Daniel James "DJ" Boyd, 27, who was a semi-finalist during the hit television show's 5th season, was arrested last month in West Valley City after a 14-year-old girl contacted police. He entered a plea of not guilty Tuesday to federal charges of production of child pornography and possession of child pornography.
He also faces state charges. The Salt Lake County D.A. has charged the singer with a single count of sexual exploitation of a minor (a second-degree felony) 11 counts of unlawful sex activity with a minor (a third-degree felony) and two counts of unlawful sale or supply of alcohol to minors (a class A misdemeanor). A preliminary hearing on those charges is scheduled for July 25th and his federal trial is set to begin September 18th. If convicted on the federal charges he could be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison. The mandatory minimum for the production of child pornography charge is 15-years. He is being held in the Salt Lake County jail on $100,000 bail.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that "Boyd allegedly had sex with one of the girls at least 10 times between April 1 and June 1 and once with the other girl between May 1 and June 1, according to a complaint filed in the state court. On one occasion during that time, Boyd gave the girls alcohol and videotaped himself having sex with them."
