Day in Pop Report for 03/20/2015
Urban thinks the verdict was ironic since he believes that the sound of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" was inspired by Johnny Taylor's "Disco Lady", according to ABC Radio. The country star had this to say, "I'm more interested in the fact why Art Stewart, who produced ['Got to Give It Up'], hasn't been brought into the conversation as far as the way in which he put players together to create the sound, which was taken from another song called 'Disco Lady.' "Marvin literally heard that song, and Motown were asking him to make something a little more disco-sounding. He got the guy who produced that song by that artist to come and emulate a similar atmosphere in the studio." ABC Radio also spoke with Snoop Dogg about the verdict when they caught up with him at the Justin Bieber Roast. He said, "I don't really got nothing to say about that, because I love both artists and I feel like, you know, if it was that, it was paying homage and showing respect and appreciation and sometimes... its misunderstood, its taken the wrong way," said the rapper, who's currently working on a new album with "Blurred Lines" producer Pharrell. Snoop continues, "But me personally, I don't have that issue, because I love what I do and everybody that's old school, I always give them theirs and if we work together, then we work together. But if it is that, it is what it is."
Radio.com reports: Schwartz is seeking damages for emotional distress because Bieber's bodyguard allegedly hurled anti-Semitic insults along with Bieber's eggs, according to Rolling Stone. The allegations stem from two separate incidents where Schwartz claims that Bieber's bodyguard called him "little jew boy." Once was Memorial Day weekend in 2013 and the second was in January 2014, both before the infamous egging. Other allegations include "shouting obscenities at his wife and daughter, throwing loud parties, drag racing and spitting on Schwartz." Read more here.
The One Direction member has reportedly withdrawn from his group's current tour, the one that recently pushed him into the spotlight when news broke that the Philippines were considering forcing the band to take a drug test upon entering the country to play a show. Since Malik and Louis Tomlinson were seen smoking a joint, the burden seemingly would have fallen on them.According to a press statement, "Zayn has been signed off with stress and is flying back to the UK to recuperate. The band wish him well and will continue with their performances in Manila and Jakarta." Read more here.
It turns out that the injured man, Cle 'Bone" Sloan, admitted to authorities to having attacked Knight on the night of the incident, bolstering Knight's claims that the actions were acts of self-defense. Sloan's statement, that he "f-- Knight up," and "punching [Knight] through the driver's-side window and disallowing him to exit the truck," support much of what Knight's defense has claimed, that Knight was simply fleeing the incident with his car when he struck the two men, according to XXL. Also of interest in the case is the revelation that the deceased man, Terry Carter, called Knight 19 minutes before police were called. Read more here.
What is very difference about the accusations leveled at Mac Miller is they are not for a commercially released song. The track, "Therapy," was featured on the Miller 2014 mixtape Faces, meaning that Miller did not profit directly off the song. The accuser in the case is Aquarian Dream, whose song "Yesterday (Was So Nice Today)" is sampled in the song. (via Hot New Hip Hop) The '70s funk band is seeking a pretty steep $150,000 in the case. Death Grips have chosen the latter, making a Faceboook post acknowledging their final album, and specifically the second disc of the powers that b, entitled Jenny Death, had leaked. Death Grips have chosen to throw the whole release up on YouTube, per this Facebook post. Death Grips final album will still be sold on March 31, and officially the band will cease to exist after this release. Of course, this has been the weirdest band breakup ever and would surprise no one if the group didn't actually split as promised. Listen to Jenny Death in its entirety here.
Now some more details have come to light. One of the witnesses--Matt Sonzala, an independent promoter in Austin--spoke with Buzzfeed about the incident. His account revealed a couple things, one of which is that the police didn't arrest the attacker. 'After he was thrown out, I walked out and asked police working the line to get in if they planned on arresting the man who just attempted to assault the band onstage," he said. 'They come with me and we find him right around the corner from the venue--he's sitting on a stoop, skull open, bleeding down his face. Police talk to him, come back and say to me they can't arrest him based on my testimony alone." Sonzala also revealed that, through the police, he found out that the man claimed Run the Jewels owed him money and stole his lyrics. Read more here.
The letter, written by Gaye's three children Nona Gaye, Frankie Gaye and Marvin Gaye III, explains why they decided to take legal action against the track. "Great artists like our dad intentionally build their music to last, but we as the caretakers of such treasures, have an obligation to be vigilant about preserving the integrity of the music so that future generations understand its origins and feel its effect as the artist intended, and to assure that it retains its value," the letter says. The children go on to say that it was Robin Thicke and Pharrell who issued the initial lawsuit against them "forcing us into court" and that they would have gladly settled out of court if the two artists would have admitted the two songs sounded similar and were willing to come to a deal over the song. They also say that reports that they're suing Pharrell over "Happy" are "100% false." "We have absolutely no claim whatsoever concerning 'Happy,'" they wrote. They also clarify that the jury's decision "was based entirely on the similarity of the basic musical compositions, not on 'style,' or 'feel,' or 'era,' or 'genre'" since they were not allowed listen to the sound recording of Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" in the courtroom. And that may not just pertain to music, either. "The verdict hampers any creator out there who who is making something that might be inspired by something else," he said. "This applies to fashion, music, design' anything. "If we lose our freedom to be inspired, we're going to look up one day and the entertainment industry as we know it will be frozen in litigation. Everything that's around you in a room was inspired by something or someone," he added. "If you kill that, there's no creativity." Read more here.
The song erupts with high-key lunacy right from the jump: "My wrist like The Rock, people's elbow," is quite frankly one of the funniest rap chorus puns in months. It's a reference to flushing drugs down the toilet when the feds show up at your door. Throughout the song, the Migos operate at a level of joyful absurdity. Few things in life excite in the same way as Offset shouting "Jabroni!" as an adlib, and Quavo's verse nimbly rhymes 'there go Elmo," 'Donatello" and 'Bill Cosby Jell-O." As if that wasn't enough, he takes us on a sightseeing trip to the Middle East: 'Pretty b--es show me cameltoes / I'm balling Dubai, riding camels." Listen here.
'My last week being on that show, I wrote a song that really speaks about my whole journey up to that point," Boyd told the audience. 'If it's alright, this is brand new for me, and I'm going to share it with you guys tonight." With a song about not giving up, it was easy to tell that Boyd poured his heart into the song. "I'm a believer/ There's a song in me that's begging to be heard/ Yes, I'm a dreamer ' So I skipped a few meals and I slept in my car," he sings. Read more and check out the new song here.
This being Third Man, it won't just be any vinyl reissue. The label has previously put out liquid-filled vinyl, a single with rose pedals inside a record, and records pressed with gold and platinum (The Great Gatsby soundtrack, which was executive produced by Jay Z). Third Man also won a GRAMMY earlier this year for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for their box set The Rise & Fall Of Paramount Records, Volume One (1917-27). So for the Magna Carta release, they're going all out. The album won't be cut on an LP; rather it will be a box set of eight 7-inch 45-rpm records, kept in a clothbound binder. Scratch-off boxes within the pages of the binder will reveal photos and lyrics (leading to a conundrum to Third Man addicts who collect everything: do you scratch them off, or does that decrease the value of the box set?). Imagine it: open on Snoop, seen through a psychedelic filter, and Beats speakers, seen through the filter of the money they spent to finance this music video. From there, unload the special effects files, boys, because we're going to be using all of them. Lowlights: those weird virtual reality sunglasses that are not time period appropriate, the peach-shaped planet that explodes into a burst of cream and makes things a little too literal, plus finding out Pharrell is still wearing those Chanel sunglasses. Still. Check it out here.
The Mohawk-sporting and gold chain-wearing actor is set to make a return to television in a new hard-hitting role as a sledgehammer-toting home improver on I Pity the Tool, a cheeky pun on his famous Clubber Lang catchphrase, "I pity the fool." 'Before I worked in show business, I worked in the demolition business. And even after I made it in Hollywood, I kept on building things," Mr. T explained in a statement to The Wrap. 'We're hooking up homeowners who need help with their renovations. I'm tired of all this jibber jabber -- we're out here getting things done, working hard, demolishing the old and rebuilding the new." Read more here.
But, have you been wondering these two hooked up? It's actually a funny story that all started at a Toys "R" Us. In an interview with the Associated Press (via Billboard), Azalea explains that "I saw her at Toys "R" Us randomly; she lives right down the street from me. Since I've met her now we keep bumping into each other in the street. "I love Britney," Azalea said. "She's super sweet and I just want to hang out with her all the time." Azalea also admits that after some of the criticism she received after releasing her debut, she was getting discouraged about the music business. She even quit Twitter with the final statement, "the Internet is the ugliest reflection of man kind there is." Luckily, Brit Brit was around to show her the way. "I don't know if I needed re-inspiring," Azalea explained of getting in the studio with Britney, "but it's just made me extra excited to want to put out new music." Read more here.
The request stems from a video that was released last year which shows Malik and Tomlinson allegedly smoking pot in Peru. That clip led the ant-drug organization, Laban ng Pamilyang Pilipino,to rally behind the cause, "No drug test, no entry!" And now it seems the government heard their pleas--despite others remarking that the group done good work in the country before, specifically raising money after the Haiyan/Yolanda typhoon hit. The Bureau states that the bond is 'intended to protect the public interest should the band members commit any violation during their stay in the Philippines," March 21 through 22. Read more here.
