Day in Pop Report for 01/08/2015
Sigel had one of his lungs removed, according to TMZ. Apparently the shots to his back and torso punctured one his lungs so harshly that doctors weren't able to mend it. Sigel sustained these injuries during a drive-by shooting in New Jersey one month ago when he was on his way home after taking his kids to school. Worse, the incident is believed to be a misfire as police think the target was the man standing next to Sigel. Read more here.
Yes, Iggy Azalea thinks that being a woman has to do with all the harsh words that are used about her, and she just might have a point. "Well, I never thought it was strange," Azalea said to Vanity Fair about being a white, female rapper from Down Under. When pressed about whether the critiques on her are misogynistic, she responded "Well, they don't say that stuff about Macklemore. So, yes, I think it has 100,000 percent to do with the fact that I have a vagina." Read more here.
A photo has surfaced online of Rozay proudly representing his team's logo in black ink on the side of his face, according to Bleacher Report. Hopefully he doesn't decide to relocate cities, or he'll face some tough questions. Or a hefty tattoo removal bill. That's not the only thing he got, though: during his alleged visit to the Unroyal tattoo shop in New Jersey, Ross got six other face tattoos. One notable insignia is Meek Mill's 'Dreamchasers" logo. Ross is paying homage to his friend and label mate, only recently freed from jail after several months. See the photo here.
Richardson, meanwhile, grabbed the world's attention as a variety of stories dealing sexually predatory behavior with his subjects began to emerge. He's always been a polarizing figure, but never before had he received such overt criticism. But the torrent of accusations hasn't slowed his output--take for instance his new spread featuring the Pinkprint star, Complex reports. Minaj wears an American flag t-shirt, a sparkly American flag hat and not much else. She looks aggressive, highly postured and in control. She smiles, she pouts, she bares her teeth. Like any example of peak Minaj, she's many things at once. The photos, posted on Terry's blog, come from a photo shoot he did recently for Rolling Stone as part of Minaj's Pinkprint rollout. The album hit No. 2 in America upon its release last month. See some of the photos here.
Bloomberg reports that the lawsuit alleges Beats used a "sham transaction to abscond with Monster's technology underlying the headphones, as well as its distribution chain." Lee owned 5 percent of Beats, but severed ties between Monster and Beats after what he alleges was a fraudulent "change of control" that gave HTC 51 percent ownership of Monster. Those stocks were later sold back to Iovine and Dre for a hefty profit, who in turn sold Beats to Apple for $3 billion. Lee alleges that Beats have concealed Monster's role in designing and developing the technology to make Beats headphones and that the company's partnership with HTC was a sham that allowed them to move the headphones away from Monster. Lee further alleged that the duo "pirated" his engineering designs for the headphones, which control half of the market. In a 2013 feature on Gizmodo, Lee revealed that he signed several unfavorable agreements, including one with a option that allowed Beats to take full control of the product, including Monster's engineering and design concepts. 'This is a tragic example of taking advantage of someone else's idea and concept, running off with it, and throwing him under the bus," Joe Cotchett, a lawyer for Lee, said in statement. The full lawsuit is here.
The pic finds Bieber, looking behind himself as female model Lara Stone falls all over him. Cyrus' remedy? Plaster her own face on the model's. Insta-win. So call that two shirtless pop stars in a Calvin Klein ad. Kind of. It's the latest in a series of shenanigans from the pop star's Instagram repertoire. Rihanna may be the queen of Instagram, but Cyrus has the weird side nailed down. See the photo here.
Her last album was 2013 Christmas record, Wrapped in Red, which was a mix of holiday standards and original tunes. Drizzy, who has a handful of comedic gigs on his resume, including stints hosting for Saturday Night Live and the ESPYs, stopped by The Comedy Store in Los Angeles Tuesday night and gave a few pointers to Red Grant. It started when Grant played Drake's recent track "6 God" and then went into his best impression of Drake dancing. Well, Aubrey didn't take too kindly to that and said, "What the hell is that? That was like some Omarion, Chris Brown together s-. That's not me, man." Read more here.
The streets he once called home have been renamed in honor of his visit with some of Brooks' most popular songs. During his visit to Tulsa, Brooks will perform Jan. 9-11 and Jan. 15-17. On the sweet power ballad, Goulding gets a little lovey-dovey singing about how good it feels to be touched by this certain someone, before asking her guy, "What are you waiting for?" "Every inch of your skin is a holy grail I've got to find/ Only you can set my heart on fire," she sings. Goulding promises there will be a video for her new track soon, like real soon since she tweeted the video will be out in "a few days." Check out the song here.
Avicii, Axwell^Ingrosso, Skrillex, Steve Aoki and David Guetta are among the slew of artists descending on Miami's Bayfront Park this spring. In particular, Avicii's appearance comes after he was forced to cancel an appearance at the fest in 2014 due to illness. Afrojack, Alesso, Hardwell, Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix and Tiesto are also among the artists performing at the festival in 2015. Check out a current list of performers here.
The photo, was one of several from the family's trip to Cambodia and Thailand posted on a fan account. Its origin is unknown. In reaction, World Animal Protection issued a statement denouncing the practice of paying for access to captive tigers. "The tigers used for these photos are often forcibly removed from their mothers to be fed artificially by tourists," World Animal Protection wrote in a statement on their website. "They are also crammed into tiny cages or chained to the floor for long periods. A far cry from their natural lives in the wild. Tourists like Beyonce are often unaware of the cruelty tigers suffer for these tourist attractions." "Many tourists unwittingly contribute to the suffering of wild animals like these," added World Animal Protection wildlife expert Dr Jan Schmidt-Burbach. "They're simply not aware that their 'once in a lifetime' photo means a lifetime of misery for that animal." The group address the mistreatment tigers face in order for tourists to get a once-in-a-lifetime shot in the video here.
On Wednesday (Jan. 7) the three-day New York City festival announced its 2015 lineup with acts like Drake, The Black Keys, DeadMau5 and Lana Del Rey heading the charge. Both Deadmau5 and Lana Del Rey are playing their first show in NYC since 2011 and 2012, respectively. The lineup for the fest--taking place on the weekend of June 5 to 7 at Randall's Island Park--will also feature performances from Björk--playing her first show since 2012--Ryan Adams, My Morning Jacket, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and Florence + The Machine. This will be Florence Welch and her band's first NYC show since 2012 and basically confirms rumors that she will have an album out sooner rather than later. Other acts on the bill include Charli XCX, Chromeo, The Decemberists, St. Vincent, Tame Impala, Ratatat (playing first NYC show since 2011), The War on Drugs, Flying Lotus, Conor Oberst, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Future Islands, J. Roddy Walston & The Business and Sharon Van Etten. Check out the full lineup here.
'Take your ho and f- her on the low just like a whisper/ Dom Perignon by the pitcher/ I used to eat at Crystal's. Nah, I'm just lying, I used to meet at Crystal's," he raps, his drug-dealer-cum-lothario persona on full display. The song comes off an upcoming project called TRU Jack City, a part of his TRU (The Real University) movement. The mixtape, forthcoming within the next month, will feature 2 Chainz and a panoply of local artists on the rise, including Travis Porter, Peewee Longway, Skooly, Young Dolph and Cap 1. Listen to the new track here.
A source close to the rapper told V-103 that construction and renovation have already begun on the property, which is located off Ivan Allen Boulevard. No word on when the restaurant will open, but he joins such rappers as Diddy, Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris who have also opened dining establishments in the Georgia capitol. Read more here.
"We just had the meeting with the label and the album is a go," McCreery told Rolling Stone Country. "And I'm going to make a country music record. That's what I had to try to convey to the label and they were all for it. The stuff I grew up with was that kind of music--I want to have some depth and portray a different side." McCreery's country roots run deep. During his performances on American Idol, he would sing songs by George Strait, Alan Jackson and Travis Tritt. Additionally, he said one of his favorite recorded songs is 'Carolina Moon," off See You Tonight. The ballad showcases the baritone singer's range and ability to sing a moving duet with a legend. "I have songs like that one where I have Alison Krauss doing background vocals, and those are my favorite songs I've ever done," he said. "So I'll play the game a little, but I'm going to try to stay true to what I love." Read more here.
In this case, it's the video for "Elastic Heart"--and this time, it's featuring none other than Shia LaBeouf. An almost fully nude Shia LaBeouf, for that matter. And he's locked in some kind of giant birdcage with Ziegler, the duo circling each other and pulling off yet another choreographed dance to Sia's music. But boy, if you thought "Chandelier" was weird, wait until you see "Elastic Heart." Ziegler ups the silly, sometimes creepy faces and crazy contortions, while LaBeouf pulls off similar moves to the best of his ability; he's no gymnast, but he does what he can. Eventually, the dance becomes more of a choreographed fight, Ziegler slamming LaBeouf into the cage while the actor attempts, in vain, to escape. Watch it here.
In a new Funny or Die video, Lil Jon grabs a printout of the current Coachella roster, and after sipping on some green tea, he riffs on various artists set for this desert festival set for this April. The expletive-heavy clip is rife with highlights, from Jon's take on St. Vincent ("they playing the whole movie?"), Cloud Nothings ("isn't that where you store your contacts on your iPhone?") and Panda Bear ("Coachella is no place for a motherf-- panda bear"). After confusing Ryan Adams with Bryan Adams, Lil Jon ends the video by lamenting the one act he really wants to see but isn't on the bill. Watch it here.
In statement released Wednesday, Aoki explained his thoughts. "To start the New Year I'm making some new changes and have decided I'll no longer be caking fans at most festivals," he wrote. "There might be an exception here or there but for the most part I'll be saving the CAKE for my headline shows, keeping it exclusive for the die hard fans." Those diehard fans can, he says, show up to one of his headlining shows as part of the Neon Future Experience in February and March. But hey, at least there's new music, too. To commemorate the news, Aoki released a new track, aptly titled "CAKEFACE," available immediately as a free download. Click the down arrow on the top left of the player below to download the song. Check out the full statement here.
MTV points out that band Timeflies have been inspired by the events and have written Khalifa a theme song, appropriately titled "Mia Khalifa." A sample of lyrics: 'Know she got dumps like a truck' From New York to the bay/All the way to Lebanon/Sometimes you gotta make a decision/Took her talents 'round the world/Now she ballin' like Lebron." The song is part of Timeflies Tuesday, in which the duo makes a new song every Tuesday. The process, as told to MTV, sounds predictably off the cuff. 'If I'm being real, we were in a cab to the studio, doing our daily surf around, and her name kept popping up, and we talked about it' read some articles and did some 'research,'" explained group member and vocalist Cal Shapiro. Take a listen to the song (warning: the song contains lyrics that may be considered offensive) here.
The latest on deck for Pitchfork's Over/Under column is Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ghostface Killah, but things get a little more serious when he is asked to discuss Bill Cosby. "He got a f- problem," Ghostface says regarding Cosby, while relating the irony of the wholesome, all-American dad actually being an alleged rapist. Perhaps Ghostface puts it all too lightly, but then again, the format on which he is asked to discuss Cosby doesn't really allow for serious discussion of complex issues. In the video Ghostface also talks about how skydiving showed him true peace, and how we are all microchipped like pound puppies. (Warning: the following video contains language that could be considered offensive, so proceed with caution). Watch it here.
Reality Show is Sullivan's first full-length in five years. It also finds Sullivan taking full control of her image and sound as she served as executive producer and the primary songwriter for each track. Production-wise, the album features contributions from Salaam Remi, Key Wane, Da Internz, DJ Dahi and more, which is a new move for the R&B singer who co-wrote her last release, Love Me Back, with Missy Elliott, Ne-Yo, No I.D. and others.
