Recap of top stories for 2006: July - Sep

Instead of just taking our usual Christmas break off and leaving you hanging until the 27th, we figured we'd use these "off" days to recap the most popular stories of the year. These were the most read individual stories from each month. Enjoy and have a rockn' Christmas.  We'll see you back with the regular Day in Rock report when we return on Wed 12/27!

Pink Floyd Founder Dies

DiR reports: [Very sad news as another legend has passed. Here is part of IGN's report] Legendary founding member of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, died Friday at the age of 60 due to complications from diabetes according to reports from the British media.

Barrett, who had spent the past 30 years of so living in seclusion, was the lyrical and musical mastermind behind the earliest incarnation of the seminal British psychedelic outfit which also included Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Rick Wright, and David Gilmour who joined the band in 1968.[see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

N' Syncer Gay

TMZ reports: Lance Bass says he's gay and in a stable relationship with a reality show star.

Over the last few months, TMZ shot video of Bass and "Amazing Race" winner Reichen Lehmkuhl, and although there was a buzz the two were a couple, they went to considerable lengths not to be seen in the same shot. In one video, as they walked through a park in New York together and saw the cameras, they immediately separated.

Now, Bass reveals to People he is indeed gay and in a "very stable" relationship with Lehmkuhl. Bass told People that he feared coming out while he was in the boy band 'N Sync because he felt "it would overpower everything." Child Rapist Singer

BW&BK reports: Swedish label I Hate Records (www.ihate.se) has issued the following message: "As a consequence of Steve McMillan's criminal acts, that he has confessed, we have decided to delete the THEE PLAGUE OF GENTLEMEN - Primula Pestis album. Thus the album will no longer be available through I Hate. We feel truly sorry for the other members of TPOG that has to suffer for Steve's deeds but we must do what we feel is right." 

Regarding the arrest and imprisonment of Steve McMillan, the label states:

Ozzfest Rape

Blabbermouth reports: Dan P. Blake of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Tinley Park police today are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a woman in a field outside the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre during the Ozzfest music festival over the weekend.

A shirtless man, described as about 30, approached the 20-year-old victim as she was leaving the festival after 8 p.m. Sunday on the far west end of an unused parking lot at the outdoor venue at 191st and Ridgeland Avenue, said Tinley Park police Cmdr. Phil Valois.

"She had a chance encounter with the subject, they talked for awhile and at some point he grabbed her and assaulted her in a grassy area of the parking lot," Valois said.[see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Idol Child Porn Bust

antiMusic reports: A former American Idol contestant has been indicted on child pornography charges in Utah. He reportedly videotaped two teenage girls engaged in "sexually explicit conduct" according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Daniel James "DJ" Boyd, 27, who was a semi-finalist during the hit television show's 5th season, was arrested last month in West Valley City after a 14-year-old girl contacted police. He entered a plea of not guilty Tuesday to federal charges of production of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

Weezer RIP

antiMusic reports: Sad news for Weezer fans, it looks like the band is finished. At least for now. Rivers Cuomo told MTV that the band is on indefinite hiatus. "For the moment we are done," he said. "And I'm not certain we'll ever make a record again, unless it becomes really obvious to me that we need to do one." 

So has the recent Ivy League grad given up music? "All this year, I've been feeling pretty creative and excited, so I've been writing a lot. I don't know what'll happen with these songs - if anything - I just sort of write them and I can't stop. I certainly don't see them becoming Weezer songs, and I don't really see the point of a solo career. So we'll just have to wait and see."- Click Here for the Full Story

Black Eyed Brawl

Gigwise reports: The Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am is being investigated for a fight in Germany this week � but it's got nothing to do with football.

Police are looking into the singer's conduct after a fight broke out at a nightclub in Berlin's 40seconds nightclub in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to reports the group's bodyguard got involved in a fight with the club's doorman, who was pictured with a bloody head. Lost Doors Track

blabbermouth.net reports: AOL Music has confirmed that former JANE'S ADDICTION frontman Perry Farrell has unearthed a lost track featuring the vocals of THE DOORS' Jim Morrison and will be releasing the song, "Woman in the Window", on his SATELLITE PARTY project, due early next year.

According to AOL Music, Farrell composed the music to complement a tape of Morrison reading one of his original poems. After a very brief musical intro, Morrison's vocals begin: "I am the woman in the window." The song is a potent reminder of how beautiful Morrison's voice could be as his sing-song vocals, reminiscent of "Love Street", are delivered against a musical backdrop Farrell describes as "a little down-tempo, a little chill." Poison Onstage Breakup?

KNAC reports: The gossip boards at Metal Sludge are on fire after last night's Poison concert in Atlanta. Here's are some samples: "Don't know what started it, but right before the encore Bret (Michaels, vocalist) and Bobby (Dall, bassist) appeared to be in a heated discussion and next thing ya know, Bobby slings his bass at Bret. Rikki (Rockett, drummer) and the roadies had to come in and separate them. Bret then went on to apologize and say how we may have just witnessed the last Poison concert ever. Bobby later came out and finished the song... guess to give the fans what they paid for." 

Another fan in attendance issued this commentary: " �Bret comes out and apologizes to the fans. He said, 'that s*** has been building up for 20 years.' He then explained, 'We are like brothers, and sometimes brothers want to knock the f*** out of each other.' He apologized for not finishing the show with 'Talk Dirty To Me' and then said, 'Atlanta, you may very well have seen the last concert by Poison in its current formation.' Aerosmith Cancer

KNAC reports: Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton will be sitting out a few gigs at the beginning of the band's upcoming Route Of All Evil tour. Hamilton has just completed a seven-week course of radiation treatment for throat cancer. He will be with his family recovering and will join the tour in mid-October. He and his band mates look forward to his return. E! Dishonors Dimebag

DiR reports: TV hits new lows every damn day but this is getting down there. It appears that the folks at E! are producing a show called "25 Most Chilling Hollywood Murders" and actually hit up the Pantera camp about licensing footage of Dimebag and want to re-enact his murder. Below is only part of the response Jane Hoffman reportedly sent E!. "I ask that you all please take a moment from your busy days and close your eyes. Live out the fantasy of playing your favorite instrument onstage. Your closest friends in the world surround you, either in the band or in your crew. From one side of the stage, a man approaches. Thinking he's a security guy or a drunk fan who's just a bit out a line, you continue to perform. Two seconds later, he lifts his arms, aims a rifle at your brother, your best friend, your buddy and blows his brains out, not three feet from where you are. In the nanosecond it takes you to comprehend the magnitude of what just happened, he does it again ...and again ...and again ...and again ...and again ...and again before taking aim and murdering additional members of your extended family as well as fans that have come to see you play. Two of your crew are shot but survive, but of course, will never be the same again.

Now imagine it's a few years later and you turn on the TV set. Just in case you may be having at least a five minute respite from that scene that plays over and over in your head, just in case .....you flip through the channels and there it is. Again. Only with some two bit actor who thinks this is his big Hollywood break�.. The answer is no, and on behalf of everyone that was there that night and everyone that misses him every day, you can take that no and shove it up your collective asses. Don Vito Pedophile?

MTV reports: Vincent Margera - better known as Don Vito to viewers of "Viva La Bam" - was arrested in Colorado on Friday and held on suspicion of two counts of sexual assault on a child, according to a spokesperson for Colorado's Lakewood Police Department.

Margera, 50, is suspected of inappropriately fondling or groping 12- and 14-year-old girls during separate incidents at a signing event at Woodward Skatepark at the Colorado Mills mall in Lakewood, Colorado, Friday night. [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Aiken Sued

E! reports: Clay Aiken is finding that fame comes with a thousand different downsides. 

The American Idol runner-up has been sued by the author of an "unauthorized tribute" titled Out of the Blue--"Clay" It Forward, who accuses him of defaming her and conspiring to hurt her book sales. 

According to her court documents, Jeannie Holleman was a neighbor and lifelong friend of the McGhee family--Raleigh, North Carolina, residents who took in Aiken and his mother, Faye Parker, after Parker left her abusive husband, bringing her young son with her. Korn Murder Arrest

MTV reports: Atlanta police arrested 24-year-old Michael Scott Axley on Monday night and charged him with murder in the beating death of Andrew Richardson, who suffered a fatal brain injury at the July 30 date of Korn's Family Values Tour.

According to police and eyewitness accounts from Richardson's friends, Axley and Richardson got into an argument during the concert and Axley allegedly punched Richardson, sending him crashing to the concrete and causing a fatal brain injury. Tool Riot

Blabbermouth reports: NBCSanDiego.com reports that video footage has surfaced of the incident Saturday night (August 5) when nearly 100 fans were hurt after thousands of rock fans surged forward at a San Diego performance by TOOL.

The Los Angeles band was the headliner Saturday night at the Street Scene 2006 music festival in the parking lot of the Qualcomm Stadium. The group had just taken the stage.

"Everyone was getting pushed up toward the front," said Eric Hanau, who was at the show. "People were getting crushed." 

In the end, more than a dozen people went to the hospital after being crushed. One person is being treated tonight for life-threatening injuries. Blabbermouth reports: According to MTV.com, Tom Morello was among approximately 400 protesters arrested early Thursday evening (September 28) during a march to raise awareness for immigrant hotel workers' rights.

Screech Sex Tape

TMZ reports: [since he has attempted a music career as well, we're featuring this. That and it's just too funny] TMZ has obtained portions of the latest celebrity sex tape, featuring former "Saved by the Bell" star Dustin Diamond, who played Screech. To say the least, the video is unique and, dare we say, entertaining.

David Hans Schmidt, who has become famous in the sex tape industry by peddling videos featuring Paris Hilton, Colin Farrell and others, claims ownership to the Screech tape. It was shot in a hotel. Diamond is holding the camera and narrating, as he engages two women in various combinations and positions.

Willie Nelson Drug Bust

TMZ reports: Willie Nelson was issued a misdemeanor citation for drug possession early today when his tour bus was stopped in Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana. 

TMZ spoke with a spokesperson for the Louisiana State Police who said "The tour bus was stopped on a common interstate vehicle inspection, and when the trooper approached the bus door a strong odor of marijuana was detected. Their source says, "Kevin Federline took Britney to the hospital in the evening hours of September 11 to prepare for the Cesarean birth." They say her mother and sister were present at the birth. 50 Cent Arrested

TMZ reports: TMZ has confirmed that rapper 50 Cent (aka Curtis Jackson) was arrested around 2:00PM Friday afternoon in Manhattan. Law enforcement officials in an unmarked car pulled over the star's silver Lamborghini at the corner of 8th Ave. and 35th Ave. in Midtown New York after they say he made an unsafe lane change.

Police tell TMZ they removed Fiddy from his car and cuffed him in front of several witnesses. Because of the crowd that began gathering around the scene, cops determined it to be an unsafe situation so they took him to a police station down the street from the scene.

Police issued 50 four summons: one for an unsafe lane change, one because his driver's license had expired, one because his Lambo is unregistered with the state and another because the car is also uninsured. Rancid Seizure

punkbands reports: Lars Frederiksen collapsed during Thursday night's Rancid show in Montreal. punknews.org ran the following account... : "About halfway through the show Frederiksen suddenly collapsed while the band was performing the song "7 years down" from their Let's go album. The band was playing and then suddenly stopped when guitarist/vocalist Lars Fredrikssen fainted. Guitarist/vocalist Tim Armstrong and bassist/vocalist Matt Freeman rushed to their bandmate lying on stage, looking very preoccupied. 

After a couple of minutes, Fredrikssen was helped off stage by bandmembers and roadies. The crowd anxiously awaited news from the band for about 15-20 minutes. Tim and Matt came back on stage to announce Fredrikssen had suffered a seizure and was hurried to a Montreal hospital.
