Day in Pop Report for 05/27/2015
Case in point: earlier this week at his Houston concert, Drake changed the lyrics of his song "Madonna" to be about his rumored past (and now maybe present?) flame, Rihanna. Could this be part of the aftermath of his infamous kiss with Madonna at Coachella? Could he be once again involved with the Barbadian singer, to whom his song "Days in the East" is supposedly an ode? What will Chris Brown have to say about it? Read more here.
Then there were the congratulations from their high profile friends like Drake, who took a moment during his second headlining Coachella set to send his congratulations: "You know when that girl you had a crush on and s- start being with someone else you gotta be like, 'yo, congratulations and on that s-,'" he said before bringing Minaj on stage to join him in a hug. But was all that for nothing?According to Meek Mill, the answer to that question is yes--at least for now. In the rapper's FADER cover story, Mill set the record straight. "'It's definitely real, but it ain't really time to get married yet," he said. "We're still learning each other, feeling each other out." Read more here.
Forbes noted that Beyonce topped all entertainers of their celeb list last year, with her earning power showcased both on her own tour and on her joint tour with husband Jay Z. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift is in at No. 64, and is the youngest person on the Forbes list at just 25 years old. Forbes cites her transition from country to pop on 1989 as a major part of her power, with its 3.5 million albums sold reminiscent of a time that many thought had passed. Read more here.
But as it happens, Nelson and Merle's Django and Jimmie is quite real--and now it's streaming in full on NPR's First Listen a week early. The album is out June 2 in full. Django & Jimmie marks the duo's six collaborative album, with production this time around by Buddy Cannon. It's a tribute to early country music legend Jimmie Rodgers and to guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt. Read more and grab the stream link here.
Bieber took the stage at the W Hotel in Hollywood on Sunday night (May 24) to croon a little to anyone who was looking to get lucky. Wearing his hat, Bieber had a little fun with the song and somehow made it seem less cheesy than you may have expected, even with those hand motions he was doing. The crowd is definitely having a ball, singing along before Bieber got down and did the worm and start doing a little ad-libbing. Watch the Biebz perform the track here.
In under 140 characters 'Ye managed to send the sweetest message to both his girl and his little girl, North. "Kim, I'm so happy to be married to the girl of my dreams' I love you and Nori so much!!!" he wrote. "I would find you in any lifetime." This message isn't that surprising for anyone who remembers how Kanye helped Kim celebrate Mother's Day with a thousand white roses. This message came after Kim shared a handful of photos from their special day on her Instagram, including a few of the two laughing on the dancefloor and kissing in a Cinderella-like carriage. Kim's mom even got in on the phone, posting a clip of the couple's first dance, which happened to be to his pal John Legend's song. And yes, that's Legend at the piano. See the posts here.
"Well, I grew up in a real town where the prom queen had a plastic crown," Owen sings on the track. "We got green grass and two trees, but it ain't like what's on TV." "Everybody can put themselves in this song in one way or another," Owen said in a press release. "And I've been dealing with a lot of real life circumstances lately: my father's sickness, fatherhood, getting married. These are the things I wanted to sing about, and I know my fans can relate." "Real Life" was written by Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. It is the first taste of new music from Owen's next album. In an interview with Tulsa World, Owen said he just started working on the new record, which will be out "hopefully by the end of the year." Read more and listen to the song here.
If the name worked for an unknown rapper from Detroit named DeJ Loaf, why wouldn't it work for two of the biggest stars in the world? The two stars trade off flirtatious verses over a bubbly, summer-ready beat. "So try me in the morning," sings Derulo. "When the sun comes rising up. "Try me," responds Lopez "In the afternoon in the afternoon, when you can't just get enough. Derulo clinches the conversation: "Try me in the evening, satisfaction guaranteed." The song sounds like a middle ground between the hard-hitting rap songs like "Wiggle" and his more pop-oriented work. For her part, Lopez sounds every bit as much the enticing star she did in the early 2000s. Meanwhile, production is handled by Matoma, known for his "Old Thing Back" redo that we think could be a hit this summer. Check out the song here.
"Emergency," out today (May 26), is the newest single from the Sweden dance duo, and roars in with a rapid tempo, bouncing beat from the start, both Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo and commanding listeners to "shake that a-/ spinning 'round and 'round and 'round and 'round like that" before relenting to a soulful vocal and blaring saxophone--a part that may not be as infectious as last year's sex appeal-oozing "Talk Dirty" from Jason Derulo, but is in the same ballpark. The new song is currently unattached to a major release of any sort, but don't be surprised if a new record is around the corner; This Is' Icona Pop hit stores in September 2013. With "Emergency," the duo will attempt to top "I Love It," an international hit that surged to No. 7 in the U.S. and is currently their only Hot 100-charting song. Check out the new song here.
The video begins with a shot of a bedroom and a rose lying atop a love letter, which we come to find out is from the man who left early to head into work. He presumably promises a romantic evening in his note as his lady holds it close to her heart before she starts getting dressed up. Meanwhile, the clock is nearing 5:30 at work and the letter writer seems to be doing his job wrong and is reprimanded by his boss as his coworker, Aldean, looks on. A babysitter is hired and the woman is all dolled up but it seems like the night may have slipped away from the couple as the clock ticks close to 6:30 p.m. and her date is still at work. Aldean can't let the night get away from the couple so he offers to finish the job so his colleague can meet his date. Just when she thinks he has bailed she hears a car honking outside. "Tonight Looks Good On You" was written by Rhett Akins, Ashley Gorley and Dallas Davidson and is the third single off Aldean's 2014 release Old Boots, New Dirt. Watch the video here.
The fifth annual festival is scheduled to take place at Pier 84 in Hudson River Park on July 11, 2015 and additional artists are still to be announced. Village Voice publisher Josh Fromson had the following to say about this year's event: "Having this years 4Knots Music Festival at Pier 84 in Hudson River Park ensures we can continue to deliver a great, live, innovative music festival to New York. "This location will allow us to create a massive music experience for our fans, while the low ticket price will assist us in supporting the Friends of Hudson River Park. We look forward to seeing you all this Summer on the West Side." Festival goers will have two ticket options for the event: an all ages general admission ticket for $25 and a 21+ VIP ticket for $50. Organizers also revealed that children under the age of 10 will be given free admission with an adult. Find ticket details here.
"Hunger," the third track from the new album, finds the Icelandic band beginning the track with a slow, meandering tempo that features guitar, strings and general reverb, both lead vocalists (Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar Þórhallsson) repeating, solemnly, "I'm drowning, I'm drowning." The song gains a bit more of a pulse shortly afterward, with a pounding bass drum cutting through added, strummed guitar--ending in a final bridge that layers the instrumentation while "I'm drowning" becomes even more of an impassioned plea. "Hunger" is the fourth song debuted from the album, following "Crystals," "I of the Storm" and "Empire." Check out the new song here.
The song, premiered Tuesday (May 26), finds the brothers Lawrence in their usual state of mind with a track that unfurls early on and spreads over five-plus minutes of deep house beats and computer-affected vocals. Last time Sam Smith was the beneficiary of a Disclosure banger, thanks to "Latch" and its worldwide dominance in 2013 and 2014. This go-'round, jazz vocalist Gregory Porter's baritone brings a soulful slant to the proceedings. Though "Holding On" has been teased as Disclosure's new album's first single, little else is known about the record so far. Check out the song here.
"I was fortunate enough to play the Late Night Jam early on in my career, and enjoyed the whole vibe and experience," Church said. "I love Marty and his guys and I can't wait to join an already fantastic lineup." Church will join Jimmy Webb, Charley Pride, Connie Smith, EmiSunshine, Brothers Osborne and guitarist Tommy Emmanuel. Stuart also touched on his eclectic late night jam, which he calls "a music lover's dream," with Rolling Stone Country. Read more here.
"The album's coming together really well, actually," he said then. "The boys, we've been writing with have come up with some great, great songs that are kind of like a bit Oasis-y almost, which is ace. I love that." Now it looks like that love is more than just skin-deep. On vacation in Mexico Payne spent an afternoon with a crowded bar leading a rousing singalong to "Wonderwall," with fan-shot video surfacing, naturally--doesn't it always these days? In the video, Payne sings the first part of the call-and-response, and then holds his microphone up to the crowd so they can fill in the last part--"I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do, about you now!" Watch it here.
In the show's latest preview clip, Latifah takes on LL Cool J's 1985 hit "Rock the Bells" while the show's host watches. To up the ante, Latifah dresses like LL did at the time in a vintage red Adidas track suit, a gold rope chain and her own take on his hat situation. Where LL rocked the Kangol bucket hat, Latifah updates the look with a black, flat brim number. Not to worry, though; co-host Chrissy Teigen pops on that white Kangol in honor of LL back in the day. Latfiah is joined on stage by a host of dancers also wearing the iconic red track suit. Watch the clip here.
Ocean isn't just working in any studio either; he's been setting up at the famed Abbey Road in London. According to Chassol, who talked about the experience with BBC's Gilles Peterson (via Billboard), Ocean recruited him to help out him out with Chassol's signature speech harmonization. "Ocean invited me to Abbey Road to record on his album," he said. "I asked him how he heard about me. He told me his friend Diplo was listening a lot to [my album] Indiamore, and they started to listen to it, and they were wondering how I was doing the speech harmonization, so he called me. He asked me to do some speech harmonization on a song with him. "After a while, it was cool and he was like, 'yeah, but we have to find another way because you already did it.'" Other guests that have orbited around Ocean's recording sessions include the famed producer Rick Rubin. Read more here.
'Although Ashley and Mary-Kate will not be a part of Fuller House, I know how much Full House has meant to them and they are still very much considered family," Boyett said. "It has been exciting to see how they have built their professional careers, and I support their choice to focus on their fashion brands and various business endeavors. I appreciate their support and good wishes towards Fuller House." John Stamos tweeted his response and it was a bit more emotional. "#heartbroken," Stamos said. "I understand they're in a different place and I wish them the best. I promise you will not be dissapointed with our reunion and spin off!!" Read more here.
Madeon, Borgore, Cashmere Cat, Robin Schulz, Matoma and more will fill out the bill and there are more artists are set to be added too, per a tweet from the festival. Three-day general admission passes are currently running for $240, with VIP available for $440, on their website. The fest also announced that through June 5, interested parties can pay for their tickets via an installment plan, with $49 expected for the first payment. Check out the full lineup (so far) here.
We caught up with Grammer over the phone at the end of his U.S. tour to talk about the inspiration behind an unlikely love song extolling the virtues of monogamy. Grammer revealed the real-life inspiration behind the song, how they found that couple who'd been married for over 70 years for the video and how monogamy changed him in unexpected ways. Radio.com: Where did the nugget of the idea for "Honey, I'm Good" come from? Andy Grammer: I think anyone in a relationship has to deal with temptation, if they're being honest with themselves. People don't talk about it very much but it's very honest. Guys and girls both have temptation. With me being out on the road, after-shows, singing pictures, hanging out, doing meet-and-greets and stuff, that's definitely real. There are pretty girls all over the place. But there are still a lot of people standing strong, doing their thing in loving relationships actually staying true. I wanted to write an honest love song from that point of view. There wasn't one specific girl I'm thinking of when I sing that song, it's an overall idea. Read more here.
Cavalli unveiled a look at the ad campaign for the collection, for which concept is the "story of a world encapsulated in one room. A surreal kingdom where the walls look like a magical sky and surfaces enchant with desert volumes and earthy hues." Cavalli say they chose Ciara as the face of their collection because she "embodies beauty with a hint of wildness." Cavalli previously tapped Nicki Minaj as the face of their Spring 2015 collection. See the announcement tweets here.
'Feelin' It' was written during a period of timeless 20-something existential confusion-ultimately it is written about the nature of life playing tricks on your ego. I had somewhat recently graduated from Berklee College of Music and I was realizing that there were no longer teachers older and wiser than me, some of whom were only valuing my work because they were being paid to. At the same time, there were a lot of voices around me, whether they were from the media, personal and business relationships, or even just perceived societal pressures about who I should be now that I was being considered an adult in new ways. The blanket of education had been removed and I was feeling some of the cold realities of the "adult world". I would wake up feeling positive and assured of my purpose and strengths and by the end of the day I would come home, close the door and either want to smash a chair or cry. Meeting goals was not just a test or a grade away anymore and my work wasn't ending in the same quantifiable results. We are really excited to release the music video for this song in the very near future, which was filmed with 360 GoPros in a variety of locations like dancing through a playground filled with children while wearing nothing but neon glitter spandex, zip lining, or raving out of a '82 convertible Corvette while driving down the highway just to name a few. Our hope is that 'Feelin' It' will inspire listeners to not give a f*** and enjoy the dance of life. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
