Day in Pop Report for 01/21/2015
The singer/guitarist/former General Hospital star was sued by 45-year-old Vicki Calcagno of Liverpool, N.Y., who said she suffered serious injuries when Springfield fell into her during a 2004 concert in suburban Syracuse. She said Springfield's buttocks hit her head, causing lasting injuries. Springfield was so happy after the verdict the he photobombed a local reporter discussing the case. With that business out of the way, fans can look forward to a new Rick Springfield album soon(ish). Earlier this month, he tweeted a photo of him and his crew in the studio, noting that they were celebrating the completion of the recording of backing tracks by wearing pajamas. Read more here.
"For years I have wanted Comedy Central to roast me," Bieber tweeted. "They said only if I provided them w/ more material so for a year now I have worked hard. Finally after all that hard work for my 21st bday it's happening." The special will tape in L.A., with tape and air dates to come--but if the birthday mentions are any indication, look for one of the two to be on or around his birthday of March 1. He tweeted "For years I have wanted Comedy Central to roast me. They said only if I provided them w/ more material so for a year now I have worked hard- Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) January 20, 2015" Read more here.
Chance and Tyson happen to appear on the same track, "Iconic." Clearly, we're all looking forward to hearing that. It's also been reported that Kanye West, Diplo, Sophie and Nas all have production credits on the album. Madonna has definitely been very open about working with Diplo, who's admitted it got "super weird." The tracklist comes weeks after a batch of Rebel Heart tracks leaked, including one called "Two Steps Behind," which was believed to be about Lady Gaga. Madonna says no, and clearly didn't think it was good enough to make the cut since it is not on this final tracklist of the album. But we imagine this won't be the last time we hear about this song. Check out the tracklist for Rebel Heart, out March 10, here.
The tour kicks off on May 12 in Las Vegas for a five-night run at Planet Hollywood. He'll be making stops in New York for Governors Ball, Florida, Ohio--basically any U.S. state, he's going to be there. Al will be on tour for a while, perhaps dashing our hopes that he'll become the bandleader for Stephen Colbert's Late Show band. He's in British Columbia on Sept. 8, the night Colbert premieres. Check out the full list of Weird Al tour dates here.
So, the Icelandic chanteuse has done the only logical thing: she has just gone ahead and released the album, similar to the move Madonna made last month. Within the next 24 hours, Vulnicura will be available digitally on iTunes and anywhere else you buy MP3s. The physical release of the album will still come in March as planned. Bjork has released the following statement with the release: i guess i found in my lap one year into writing it a complete heartbreak album . kinda surprised how thoroughly i had documented this in pretty much accurate emotional chronology '. like 3 songs before a break up and three after . so the anthropologist in me sneaked in and i decided to share them as such . first i was worried it would be too self indulgent but then i felt it might make it even more universal . and hopefully the songs could be a help , a crutch to others and prove how biological this process is : the wound and the healing of the wound . psychologically and physically . it has a stubborn clock attached to it . New Kids On The Block will hit the road this summer with TLC and Nelly on the bill. The tour is called The Main Event, and kicks off in Las Vegas on May 1. Tickets go on sale Jan. 31. The band made the announcement on ABC's Good Morning America. Donnie Wahlberg (who stars in CBS's Blue Bloods) noted that the stage will offer some fans a rather intimate experience (at, we gather, high VIP ticket prices). He said there would be "bar seats around the stage so our fans can literally sit right on the stage and converse with us, hang out and heckle us, and we can share their snacks and drinks if we want to." Scotty McCreery has been tapped as opening act during the tour, which kicks off on May 29 in St. Louis, Missouri. The tour dates all are scheduled after to the country trio's previously announced Las Vegas residency at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, which runs Feb. 25-March 14. In addition, the band have a handful of festival appearances on the docket as well. "2014 was such a great year for us on the radio and on tour," said Flatts member Jay DeMarcus in a press statement. "We had a few weeks off at the holidays, and now we're getting ready for the first-ever country residency at The Joint at the Hard Rock in Vegas. Those shows are going to be the ultimate way to kick off our 2015 tour, where we can try new things and pretty much do whatever the hell we want. We're having a blast with it, and we'll be counting the days til the buses pull back out of Nashville for opening night." Read more including the cities for the tour here.
And that's what makes the video for her collaboration with Rita Ora refreshing. With a song that could have received a very traditional push to match its sonics, instead we have Charli dancing like a loon for the camera while looking cross-eyed. We have Charli booty-dancing with a chubby shirtless dude. We, essentially, have Charli XCX being her funny, uninhibited self. While her ability to craft a hook and her impeccable taste-level for production are the main reason for her success, the video for "Doing It" is a reminder that Charli XCX's personality isn't to be discounted, and it isn't going away. Check out the video for "Doing It," from Charli XCX's Sucker, here.
'I look forward to channeling the energy and spirit from the X Games into a performance Austin will not forget," Minaj noted in a press statement. She'll be joined by others on the Superstage, though the other performers have not yet been announced. Another stage, the Sound Factory stage, will include Talib Kweli, Pennywise and Deltron 3030, with others set to be announced at a later date. You can read more here.
"Worth It" is a bouncy, upbeat piece of party-ready R&B. It combines the glowing, minimal chords of DJ Mustard with an infectious sax loop reminiscent of Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty." In short, they're capable chefs working with a sure-fire recipe to achieve worldwide club dominance. The 5H girls have also invited a man into their midst: LA up-and-comer Kid Ink makes a guest appearance, rapping about how he wants you to "bring it back like you left something." His addition makes it a sexy, brash affair with little time for anything other than booty-shaking. Check it out here.
"I'm obsessed with Bruno Mars' records," Rhett told Rolling Stone Country. "I'd give my right leg to be able to sing like that dude." Rhett admitted that he and his bandmate Josh Reedy took a lot of time rehearsing "When I Was Your Man" before they hit the studio. "After soundcheck, I'd sit there with Josh and we'd play it over and over, with Josh playing keys and me singing. We'd work on the phrasing, the breathing, the notes, the key' I think we had to lower it, like, five keys before I could sing the song, because Bruno sings so high." Rhett and Reedy took to Nashville's Creative Caffeine Studios to record the stripped-down track with Rhett on vocals and Reedy on piano. "We kept the video really simple," he said. "I wanted everyone to see that all we did was go in there, grab a mic, play the piano and sing the whole thing down. It's a live take with a live vocal. The whole thing wasn't nearly as funny as I thought it would be. It was serious. The moment Josh started playing and I started singing, I felt it. That song gave me chills the first time I heard it, and it still does." Watch it here.
Yes, none other than Kid Cudi is fronting their new magazine ads. Paired with actress/model Chloë Grace Moretz as the new faces of Coach's ad blitz, March publications will feature Cudi sporting high-water pants, leather accessories, stylish tops, and shoes with no socks. This is not Kid Cudi's first brush with the fashion world. He was on that HBO show, How to Make it America, for one. Complex notes that the campaign, dubbed "Dreamers," shies away from Cudi's normal streetwear look, but Coach has a reasonable explanation for Kid Cudi's appearance. See the ad here.
D'Angelo has never appeared on Saturday Night Live before--in fact, he's barely appeared on TV at all for the last decade or so, following his self-imposed exile in the wake his previous album Voodoo, released 14 years ago. Now that's all about to change. The singer released Black Messiah last month--the tour de force project showed that the previous fourteen years weren't spent in vain; rather, he was gearing up for just the right time. Now we'll get to hear how some of those songs sound in a live setting on the hallowed grounds of SNL. Read more here.
The teams had been decided--J.Lo and Fallon vs. actor Anthony Mackie and comedian Steve Higgins--and J.Lo was already bummed that she and Fallon didn't get to start the game. "Ah, why does he get to start?" she lamented. "Because, trust me," Fallon responded. Already, the game is heated as it turns out that Mackie also doesn't like to lose. 'I had to get rid of Taboo in my house," he said. "I start some fights." J.Lo, dressed in a pink dress, was jumping around throughout the game and her excitement never wavered. While she didn't win the game, she kept the guys, particularly Fallon, distracted when trying to act out the phrase Bottom Line as she pointed to, well, her bottom. As the game came to a close, Fallon finally figured it out. "That was the best round of the game that I've ever played in my life," he said. J.Lo, on the other hand was less than pleased. "I'm so mad. I hate you all." Watch it here.
During the TV interview, a reporter asks DeAndre a few questions about his performance during the nights game against the Boston Celtics; Jordan had just come off a strong showing, with 12 rebounds, six blocks, two steals and one assist. Jordan tries his best to answer, but accidentally ends up blowing off the reporter's questions, his head cocked to one side as he nods up and down. Was he trying to dodge the questions? No, he had something else on his mind: specifically, the music of Tupac, which was booming out of the arena's speakers. In a moment of rapture, Jordan was transported elsewhere. "Sorry," he tells the reporter. "I was listening to Tupac." Watch it here.
Tracey, "You do bare a resemblance to the striking Amal Clooney, has anyone ever told you that?" Ann, "I've never heard that but thank youThat's so going to be the best thing that happens to me today." Hathaway not only flattered by the comparison but also just as "fascinated" with her as the rest of us, "I hope that one day I become half the woman she is, she's so accomplished and it's so thrilling to look at someone and say 'wow you really are making the world a better place'." Anne and her husband Adam Schulman co-producing "Song One " together, the first producing project for them both. Anne getting emotional talking about her hubby, "He's greatYou know it sounds really silly, but I'm excited to see what he's going to wear to his first press day as a producer, shoot, I just got teary." Anne continued, "We both worked so hard on this, but it's whatever when it's you, but when it's someone you care about as much as your husband, I'm just so proud of him." Hathaway playing a woman who discovers her brother's music after he gets in a car accident in "" explaining how the film is different from others, "It's a movie that believes deeply in the power of music, if that speaks to you when you hear that then this movie is for you, but if you're just someone who just thinks music's okay and listens to it, this might not be the movie for you." "The kind of luxury now is, anybody with a certain amount of success, if you have a kind of musical being, you can go out and start a band and capitalize on your work in other areas," said Depp, who was in Australia promoting his new film Mortdecai. "But I hate the idea, 'Come see me play the guitar because you've seen me in 12 movies.' It shouldn't be [that way]. You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music." So far, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts frontman Russell Crowe, 30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto, She and Him frontwoman Zooey Deschanel, ex- Dogstar bassist Keanu Reeves, GRAMMY-nominated banjo player Steve Martin, solo artist/Pete Yorn duet partner Scarlett Johansson, half of the Bacon Brothers duo Kevin Bacon and two-time Oscar winner/eight-time GRAMMY winner Barbra Streisand have yet to comment. Depp's comments would certainly include a band called P. Funny about that, because it's the '90s band for which Depp himself played guitar alongside Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes. They even released a self-titled album in 1995 on Capitol Records, and while the Buttholes were signed to that label at the time, it's unlikely that a major label would have been interested in a side project from the band's singer if not for Depp's involvement. At the time, the actor was riding high on critically hailed films including Edward Scissorhands, What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Ed Wood. Of course, Depp doesn't have a problem with sharing his six-string skills with his friends in bands who need the help. In recent years, for instance, he's made musical contributions to records by the New Basement Tapes (watch "Kansas City" above), Aerosmith and Oasis, among others. And he's been known to jump on stage with Willie Nelson, too. Read more here.
While Perry and Watts might seem like a random pairing, Cole and Earnhardt aren't as surprising of a match. In fact, just this past year on his third studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, the rapper shouted out the pro driver on "Note to Self." So naturally ESPN inquired about this in a story dubbed, "Dale Earnhardt Jr. and J. Cole: The Perfect Strangers." The shoutout came about after J. Cole read an interview with Earnhardt where he found out the 40-year-old was a fan. "There was an interview Dale Jr. did that asked him what he plays before races, and he said 'J. Cole 'Power Trip,' which freaked me out!," Cole reminisced. "What is Dale Earnhardt Jr. doing playing my s-? How did he even find out about it? You don't think somebody on that level would ever hear your stuff. From there, I never forgot. I was always like, 'Yo, I ride with Dale Earnhardt Jr.'" When he was working on the album's outro, he decided to throw Earnhardt's name in the mix. "I'd been working on the album for a year, and I was in such an ecstatic mood--I felt like I won. So while I'm shouting out everybody, I was like, 'I may as well pretend a shoutout, somebody I have no idea who they are, just as a joke.' So when I was picking a name, I chose his. And it worked out crazy." Read more here.
Appearing to be a promotional campaign for the show, the posters feature members of the cast underneath the heading "Black Wives Matter." It's of course a play on the rallying cry "Black Lives Matter." Bravo insists it's not behind the campaign. "These posters were not created by or in any way affiliated with Bravo," a Bravo spokesperson told Zap2it. Read more here.
WWD reports that Fendi asked each to "personalize their own 3Baguette handbag--a style launched at the end of last year that reinterprets the Fendi accessory with a more structured shape and the FF logo becoming a lock rather than simply a decorative element." "They had free rein, choosing their favorite colors, favoring their own personal tastes. It also shows that nothing is impossible with the incredible artisans at Fendi," Fendi chairman and chief executive officer Pietro Beccari told WWD. In addition to designing the 3Baguette Rihanna, along with SJP and Feinstein, has designed a micro-baguette. Read more here.
