Day in Pop Report for 01/14/2015
According to Entertainment Weekly who spoke with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, patrol officers responded to a 4:42 call at the Cromwell Hotel located on the Vegas strip where a "verbal or physical altercation" had broken out between an estimated 30 people. The special events officers on duty at the hotel were attempting to separate the crowd, when an officer took Tesfaye aside. The singer then allegedly punched the officer in the head. Read more here.
TMZ posted the footage, which features Spears inside a Pita Pit, rushing to her friend's aid after she was hit over the head with a bottle. Then, Spears goes behind the counter, picks up a giant bread knife and proceeds to brandish it at the alleged perpetrator, barely flinching when intercepted by one of the workers. Eventually, the employee gets the authorities on the phone and Spears puts the knife down, but god, what an exhilarating few minutes. The Daily Dot reports that the details of what happened to cause the fight, or what has occurred since then, are unknown. Spears herself has been mum on the subject as well. Watch the video here.
According to Billboard, Azalea filed a lawsuit in September after she got word that Williams had unreleased music and an alleged sex tape in his possession. According to the complaint, Williams "downloaded the entire contents of Azalea's personal computer," which included unreleased master recordings and had already sent some of the songs to various music companies. Several music companies later claimed that they had secured the rights to release an EP from Azalea from these unreleased masters. However, Azalea said they got these rights through forgery of her signature. After a lengthy debate on how the companies got the use of her signature, the judge sided with Azalea (real name Amethyst Kelly). "The Court is thus left with sharply conflicting testimony regarding the circumstances surrounding the Recording Agreement," Judge O'Connell wrote. Read more here.
Garmo's dream of meeting Eminem spread on social networks via the hashtag #GetGageGarmoToMeetEminem, when a local non-profit the Rainbow Connection stepped in to help facilitate the meeting. "On Thursday (Jan. 8), we were told that Gage wanted to meet Eminem, and we also were told that time was very limited," Rainbow Connection executive director Mary Grace McCarter told The Detroit News. "The fact that Gage was so very ill (meant) we just really got all hands on deck, but it is Eminem and his folks who really saved the day. Everything was dropped and for (Eminem) to come to Gage's home and sit next to him and talk to him was really something very special." McCarter said that the two talked about hip-hop and football during their meeting. Read more here.
In this instance, Leto has snapped up an historic former military compound commonly referred to as the Lookout Mountain Laboratory for $5 million. It's located in the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles. According to Variety, the site "was originally built in the early 1940s and was used until the late 1960s as a military film studio where, among other classified projects, a small army of filmmakers and photographers with top security clearance made training films and documented military research on atomic bomb tests." Curbed L.A. adds that the site was closed in 1963, after nuclear testing was moved underground. Read more here.

Yup. Rihanna, who long-dated Chris Brown to the objection of pretty much everyone, who may or may not have caused Jay Z and Beyonce's sister Solange to brawl in an elevator, has been seen smooching the heartthrob of women everywhere since the '90s. The Mirror has full coverage of the alleged kiss, putting both at the Playboy mansion over the weekend after a supposed week of rumors linking the pair. Read more here.
For one fan, 25-year-old Rebekah, that dream became a reality. What exactly comes in a SwiftEx box? For Rebekah, it was a personal note from Taylor, a hand-painted picture by Taylor (along with a polaroid of her making it), a necklace that belonged to Taylor, and a check for $1,989 that came with a note that said, "Now you're $1989 closer to paying off those student loans." So Rebekah did what any fan in her position would do: she posted a video of her unwrapping the box, naturally. In it, you can check out all of its contents. "I was so nervous I couldn't even read the letter and totally butchered it," she wrote. "I was just in such shock that Taylor had taken her time to think about me and send me something. I still don't think I've really processed it all, I feel like I'm just in this crazy dream. I couldn't even form words when I opened everything, luckily my mom took a minute to thank Taylor for me. Taylor, thank you, thank you, thank you. I know I've said it and I'll probably say it a million more times because this means more to me than you could imagine, I love you!" The rapper has since deleted all of his old Instagram pictures and videos--including the controversial ones and the noncontroversial ones alike. But Gates curiously also deleted his music-centric posts and his other long rant video posts, which he had developed a following for. The only posts up at the moment are ones he uploaded Monday night and Tuesday morning, which suggest he's trying to wipe the slate clean and start anew. Among them is what appears to be a promo for the video for "Luca Brasi Intro" off his recently released Luca Brasi 2 mixtape. Read more here.
'We helped edit a lyric video for 'Get It' using live footage from a handful of festivals and shows we played in the last couple years," frontman Matt Johnson said in a press release. "Going through that footage really made it hard to believe how lucky we are to have the best f--g job in the world." The clip captures the exuberance that the pair have become known for, and their optimistic spirit can best be summed up by a quote Johnson has on the album: 'The best era of music is right now and we're doing our best work yet." Check out the clip for "Get It" here.
The festival is clearly gunning for increased national recognition, with headliners as big as anywhere else this festival season: Foo Fighters, Beck, Zac Brown Band and Skrillex. Hangout takes place May 15-17 in Gulf Shores, Ala. Spoon, TV on the Radio, Foster the People, Phantogram, and Major Lazer will also appear, among many others. Read more and see the full lineup here.
Beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Bonnaroo's BLAM event will slowly reveal the lineup by having fans call in to 1-844-ROO-2015 to get a piece of the puzzle to share on social media using the #bonnaroo hashtag. Coming to Bonnaroo in 2015? Billy Joel, Mumford & Sons, Deadmau5 and Kendrick Lamar are among the headliners, with other artists including Florence + the Machine, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, My Morning Jacket, Bassnectar and many more. In an interview with Radio.com last year, Rucker talked the new album and hinted at a few songs that could make the record. While Rucker said he doesn't think the album will be a party record, per se, there will definitely be some exuberance speckled throughout. 'We wanted to have a little more fun with this record," he said before talking about title track 'Southern Style,' a song he wrote with Rivers Rutherford. 'The opening line is 'Big blond hair too much makeup, high heel boots that lace-up, got two first names that came from her grandmas on both sides.' It's one of those country songs that I love." Another song, 'I Sang" he also wrote with Rutherford and Tim James and is a song about being a singer. Admitting that he was never the best player on the team, it's about realizing he'll never play in the NFL, so he decided to sing instead. Meanwhile, 'Down Here" was written with longtime producer Frank Rogers and has the sentiment, 'I'm sure heaven's nice but tonight it ain't too bad down here." Read more, including tour info, here.
"The organizers of Ultra Music Festival extend their deepest condolences to the family of Alex Omes and are saddened by the news of his passing," the festival noted in a release. "We will continue to remember and celebrate Alex for his love, passion and contributions to the Electronic Dance Music community." According to the Miami New Times, Omes launched the fest in 1999 with then-partner Russell Faibisch, but was pushed out in 2010 over disagreements regarding the decision to separate Ultra from the annual Winter Music Conference, which helped establish the city as a destination for dance music lovers around the world. "Everyone creates the thing they dread," counters the voice of James Spader. Now, Spader's voice may invoke many feelings in you, given some of the roles he's played over the decades (including Graham Dalton from Sex, Lies and Videotape, Mr. Grey from Secretary, and, more recently, Raymond Reddington on Blacklist). But in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spader is the voice of Ultron, the "big bad" from this installment of the super team's film franchise. In the comic book universe, Ultron was created by Hank Pym (who, in the Marvel cinematic universe, is about to debut in July's Ant-Man). But in the film, Ultron's creator is Tony Stark, according to Entertainment Weekly. In the trailer, we see Ultron, who looks like one of the many suits of armor that Stark detonated in Iron Man 3 (and the less we say about that particular film, the better) and his minions attacking the Avengers and creating all sorts of chaos. And then, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), still alive after the events of Captain America: Winter Soldier, adds, "No matter who wins or loses, trouble still comes around." After a brief tender scene between the Hulk and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) we hear Ultron again: "I'm gonna tear you apart from the inside." Apparently, that's the low-hanging fruit when you're taking on the Avengers: Loki caused some pretty intense in-fighting in the last film, and in this trailer, we see Thor lifting Stark up by his neck, and Stark in Hulkbuster armor taking on his teammate, the green goliath. We also get a brief glimpse of Scarlet Witch (played by Elizabeth Olson) tossing Iron Man (or at least one of his automated suits of armor). And someone is disrobing at about 30 seconds in, which will surely set off tons of fan speculation. Perhaps it's Jocasta, the bride of Ultron (who, in the comics, later left her creator/husband and joined the Avengers). Watch the trailer here.
Now they've released a video of the song to celebrate. The video pays homage to the film. Shots from its dramatic march scenes, church prayers, sit-ins and clashes with violent cops are interspersed with clips of Common and Legend performing on stage, clad in suits. Now that they've won the Golden Globe, Common and Legend will have wait for the release of the Academy Award nominations later this week to see if they have a shot at sweeping the Best Original Song category this season. Watch the video here.
Thornton admitted he was shocked to win. "I have, like, probably eight or nine Golden Globe nominations. I've never won." Billy Bob saying he didn't even hear them call his name or know what he said is his speech. As for his ex, Angelina Jolie, Thornton revealed they are still in touch. "From time to time, not often. I don't want to bug them." The actor is happy for all of Jolie's success. "Everything's so good in her life right now, and I'm so proud of her movie ['Unbroken'] I hope she does 10 more movies as a director." Watch video here.
In true Ellen style, she Photoshopped herself into the image in the place of the female model. The ad has inspired many parodies in addition to those from DeGeneres and Cyrus, including Australian comedians the Bondi Hipsters. The ad has also come under criticism, with many claiming the pop singer's physique was altered to look more muscular and appealing for the ad--not the first time, of course, that a magazine, company or anything of the like has been accused of such a thing. Check it out here.
The album was supposed to drop last year but has been mysteriously postponed with no end in sight. However, relief from the greatest drought since biblical Egypt may be near: Jeremih has just released the video for "Don't Tell Em (Remix)," which may be a sign of an impending album rollout cycle. Jeremih, French Montana, and Ty Dolla $ign pal around in a mansion that can only be described as wildly off the hook. Beautiful girls lounge everywhere, rose petals float in the tub, and chandeliers hang in between columns. Watch the video here.
That's not just talking false flags, predominantly the usual fake lineup posters (that Jay Z/Beyonce one you're seeing? Yeah) that circulate the web before the truth finally prevails. This year, Bonnaroo opted to have fans call them to slowly reveal the full lineup, with callers posting to social media to announce the artist shown to them with the hashtag #bonnaroo. About a half hour into the three-hour rollout, a band began to show up in the hashtag, and not just one of those one-offs someone put there as a joke. It had quite the backing from others who were tweeting the same thing; heck, a few even posted videos to Instagram or Vine of a male voice confirming it: No Routes Found would be playing Bonnaroo 2015. Well, except not really. Apparently, when a call cannot be completed, at times an error message will pop up under the name "no routes found." That's exactly what happened to many callers, undoubtedly due to high traffic on the line, but since many aren't up on their phone lingo, the new "band" got circulated, some via tongue-in-cheek tweets, some not so much. The images made their way to Jim Thiebaud, former professional skate boarder and the co-founder of punk label Adeline Records along with Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. Armstrong himself picked up on Thiebaud's post, reposting it to his Instagram account, and CBS San Francisco reports that his call to action prompted several of his followers to come out and join the search for Mochi. In less than a day following Armstrong's post, and three days since she first went missing, Mochi was found and returned to her home. Read more here.
"I'll tell you something, the first time I heard this song," he said, "I was screaming, 'til I cried. That's what I want: can you do that for me tonight? It won't be your fault, but if I don't get that, I'm gonna stop the show, and do it over!" After mentioning that he and Paul Shaffer wanted to hire them for a gig that the band couldn't make (due to a scheduling conflict; one of the members getting married at the time), Dave said, "Let's launch this rocket!" Turning his attention back to the audience, he said, "This is gonna be fantastic, ladies and gentlemen!" Letterman asked frontman Paul Janeway to discuss why he put a phone number in the lyrics of the song; Janeway mentioned that it was in tribute to Wilson Pickett's soul classic "634-5789," "But unfortunately, in Birmingham [Alabama, where the band is from] it leads to some sort of hotline." In all, Letterman's banter with the band lasted about two minutes before they played a note. Read more and watch it here.
She added, "He's a business guy. We're working on a business deal, and he's a great guy, a nice guy, but they always make up all these stories Okay, I get it. Everybody wants to me to be dating somebody by now. I get the hint." Gosselin made her debut on Season 7 of "The Celebrity Apprentice" last week, and this week a series of new "Kate Plus 8" specials, featuring her and her eight kids, are set to start airing on TLC. The mom insisted she has no time to date. "I don't ever leave my house. This is the like first time I left my house in a long time, unless you count Target and the grocery store." Kate said her priority is her family. "My kids are my priority and they keep me plenty busy." Watch video here.
Jerry, "Are you going to make it official or get married at some point." Sean saying, "I can't even say things out loud." Jerry asking, "Last time you told me mums the word about even being in a relationship, so you are saying mums the word about an engagement?" Sean played coy, "I just hate looking at people on television talking about their relationships." The Oscar winner is also pleased about the proceeds his Haitian relief organization has raised. "We're really moving into a good stage. The country still has great challenges economically, but the psychological recovery as well as the direct effect of the disaster recovery from the earthquake has really been extraordinary." Today marks the fifth anniversary of the massive 7.0 earthquake that devastated Haiti, killing over 300,000 people. Watch video here.
