Day in Pop Report for 01/05/2015
In an interview with Billboard, Ty Dolla $ign has claimed that he along with "Rihanna, 'Ye, and Paul [McCartney] got a song about to drop as well." According to Ty, it won't be long before we get to hear the track. 'It's gonna drop soon," he said. "I heard they shot the video recently. I don't know what the final title is, but I know it's crazy so just be looking out for [it]." Ty described a busy session in the studio with Kanye last summer. '[In] like 24 hours, [we recorded] seven songs or nine songs that day," he said. "I was like, 'I'm here with Kanye, I'm not gonna waste my time.' They really wanted me to stay for like a week, but I only had like two days, 'cause I was about to start the [Under the Influence of Music] tour." Read more here.
On one hand, the 17-year-old spawn of greatness is working with another golden-voiced pop star on a major musical project that could shake the pop world to its core. The other side of this is that Bieber isn't exactly the guy these days that you'd be stoked to have your 17-year-old hanging out with. He's been arrested more times than we can count, and may be facing significant South American jail time before this project can even complete. Read more here.
Yes, you read that correctly. But how could anyone think they could properly pay tribute to the un-tributable? That is just what One and Only Direction has tried to do. Myspace points to a hilarious series of tweets aimed at the lookalikes, all delivered with the choice hashtag #STOPyouarenot1D. The backlash for the One Direction tribute band even spread beyond the reaches of the English language. Most of the complaints were about how the tribute band looked, and not how they sounded, which begs the question: is One Direction is all about looks? Read the tweets and see the photos here.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (via Billboard), the 19-year-old rapper punched a 20-year-old security guard after the guard stopped and checked his credentials before he went on stage on Friday (Jan. 2). The guard was taken to the hospital with a broken nose and other facial injuries. Bada$$ was arrested after the show and spent the night in custody. He appeared in court the following day where he was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. Read more here.
That means Bryan, who toured in 2014 behind his chart-topping 2013 album Crash My Party, beat out the likes of One Direction, Garth Brooks, Beyonce and many more for the top spot, along with non-music acts like World Wresting Entertainment. Bryan's That's My Kind of Night tour concluded its U.S. run in October. It'll kick back into gear in February, with a date in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Feb. 10 and running through Feb. 21 in Orlando before hopping overseas. He'll return to the U.S. later this year for a slew of festival dates. One Direction, Brooks and Beyonce were Nos. 2-4 on the list, with the WWE in fifth. Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Disney on Ice and Jason Aldean rounded out the top 10. See the full top 20 of most searched artists on Ticketmaster in 2014 here.
Slotting into the likely column is also Florence + the Machine, who burst back onto the scene last October with an appearance at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit. Now, as Consequence of Sound points out, further movement toward a third album from the Florence Welch-led outfit appears to be on the horizon. The evidence? A fansite, awesomely titled Florence and The Machine Army, posted a photo of what appears to be a new Flo and the Mo album being mixed. Read more here.
If that seems ridiculously optimistic (to borrow one of his Radiohead song titles), it probably is. Billboard is reporting that though it is possible that Mr. Yorke struck it rich on his latest release, it probably didn't happen. Here's the logic: Sure, Yorke could have made a ton of money if the 4.4 million people that reportedly downloaded the album paid for it. But, BitTorrent can't tell us how many of the figure did pay for it, and it seems pretty unlikely that all, or even most, of the listeners actually coughed up cash for the album. Read more here.
'I got a studio in my house now so I'll just wake up, stretch, record whenever I want," Brown said. While he didn't give the project a title, he teased several details, including production from the legendary Alchemist. More unexpectedly, Brown chose this interview to bless the world with the news that he is currently working on a children's book. Although he's been working on it 'forever," he's excited to dedicate the book to his daughter. Read more here.
Harvey is collaborating on the public viewing of the studio sessions with Artangel, a group that commissions and produces ambitious art projects; they are setting her up "inside an architectural installation designed by Somerset House-based Something & Son," according to a press release. "The structure, a recording studio in the form of an enclosed box, has one-way glazing, displaying PJ Harvey, her band, producers and engineers as a mutating, multi-dimensional sound sculpture." In other words, fans will be able to watch the recording of the album, but Harvey and her team will not be able to see who is watching them during the process. Artangel co-director Michael Morris told England's Guardian that, while they sold tickets to the public (which have all sold out), they're careful not to promise anything, in regards to what the audience will see. "Excuse my absence," Ludacris says in the mix's introduction. "People been out here burning bridges. Seems like I gotta remind you motherf--s who I am. You know what they call me: Luda!" That first line also references his recent EP Burning Bridges, which hit the Internet last month for free as well. The LudaVerses follow several standalone freestyles that the rapper has uploaded to his Soundcloud page in past months, most of the time over major hits like Bobby Shmurda's "Hot Boy." Listen here.
It's an introduction to B.O.B's new label, featuring appearances from the entire squad, which comprises Lin-Z, Jake Lambo, London Jae and Scotty ATL, over beats from K.E. on the Track, DJ BurnOne, JaqueBeatz and then the ringleader, B.O.B himself. So, what exactly is the meaning of No Label? In an interview with Rap-Up TV, B.O.B explains that the project allows him to work without limitation: 'It quite simply means I can do what the f- I feel like doing." He went on to describe his forthcoming fourth studio album, which will be released this spring. 'This album will be more like The Adventures of Bobby Ray to me," he said, referencing his 2010 debut album. 'But with an edge that The Adventures of Bobby Ray never had." Check out the mixtape here.
The video includes scenes of Future and his Freebandz Gang crew relaxing, sipping syrup, playing chess and walking around a housing project on a frosty morning. These low-key scenes are interspersed with shots of Future on tour, performing at large venues and playing pool in clubs. There also a handful of blink-and-you'll-miss-them cameos from notables like Jeezy, Rae Sremmurd and Rich Homie Quan. The video sets up an image of Future as a rock star on tour and, in contrast, a loyal friend at home, who kicks back with his 'day one n--" when he's not tearing up shows on the road. Watch it here.
To his credit, O.T. instead went with a goofier route, pulling out a grab bag of surprises that include plays on "CoCo" and baking soda. Of course, this being a rap video, there's yachts, scantily clad women, mansions and shiny Lamborghinis that whip through the streets of South Beach. There's also a handful of star cameos. Among those you'll find Busta Rhymes, who co-directed the video, Timbaland and DJ Khaled. But best of all is Ice-T and his wife Coco, who post up in a club and give the hook an added meaning. "Baking soda," one of the best lines to shout in the song, also gets represented in an unexpected way that's pretty sweet. Watch the new video here.
It would make sense that Rihanna's next album would be released this year. Up until 2012, the pop singer had a consistent record of churning out an album each year, from her 2005 debut Music of the Sun to Unapologetic. Last year she spent most of her time making headlines in the fashion world, whether at the CFDA Awards with her crystals-covered naked dress, her topless Lui Magazine cover that got her suspended from Instagram, or the release of her men's Rogue fragrance. See the Instagram post here.
Presley's jets, dubbed the "Lisa Marie" and "Hound Dog II," are up for grabs at Julien's. If you've visited Graceland before, you've likely seen them as they've been on display for the past 30 years. The "Lisa Marie" comes with gold facilities in the bathroom and a 50-speaker soundsystem. The only potential roadblock? You can't fly in it. But, hey, if you have enough money to shell out on Elvis' jets, chances are you'll be able to afford another means of transportation. By comparison, Joplin's fringe suede vest, which is listed at a starting price of $3000 at Lelands, is a relative bargain. Read more here.
The two haven't been shy about proclaiming their love for one another, even performing their duet, "Best Mistake," off Grande's latest album, My Everything, on the holiday special, A Very GRAMMY Christmas. Upping the cute factor by walking away hand in hand. But, in this latest string of photos, the adorable twosome are showing off their kissy faces and their full-on ski gear. Grande even seems to be poking a little fun at all those diva rumors in 2014. You know, like the one where she likes to be carried everywhere. This time it's Sean who gets to carry the pop star through the snow. We'll assume he was willing and able to carry his girl. She did not however want to recreate the moment where she nearly got pummeled by a Victoria's Secret Angel's wing. We get that. Check out the photos here.
Underwood sits at No. 13 on the tally, sandwiched between Tom Hanks (No. 11) and Mother Theresa (No. 13). What makes the honor even bigger is the fact the National League of Junior Cotillions usually does a year-end list, but opted for this massive roster instead. So, who took the No. 1 spot? Jimmy Fallon is at the top, thanks to his "maintaining the dignity and respect of others through his comedic disposition as the host of 'The Tonight Show,'" as well as his continuing support of charitable organizations. Read more here.
And not only is the rapper himself kind of upset about it. His fans are, too. Billboard reports that fans of the rapper took to the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles over the weekend, picketing to protest YG's absence. "YG, why not?" was among the chants, while signs read "Honk for YG," "Bruh!" and other phrases on the sidewalk in front of the museum's entrance. A photo, posted to YG's own Twitter account, shows a group of about a dozen, some of them children. Though he was appreciative, the Compton rapper noted that he didn't orchestrate the protest. Another Twitter photo shows the aftermath: apparently, the protesters were removed from the premises. See the posts and photos here.
