Day in Pop Report for 05/19/2015
That act of celebration turned into something else at a gig in San Diego a few years ago, when a fan, Brittany Hickman, found herself underneath the raft before Aoki jumped. When he did, she was injured with a broken neck and ankle. To no one's surprise, Aoki has been named in a lawsuit by Hickman, as well as the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego, where the concert was held. In a new interview with The Modesto Bee, the country staple sounded off on the influx of outside artists reinventing themselves in the country world, like Poison's Bret Michaels and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, who both recently released country singles. 'I can't stand to see outdated rock-and-rollers coming in to play country music," Walker said. "That really pissed me off. We have great singers, great country musicians. There's no reason we have to dilute it by letting people in the format that don't have any business being in the format." As you can imagine, Walker is also not a fan of the blurring of hip-hop and country music--where rapper Nelly currently stands--but he's still able to appreciate that the genre has opened up for new fans. Now, the mixtape is available to stream on Spotify as well. The project includes 12 total songs, six of which were originally released last month on his Intermission 1 EP. The other six, comprising Intermission 2, are all new. Trey Songz nabs his fellow Virginian Pusha T for a feature on the song "How Could You Forget": it's a silky smooth track with a sticky hook--"how could you, how could you, how could you forget," Songz croons. He stays in this mode for the rest of the mixtape--the luxurious beats never swerve from the lane he's carved out over his long career. You can buy the entire Intermission I & II project on iTunes, and stream the mixtape here.
The live recording, which is apparently untitled, is an ode for Pablow, who died under Cyrus' care recently. "Some of you may remember a few months ago my dear blow fish Pablow past [sic] away," she posted on her Facebook page. "I wrote this song for himHe made me so happy and I miss him everyday. But now he is with Floyd and Melanie's sweet Sadie." A quiet ballad, the song finds Cyrus sitting at an electric piano while singing the very literal lyrics detailing the night Pablow died, including a sushi dinner with friends that didn't sit well with the singer. Check it out here.
While performing some of his lesser played hits in support of TIDAL at Terminal 5, Jay Z addressed the shooting death of the 31-year-old Queens, NY rapper Lionel 'Chinx" Pickens, a member of French Montana's Coke Boys, who, according to CBS New York, was shot eight or more times earlier the same day while sitting in the passenger's seat of his car. The driver of the car was also shot and is currently in critical condition. "[A] young man got killed in Queens named Chinx," he told the crowd, before saying, "We are seriously under attack like never before. Rest in peace to Chinx. And we still killing each other. We need to understand that we are kings and queens." Jay was also reported as saying, "People left the hood, they don't wanna go back. No, people go back to the hood and get killed." Read more here.
And that was just a taste, it turns out: Jonas has announced a new North American tour, kicking off late summer and running through the end of September. The headlining tour dates will precede an October tour as support on Kelly Clarkson's Invincible tour. Jonas' first show will be Sept. 6 in Hershey, Pa., with the final date scheduled Sept. 29 in Silver Spring, Md. Bebe Rexha will open on all dates. See the tour dates here.
The singer debuted the clip at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday, where she picked up 8 trophies, including Top Artist and Top Female Artist, while "1989" won the Top Billboard 200 Album prize. "Bad Blood" featuring Kendrick Lamar is the fourth single issued from the project, following "Shake It Off", "Blank Space" and "Style." Swift is currently playing concerts on The 1989 World Tour; a North American run ends in Philadelphia on June 13 and will be followed a short UK tour. Watch the video here.
Clarkson delivered the debut live performance of the song on the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday. The singer will launch her Piece By Piece tour in Hershey, PA on July 11 with guests Pentatonix and Eric Hutchinson. Produced by Jesse Shatkin, "Invincible" was written by Sia, Steve Mostyn, Warren Felder and Shatkinand features uncredited vocals by Sia. Check out the lyric video here.
"#1 To Infinity" features all 18 of the singer's No. 1 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart - more than any solo artist in history. The No. 1 chart hits range from 1990's "Vision Of Love" and "Love Takes Time" through to 2008's "Touch My Body." Earlier this month, Carey launched her Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Stream the new "Infinity" video teaser preview clip here.
The low-key track, which also honors Mills protege the 18-year-old rapper Lil Snupe, who was shot and killed in 2013, hinges on the lines: "I miss my dawgs" saying that he "wished he was dead" when they killed his young friends. "Fly so high, so long, goodbye," closes out the sad track. The 31-year-old Queens, NY rapper Lionel 'Chinx" Pickens, a member of French Montana's Coke Boys, who, according to CBS New York, was shot eight or more times earlier the same day while sitting in the passenger's seat of his car. Meek Mill commented on the shooting death of his friend, beginning his message with, "This is exactly why I don't play in the streetsMy real day 1s get out that hood no matter what it cost or the circumstance! It's nothing that add up to losing ya life at a young age!!! N--s killing n--s that's Tryna win! I got love for the people in the hood but I don't f-k wit the hood nomore!" Listen to "Miss My Dawgs" here.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight a few months back, Owen mentioned how the collaboration first came together. 'Adam [Young, of Owl City] wrote me an email and said that he enjoyed what I did, and asked if I'd be interested in being a part of something," he explained to ET. "It just kinda worked out." But now the song is officially happening on record, and Owen has already had to field some questions about it. Owen recently responded to criticism on Twitter when the news broke about his collaboration with Owl City after a fan suggested he's not staying "true to country." Read more here.
Now she's taking that task to her music. Her latest single, a surprise 7-inch called "Miss Narcissist," feels like another response to the persona she's built over the years. On the track, Love seemingly refers to herself in third person delivering lines like, "Miss Narcissist, come on / Magnificent and obvious / Bless us with your presence / And your paranoia," and the chorus mockingly flippant chorus "Man, man, man, no apologies." It's exactly the kind of self-deprecating jaunt you'd expect from someone who's serving as Lana Del Rey's tour opener. Check out the song here.
"Whether the people want to accept it or not, we might be the best band in the last long time," Flowers claims in an interview with The Independent. 'I'd go up any night against just about any band that's come out in the last 15 years." Flowers added that he feels robbed of credit for his participation in a band that received seven GRAMMY nominations: 'Not that it's a competition, but I do feel sometimes people don't have a grasp on what we've accomplished and what we've acquired." Over a high-key assortment of claps, shouts and pounding drums, American Authors unleash an anthem for those nights when you need an extra bit of encouragement. "I'm thinking life's too short, it's passing by. So if I"m gonna go at all, go big or go home," frontman Zac Barnett croons. It's rousing stuff. This song is built for stadiums, arenas and enthusiastic high school sports coaches. "I'm passed out on the hotel bar, but it's OK 'cause I'm feeling fine," meanwhile, pretty much sums up the entire song's sentiment. Check out the song here.
But Billboard attempted to rectify that after the ceremony when they asked Payne what he would have said. "I had my bit to say and, you know when you're going to do a speech and you compose yourself and get yourself in the zone?" Payne recalled. "I must have looked so ready on the mic, had the award in hand, ready to say my bit and then literally the music started. There was no countdown." Ironically, Payne didn't have anything major planned for his speech. He was just planning on figuring it out as he went along. "I was gonna say thank you toI can't really remember," he said. "But it was something along the lines of, 'Thank you everyone. We've had an amazing tour so far sort of thing and we're back on tour July 9 in San Diego so we'll see you there.' New songs. New vibe." In the interview, Letterman said that when he walks out of the Ed Sullivan Theater Wednesday night, it will be for the last time. "I don't think I'll ever be back in this building again," he said. "Honestly. I think it would just be too difficult for me, emotionally. There have been a lot great things to celebrate, there have been a lot of arguments [here], and nearly fistfights and nearly every emotion that people can share over 20 years. I just don't want to come back and see other people living our lives." He mentioned that there will be a party after the last broadcast, but it's not one he's looking forward to attending. "I'm not looking forward to it at all," he said. "I don't want to go to a party, I recognize that it's good, cathartic perhaps, for all of us to be together, because it's not been easy on anybody who has been here any length of time, for this to end. So I recognize the symbolic importance of it. But holy crap. [mimicking a waiter/waitress] 'Care for a shrimp puff?' I don't want a shrimp puff." Read more here.
