pretty much everyone appears haunted. After all, it is True Detective. We don't expect anything sunny to happen in this crime caper. Watch the trailer for True Detective season two here.
On Thursday (May 14) CBS announced that the guest list for the final three episodes of the shows will feature Tom Hanks, Bill Murray and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. Both Hanks (making his 60th appearance on the show) and Vedder are scheduled for the May 18 broadcast, with Vedder leading a special music performance backed by Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra. Murray, who was Letterman's very first guest when the Late Show debuted on CBS on Aug, 30, 1993, will stop by on Tuesday. It will be his 44th appearance. The guest list for the final show on Wednesday, May 20, remains a secret. Read more here.
Having released two wildly received albums, Run the Jewels and Run the Jewels 2 as free downloads, all eyes are on the duo of Killer Mike and El-P to return with even more boomin' beats and densely-packed rhymes. While it doesn't feature either of the rapper's distinctive vocals, El-P took to his Instagram account on Thursday (May 14) to tease a beat from the upcoming album, which appears to follow suit in the title department with the moniker Run the Jewels 3. Check it out here.
The lichen, a plantlike organism, that was found is called Japewiella dollypartoniana and is prevalent mainly in the Appalachian Mountains from Maine to Georgia. According to Castanea Journal, it was collected at Hangover Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the Unicoi Mountains. While the species has been known for several years, it couldn't be identified until it was found in fruit. This was what two researchers found on their Hangover Mountain summit. Read more here.
Trisha Yearwood: The Song Remembers When will run through December 2015 and tell the story of the singer's life and career. It will follow Yearwood's move from Georgia to Nashville to attend Belmont University. Part of her journey included giving tours at the Hall of Fame before she hit the big time. Yearwood's exhibit will include items and artifacts that span throughout her career as a musician, writer, TV host and more. Read more here.
Then we forgot about it, because the best dreams never come true. Until now. Transmitter, a live studio series, hosted Bleachers in a recent episode, and they performed a fully-fledged version of the cover. They've transformed it into a '80s power ballad, with squalls of emotive saxophone and sky-scraping synth chords. Jack Antonoff barely touches his guitar, releasing tense little squiggle of sound over the track. He sounds great--not too far off from Bruce Springsteen, in a very generous approximation. Antonoff slightly shifts the lyrics, as well--he refers to God as "she," and changes the last verse from "Tell Nori about me" to "Tell them all about me." Check it out here.
The original's menacing, trap-flavored rhythm has been retooled with a turned-up and stripped-back beat and dramatic horn blasts to create and even more dancefloor-friendly track. The remix is sure to get ample play at parties and festivals throughout the summer. But is there a bubbling beef brewing between Diplo and Rihanna? In a recent interview with the London Evening Standard, the producer insinuated that a recording session between the two wasn't exactly as smooth as he'd have liked. 'I was in the studio with Rihanna two weeks ago, still playing the game.," he said. "I was trying to convince her why she should do so-and-so, and thinking, 'Lean On is bigger than any of her songs around the world right now. Why am I even sitting here trying to negotiate?'" In an online Q&A with Japanese fans, McCartney fielded a question about the Gallaghers' dire situation. "My advice to them? Just get together and make some good music," he said. "But they have got to want to do it. I think a lot of people would like them to do that. They are pretty cool guys." Even though McCartney offered that advice, he did so fully aware that the chances of them actually taking it are dicey at best. Perhaps he knows better than anyone else that you can't force. So does that mean the characters he voiced will be, um, 'let go' or otherwise 'made redundant'? Not at all. According to a statement released by Simpsons showrunner Al Jean to Dave Itzkoff, an arts and culture reporter for the New York Times, these beloved characters still have a future on the show. "We do not plan to kill off characters like Burns and Flanders," the statement reads, "but will recast with the finest voiceover talent available." Read more here.
On May 17, Snoop will guest star as a rapper who, tired of Los Angeles, moves to the teen protagonists' suburban neighborhood to lay low for a while. He'll be called Street Dog, of course. In the process of exploring his new home, he has all sorts of crazy adventures with the titular Sanjay and Craig, all the while spitting hot fire. Check out a song he premieres on the show called "On Our Block"--he goes for a bike ride, gets some wings, and meets a girl who does DJ scratches for him with her jacket zippers. It's the hardest G-rated song you'll hear this month. Check it out here.
There is now a children's book interpretation of the much-parodied visual, at the hands of graphic designer Zak Tebbal. In the version suitable for North West, "Bound 2Gether," Kanye goes on a journey to find his soulmate Kim. Only instead of being topless on a motorcycle, the reality TV has been transformed into a chick, which is perfect for riffing off lyrics like "One good chick is worth one thousand chickens." The graphic interpretation of Kanye is pretty realistic. Read more here.
Curiously, she had no idea at the time that that the music she was writing was actually country. "I grew up on Top 40 pop," Ballerini tells Radio.com during a recent visit to our New York studio. "I didn't know what country music was, which is so funny because I grew up on a farm in East Tennessee. When I was writing them I didn't know where they would fit, and then I heard [Keith Urban's] 'Stupid Boy' on my friend's MySpace page." Ballerini went out and bought Urban's record, as well as albums by Taylor Swift, Sugarland and the Dixie Chicks, and thus began her country music schooling. The "Love Me Like You Mean It" singer has been a fan of Swift ever since, and it's hard not to compare the two. Both artists begged their mothers to move to Nashville in their teens, and both got songwriting deals at a young age. Much like Swift, Ballerini admits to stalking her fans on social media through hashtags and leaving comments on their Instagram accounts. So it comes as no surprise that Swift found herself a fan of Ballerini earlier this year when she tweeted about listening to Ballerini's EP. That single tweet earned her a good deal of new attention, and it's something Ballerini is still excited about. "As a young singer songwriter in country music, she's the one to look up to. She was a trailblazer for the rest of us," Ballerini says of Swift. "The fact that she was listening to my music is a really big deal to me. Girls need positive girls. I'm drawn to positive female artists, and I just want to be another one for other girls to be drawn to." Read more here.
"Real recognize the real, you a stranger," Mill raps before noting, "They were just cool with me hating, call them frenemies." Different than enemies, just so that's clear. Unfortunately Mill doesn't confirm whether he and his girlfriend Nicki Minaj are actually engaged on the track, even though Drake may have already done that. Maybe we'll have to wait for Mill's new album to see if he reveals that. No word yet on when said record will drop. Hear Mill's "Energy" (Freestyle) here.
It peaked at No. 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on its way to selling more 2 million copies in the States alone. The band's latest single, "Bright", is also from the debut project. The California pop outfit will perform at Rock In Rio USA in Las Vegas on May 15 on a bill topped by Taylor Swift before playing a series of European shows starting in Brussels, Belgium on May 19. Watch the Idol performance here.
The actor is being accused of not declaring his two pups to custom officials when he arrived in Queensland, Australia on a private jet last month to film the latest installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. The two dogs were reportedly discovered after a dog groomer posted a photo of them on Facebook. The Australian government, like many other countries, has strict quarantine laws for pets so that it hopefully "protect[s] people's health as well as animal and plant health." According to the Australian Department of Agriculture's website, Depp's "illegally imported dogs" should have been quarantined for a minimum of 10 days on arrival, longer if it is seen as coming from a riskier country or it shows signs of illness.
