Day in Pop Report for 02/18/2015
Gomez's new cover for V Magazine indeed shows the pop star without a top, but doesn't appear to go much further than that. The magazine isn't hitting newsstands until March, but Gomez has let a few more images fly via Twitter. Gomez still uses her arms to keep herself mostly covered, shedding some of her teeny-bopper image well still not delving head-first into Miley Cyrus territory. The singer shared the cover via Instagram. Check out the posts here.
Lady Gaga is engaged to her longtime boyfriend, actor Taylor Kinney, who she met in 2011 on the set of her "You and I" video. "He gave me his heart on Valentine's Day, and I said YES!" she wrote as the caption to a photo of her new rock. Yes, diamonds are a Gaga's best friend. Kinney, who has appeared in films like Zero Dark Thirty and currently stars on the TV show Chicago Fire, seems like a very straitlaced choice in comparison to Gaga, but in an interview with Glamour he said the two were "kindred spirits." Gaga agreed in a 2014 interview, "The way that it really works is, we trust each other. He's on his journey, and I'm on mine., and we're gypsies--and then when we're together we're really in love." As far her dream wedding, she had a few thoughts back then. "I am the center of attention in my job every single day, the thought of a wedding to me is exhausting. Why would I put myself through that? I want to go to David's Bridal. Here's my dream wedding: David's Bridal, grooms go on the men's side, girls go on the female side. We get completely hammered, we get the the worst dresses we can find and then we go to the courthouse." Read more and check out her heart-shaped diamond here.
The book is scheduled to be published on September 22 and reportedly will feature photographs of kids from around the world "celebrating what it means to be happy." Hopefully, it's a little easier for him to put this book together than the actual song. Pharrell told Radio.com that "Happy" was "the tenth song after nine songs didn't work for what the movie company described as a pivotal moment in the film." Read more here.
In the apocalyptic visual clip for her track off her GRAMMY-nominated My Everything, Grande keeps on the move, looking for her loved one as comets fly. As you can imagine, there's no shortage of dramatics. Ariana is in panic mode, weaving her way through ambulances and people huddling. Meanwhile the hot pink sky is lighted up by fiery flying chunks. It's the second sci-fi-esque video from Grande on this album cycle, following the intergalactic "Break Free." Watch the video here.
On the track, singer Dan Reynolds croons that he'll continue crooning until you come back to him over the bombastic drumming of Daniel Platzman and squawking sounds. The GRAMMY-winning group has made their brand on eccentric rock/pop crossover, more dependent on drums and production than guitars. This song's melody is carried by a piano. "You could say we're a rock band, but there are certainly bands that have more guitar than usI think the most easy way to make it consumable for the public is to say we're a rock band," Reynolds said of the group's sound in an interview with Radio.com. Listen to the new song here.
The slow jam "Remember Me" starts out with a memorable drum beat and female vocals before Brown jumps in with some raunchy lyrics. "Girl you know we got the time/ Got that p-- on my mind/ Later on what are we doing," Brown sings. Meanwhile, Tyga comes in for some smooth raps alongside a R&B beat about all the things he plans to do later that night with his lady. It's off the duo's upcoming Fan of a Fan album, which is scheduled for release next week. Listen to the track here.
Rihanna's breast-revealing, fashion-forward photo session is for AnOther Magazine, and is photographed by Inez and Vinoodh and styled by Katy England. The clothes, though, might be the real star of the artistic spread, as they feature many custom outfits by late fashion legend, Alexander McQueen. The shoes, the poses, the shape of the silhouettes all make for a pretty intriguing photo set, and are sure to rack up the magazine sales and page views. Read more here.
"How do you sleep at night?" Sean asks. On the track off his upcoming album, Dark Sky Paradise, out Feb. 24, Sean even talks about his last girl, Naya Rivera--who seems to have inspired a few songs off his new record--noting he thought she really was going to be the one. But, seeing Kim Kardashian and Kanye get married made him question things. Around the same time he dropped this track, he also released another on iTunes called "One Man Can Change the World" featuring John Legend and Kanye West, who thinks Sean is on "God's path." Kanye shows his Godly side on Sean's other new track "Blessings" featuring Drake. Listen to the song, which features Sean's dad at the end, here.
And finally, fans of the Fox TV will have the opportunity to listen to the tracks anytime. The TV show, which follows a rapper turned hip-hop mogul and his industry family, has announced plans for its debut soundtrack from season 1. The Original Soundtrack from Season 1 of Empire is set to be released March 10 on Columbia Records. It will have as much star guest power behind it, of course, as the TV show with features from Courtney Love, Juicy J, Jennifer Hudson, Estelle, Mary J. Blige and Rita Ora, along with tracks by cast members Jussie Smollett (Jamal Lyon) and Bryshere Gray a.k.a. Yazz (Hakeem Lyon), alongside Terrence Howard (Lucious Lyon). The standard version includes 11 songs, while the deluxe expands the running order to 18. See the track listings here.
The "I See You" singer was asked to be the celebrity grand marshal for the Endymion Parade on Feb. 14 and in addition to performing his own single, he covered Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," according to NOLA.com. Bryan and his wife Caroline were part of 3,100 riders who rode atop Endymion's 34 floats. The couple waved to onlookers and threw beads into the crowd. Later that night, after the parade, he and his band played a 90-minute set for 20,000 fans that spanned 17 songs at the Endymion Extravaganza at the Superdome. In addition to playing his radio hits, Bryan covered Alabama's "Mountain Music," Collective Soul's "Shine," Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Fishin' in the Dark" and Mel McDaniel's appropriate "Louisiana Saturday Night." The 17-song releases features guest spots from Future, Wiz Khalifa, K CAMP and more, along with production credits for Sonny Digital and others. Sound familiar? It's the sequel in name to Blue Dream & Lean, a mixtape from Juicy J that was released in 2011. Currently, the mixtape is available to both download and stream. Read more here.
Opening with a bouncy bass line, the synth-heavy track is one of their glossier ones to date and suggests that the group opted for more hi-fi production on their third studio full-length. It arrives with an adorable clip of children laying in the grass and can be downloaded immediately for anyone who pre-orders Kindred on iTunes. Meanwhile, "Lifted Up" premiered on Monday (Feb. 16). Check them out here.
In an interview with NME, Sia reveals that her album last year was meant to get her out of her publishing deal, and that she originally planned on being more of a writer for other artists than a pop star herself. Hence, This Is Acting as the potential title, because, as Sia explains, "I didn't go in thinking 'this is something I would say'. It's more like play-acting. It's fun." Read more here.
With Duets: Re-Working the Catalogue, the concept of the new Morrison album is exactly as it sounds: old songs, re-imagined as duets. And, with any high profile collaborative project like this, both the song choices and the duet partners are of note. In regards to the former, we aren't getting many of the best known Morrison songs, but, rather, cuts from his career that might be new seeming to many listeners. As for the latter, Mavis Staples, the late Bobby Womack, Joss Stone, Natalie Cole, and Michael Buble are among the singing partners that will appear on the effort. Check out a tracklist here.
Last month they announced BUSH, and video leaked of them performing a groovy new song called "Peaches N Cream" at a party in L.A. Now Snoop has shared a quick teaser video for the new album. The clip finds him rolling up a blunt comprised of pure light, and exhaling supernaturally hazy green smoke in front of a background of weed leaves while chords from "Peaches N Cream" play. "Peaches N Cream" has yet to be released in full, but we can expect to hear a complete version of the lush jam soon, with the rest of BUSH to follow later on this spring. Watch the video here.
Justin has expressed excitement about the roast, claiming that he's wanted it for years. Now he's starred in a promotional video for the show. The clip finds a shirtless Bieber preening in front of the camera, fixing his hair and preparing himself for the coming onslaught. "Watch Justin Bieber learn how poor, defenseless houses feel," reads the caption for the video. And find out he does, when a torrent of eggs come flying at his defenseless pecs, shattering and dripping all over the star's pristine abdomen. Check out the promo here.
The "Going Out Like That" singer announced the news and a track listing on her website. "We've been working on it a long time and we can't wait to hear what you think about it," she wrote. "As you all know, I love looking for songs to record. We listened to thousands of songs to find just the right ones for this album." Love Somebody has 12 tracks, and there will be a Target exclusive where fans can get two extra tracks with their album purchase. Check out the Love Somebody Tracklist here.
With a roster like that, there was no shortage of highlights. Among the musical ones: A cover of "Higher Ground" by Beyonce, Gary Clark Jr., and Ed Sheeran. Wonder's "Fingertips" and "Jammin" were other tracks that Beyonce put her stamp on, solo. Ariana Grande and Babyface gave a falsetto'd rendition of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered." Ne-Yo and Aisha Morris took on "Isn't She Lovely." Paul McCartney, who was honored for The Beatles during last year's GRAMMYs, also participated in the celebration. He delivered a video message to Wonder, reflecting on their relationship over the years and his early memories of the singer-songwriter. Read more and watch clips here.
