Day in Pop Report for 02/25/2015
The tour was scheduled to hit the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec on Tuesday night (February 24) and then the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario tonight (February 25). Both shows have been canceled "due to immigration issues" the concert promoter Live Nation told CBS News. Several media outlets also reported that Brown confirmed the cancelation via Twitter but later deleted the tweets. Brown reportedly tweeted, "The good people of the Canadian government wouldn't allow me entry. I'll be back this summer and will hopefully see all my Canadian fans!" The next scheduled date on the tour is Friday (February 27th) in Rosemont, Ill at the Allstate Arena and the trek's final date is set for March 16th in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center, according to Brown's Facebook page. See the dates here.
Financial publication Forbes reports that "21" has so far spent 208 weeks on the Billboard chart since its release in 2011 and the album has only been outside the top 100 for 24 of those weeks. In an era were very few artists can managed to reach platinum status (1 million copies sold), Adele's "21" has sold over 11 million copies in the U.S., earning her a diamond award for the effort (which marks sales of 10 million copies).
Clarkson recently was interviewed by BBC Radio 1 and said, "I honestly would collaborate with a lot of people, but everyone usually says no. I'm not kidding you. "I have legitimately asked several people that I'm not going to call out...Sometimes I feel like I have the plague, or leprosy, they're like, 'If you get too close...' I don't know." Now she says that she was only joking and called out the media for "twisting" her comments. "Ok, I was making a joke about people not singing with me!" she tweeted. "The press is really twisting this comment just FYI! No big deal. New story please." The real story for Clarkson is that she is promoting the release of her new album by revealing a new song from the effort each day. On Tuesday she posted a stream of the title track and began selling it on iTunes. She said that the new track is the "most personal song on the album." Check out the stream here.
The popstar also voices a character in the movie, which is based on Adam Rex's children's book "The True Meaning of Smekday," which tells the story of aliens coming to earth. The movie is set to hit theaters on March 27th. Rihanna not only contributed the first single to the soundtrack, she also reportedly curated the effort, according to TIME. They report that it will feature tracks from Charli XCX, Jennifer Lopez and Kiesza. Read their report and stream the new song here.
Minaj posted the following message on Instagram, "#ThePinkprintTOUR comes to America this summer with @meekmill and MORE! Can't wait to unveil the rest of the line up! Loveeeee." Next month, she will kick off the European leg of the tour which will feature Trey Songz. That tour will be kicking off on March 16th in Stockholm, Sweden and concluding on April 12th in Glasgow, Scotland.
Sean tells GQ magazine, "It means a lot. First of all it is darker than any album I've ever done. And I went through some dark times just like we all do, with relationships, personal relationships, romantic relationships, creatively. He adds, "I feel like I had to dig myself out of a hole creatively and bounce back hard. But throughout all of it, despite all the dark and crazy times I've been through, I still feel this is paradise." Read the GQ feature here.
Flowers made the announcement to fans via his official website. He posted the following message, "On May 18th, 2015, we will finally achieve The Desired Effect." He went on to provide these details, "[Producer] Ariel [Rechtshaid] and I have been collaborating in the studio, working twogether [sic] in the spirit of conversation, contention, and at long last, sweet contrition. No one has yet seen or heard the change. But soon, we all will." Ariel Rechtshaid's writing and production credits include work with Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Usher, Calvin Harris, Charli XcX, Sky Ferreira, Vampire Weekend, Haim, Plain White T's, Snoop Lion and more, according to All Music "The Desired Effect" follows Flowers' 2010 debut solo album, "Flamingo."
Redfoo, born Stefan Gordy and the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy, had previously appeared on the popular ABC talent contest show as a guest judge. He will be paired with pro partner Emma Slater when the 20th season of the reality competition show premieres on Monday, March 16th. The other contestants for the season including Suzanne Somers, Patti LaBelle, Shark Tank's Robert Herjavec, Hunger Games star Willow Shields, actress Rumer Willis, R5's Riker Lynch, football star Michael Sam and Olympian Nastia Liukin. The duo premiered the new song with the release of a lyric video for the track which shows Matt and Kim decked out in hoodies while skateboarding. You can watch the clip here. The new album, their fifth release, is set to be released on April 7th and they had previously previewed two other songs from the effort, "Get It" and "Hey Now".
We now believe Aguilera doing this impression is the best part of waking up. The Voice judge then took on Britney Spears, who Fallon jokes, "You know Britney Spears, right?" Oh, does she know Britney Spears, specifically Britney covering the classic children's rhyme "This Little Piggy" to the tune of "Baby One More Time." After a little chuckle, Aguilera started into the song. The words "wee-wee all the way home" never sounded so good. Aguilera also became Shakira, Shakira, singing the Golden Girls Theme. Thank you for being able to do this impression Christina. Watch it here.
But we have to admit, we wish we thought of this one: Warren and Kenny G. Yes, Warren G, stepbrother of Dr. Dre, former member of 213 and proud representative of the G-Funk movement of the '90s. And yes, Kenny G, adult contemporary and smooth jazz saxophone icon. When they did Kenny G's 1987 mega hit "Songbird" with Warren G free-styling fierce rhymes on top of Kenny's easy-listening classic, they killed it. No, just kidding. They did the Warren G/Nate Dogg 1994 gem "Regulate," and it was pretty amazing regardless. Fittingly, Nate Dogg's recorded vocals were used--he passed away in 2011 due to complications from multiple strokes--and Kenny G complemented Warren G and his band with his really, really, smooth sax lines. Check out the mashup here.
Zac Brown Band, a country group whose appeal spreads wider than most in the genre (they've even become mainstream festival headliners and collaborated with Foo Fighters on several occasions), will be making their SNL debut on March 7. The host for that evening will be Chris Hemsworth, aka the big-screen Thor. ZBB is just another notch on another impressive season of musical bookings on Saturday Night Live, which has already seen Ariana Grande, Kendrick Lamar, Prince, One Direction, and D'Angelo stop by for performances. This weekend will see the Alabama Shakes take the stage. Read more here.
Surrounding the band are many cameos including comedian Andy Dick, Lorenzo "The Main Event" Antonucci, Danny Worsnop of We Are Harlot and Telle Smith of The Word Alive. In the opening sequence, Radke and Antonucci meet up in a dressing room, a surprise to many fans due to a beef the wrestler had with Radke several years ago. After exchanging a few words, the pair turn to the camera and offer a smile and thumbs up, signaling that all is well in Rocksville. Watch the video here.
Jonas puts a blue-eyed soul spin on West's ode to his family, performing a stripped-down version by himself with just a keyboard. Jonas tweeted to West to announce the song's released, saying, "I love this song so much I had to sing it myself." Given Jonas' more recent career shift in the soulful R&B slant, a cover of "Only One" makes sense. Maybe a rendition of "FourFiveSeconds" is not too far down the road? Stay tuned to find out. Check out the Kanye cover here.
