Day in Pop Report for 02/13/2015
The news comes via a tweet from the rapper showing off the hand-scribbled artwork and a link to the project. He tweeted, " If You're Reading This features contributions from Lil Wayne ("Used To"), Travi$ Scott ("Company") and two songs with PARTYNEXTDOOR." Late last month, P Reign all but confirmed the project, calling it a mixtape, though it was unknown at the time when it would drop on the Internet. The previous month, Toronto Raptors forward DeMar DeRozan also confirmed the news. Stream the new mixtape here.
Potential replacement names are already floating around including Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick, Joel McHale, and Chris Rock, but Stewart tells "Extra" he is not sure who should take over, "I don't know man, I'm looking forward to seeing who they end up picking." When asked if he will have a say in the decision he quipped, "I don't think they let you do that, do they let you do that when you leave a job, you just get to pick whoever it is." Jon joked, "I'm assuming someone around my size so they can save on the suits, I came in for Kilborn, he was six five so they just had to bunch them up in the back for me." Jon saying he may have some special guests as the show comes to an end, but he just wants to focus on doing a good job, "I just hope we're able to keep doing it well to the end, don't want to get senioritis too bad, just end up playing ultimate Frisbee to bad, so hopefully I'll stay focused." Extra also asked Stewart about speculation he could trade jobs with embattled NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, Stewart quickly shutting that headline down: "Sounds like a terrible premise for a movie and nothing to do with what this would be." But that's not all. "I See You" is Bryan's sixth No. 1 from his 2013 album Crash My Party. As a result, Bryan is the only modern country artist to release an album of six No. 1 singles on both the Mediabase Country chart and Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. Bryan may have 12 No. 1 songs under his belt, but he is showing no signs of slowing down. On Tuesday, Feb. 10, he started the winter leg of his That's My Kind of Night Tour. He will also bring his show to Europe for the first time. Read more here.
In an interview with the local Fox 5 TV station in Atlanta, Bobbi Kristina's aunt, Leolah Brown says when she first saw her niece hooked up to a ventilator in the hospital she was "very numb to see her." "It's been very, very painful for everybody. Mainly Bobby [Brown], because that's his baby," she said of Bobbi Kristina's father. But, Bobbi Kristina's aunt says her niece is "doing better" and that she is "hopeful" that Bobbi Kristina will recover. "She is doing better," she said. "So let's be hopeful. I'm asking people to pray. There are so many signs showing us that she will be OK. Krissi is fine," she said, before noting one of those signs. "She's opening her eyes. Krissi is doing well right now. She is." Read more here.
The art in question is a gif from Rebecca Mock that appeared in a recent Jack U teaser trailer of their collaboration with Missy Elliott. Mock called out Diplo on Twitter, and the DJ responded by saying, "I credited her what you want me to do?" Diplo went on to suggest a couple obscene alternatives to credit. (Via CoS) Diplo went on to amend the Instagram post of the teaser to include Mock's credit, but the damage had been done. "The credit was retroactive, without my consent, and not even a proper tag," Mock said on her personal Facebook (via Reddit). "His comments were atrocious and inexcusable." See the post here.
But in a surprise twist, West debuted a new song for those in attendance: "Wolves," featuring Sia and Vic Mensa. Currently there's no word on when "Wolves," which according to a tweet is the first song off the new album, will drop in full on the Internet. "Wolves" follows "Only One" and "All Day" as tastes of West's new album, though it's unclear if the latter will be featured on the record. Either way, the album will mark West's first since 2013's Yeezus. Read more here.
But while "How Big" was a welcome sight for fans of Florence Welch and co., it seemed like more of a teaser than a first single--which, as it turns out, was partially right: it's not the single, it's the name of the album. "What Kind of Man" is the single. The song hit the Internet Thursday (Feb. 12), bringing with it a forceful but leveled guitar attack after starting as a softer, choral-like tune, replete with organs. "What kind of man loves like this?" she demands over guitar and a pounding bass drum. In addition to the song, the band released a music video for the song. Check it out here.
"I think it is the most representative of not only who I am as an artist but where I'm from," Hoge said in a press release. "I think every song from the record is deeply inspired by growing up in Nashville and Franklin, Tennessee, and watching this area grow and change and become something that it wasn't 25 years ago. He added: "I feel like as an artist, I've gone through that same transformation. So I feel like it's literally in my blood and it all came out on this record and I'm super excited for people to be able to to take that journey with us musically." More details here.
Titled Oh Gussie! Cooking and Visiting in Kimberly's Southern Kitchen, the book mixes recipes with stories of her upbringing, her life at home and her travels with the band. The book is set for release on April 14. 'I've been so excited about this that I could hardly stand the wait!" Schlapman said in a press statement. 'When I'm not on stage with Little Big Town, you can probably find me in my kitchen. As long as I've been singing, I've been cooking. I have poured my heart and soul into this book, and I hope these recipes and stories will inspire you and bring you closer to the ones you love as you fill up their bellies--and their hearts." "I saw the guy, Kanye, who's always yammering away, he manages to say the wrong thing," Spade said. "And he said it to Beck, which stings a little more, because I look like Beck. "I wanna like Kanye," he continued. "But it's virtually impossible. I've been trying! I mean, Beyonce, how much can she do before she can catch a break in this town? He's so mad about it." But he admitted that West's music is pretty undeniable: "But then I hear a song of his and I go, 'He's all right!' And then he talks and I don't like him again. I don't know much about girls, but when you're with Kim [Kardashian] and all you do is fawn about how great Beyonce is, she's like, 'What about me, babe? I do stuff.'" Kimmel laughed, "You don't see Jay Z doing that!" "[Beyonce's] talented, it's different," Spade replied. Read more here.
The pop singer, whose previous video for "Break Free" found her frolicking around in outer space (possibly on an old 1960s Star Trek set), will venture into the future. A teaser she posted to her Instagram shows just a smidgen of fictionalized news casts reporting on the end of the world. So will the apocalypse be a party? Will it be based on more 1960s sci-fi, like a Ray Bradbury story? The world will know what's in Ariana's head in three days. Or the world is coming to an end in three days. Check out the teaser here.
The aim of the Surrealists was to tap into the unconscious mind. They painted images from dreams that were thought to be a mix of memory and sense impressions that unlocked something of a person's soul. Whether it be a statement from the artist or the impression it made on the viewer of the art, it was meant to be a revealing sort of thing. It was seen by the artists as philosophical movement. So here, Imagine Dragons clearly want to use the music on their new album to tap into your unconscious feelings. The imagery is simply a means of beating you about the head with that idea. You've got to ask yourself: what does the snake say about YOU? Watch the video here.
The over 14-minute clip starts with a dark shot of Drake in a car taking him through his hometown of Toronto with him spouting off lines about balancing his own sanity. "I'm f-ing drinking more, smoking more," he says, before noting he's not so far gone yet, "I'm not losing it though, I'm just venting." Finally, he stops at a overlook to take a bird's eye view of his city where old video footage shows what life used to be for Drake, including a clip from 2008 where he can't get into a club. And a not to be missed lil Drake rapping his heart out. Oh, those glasses. Watch it here.
Stringed replicas of Iglesias and his guest star prance around on the prowl for female attention, which takes them into the danger zone: a women's bathroom. Iglesias' doppelganger startles a woman in a stall, and the two scamper off to the floor of a mini-mall. There they meet their match in a pair of blonde puppets, who they drive around in a miniature car. Read more and watch the video here.
He's also receiving life advice from the greatest spiritual guru of our time: his 16-year-old son Jaden Smith, according to The Guardian. 'I went into the studio with Kanye. I'm thinking about it. I'm exploring," he said, while giving a speech in London at a screening of his new film Focus. 'I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet but I'm exploring," he added. "I'm in a creative ceiling. My son tells me I have to write out the things I don't like." Read more here.
The music industry-based drama guided by Academy Award-nominated director Lee Daniels (Precious, The Butler) turned up the already Dynasty-level drama to another level with the introduction of Love's character, the drug-addled former rock superstar, Elle Dallas. Love makes an immediate impact with her very first scene, where she arrives for a business meeting with label head Lucious Lyon (Terence Howard) and his ex-wife Cookie (played by the show's breakout star, Taraji P. Henson) draped in fur and with a full entourage in tow. "I kind of took the diva-ness of Mariah [Carey], who I know socially and really like, but she's always with four people," Love told TV Guide about her character. "She's got a bodyguard and stuff like that, which I don't need. Mariah is her own universe and I adore her, but she's hilarious. Some of Whitney [Houston] and the tragedy of Whitney. A little [Amy] Winehouse I think. We're following a little of that story. So I mixed it up. A little Stevie [Nicks]. I always steal from Stevie anyway." In the message, in the form of a diss track, via TMZ, Prince blasts Diddy, Suge Knight, Lil Wayne and Birdman. "Drake is family and the weak s- from Puffy and Suge is on my radar," Prince said. "First of all, Puffy feelin' like he can put his hands on my family, open the doors for his family to be touched. You reap what you sow. And to Suge . . . you know I ride with Drake so I accept any invitation you want to bring. I'm your worst nightmare . . . if any of you clowns cross me or my family, bad news. Gonna beat you home." Sporting a spiffy vintage Oakland Raiders jacket, he boldly predicts that the team will win the AFC West next season ("They've got some really exciting young players, like quarter back Derek Carr"). When talk turns to the album, however, his demeanor takes a more serious turn. Even more dramatically diverse than the band's breakout debut, Megalithic Symphony (which featured the global smash, "Sail,") RUN moves from the tense minimal electro of the opening title track to the sweeping an anthemic "I Am" to quietly acoustic moments like "Headrest for My Soul." The cleverly arranged songs often cover that much territory over the course of a single track. RUN is an intriguing listen, one that draws the listener in deeper with each play. Preparing to lead AWOLNATION on an extensive U.S. tour this summer, Bruno appears primed and ready to get back into the fray of rock and roll life. "I can't say why necessarily, but I can tell you I was happy to sort of re-energize our fan base and get people excited and want to come to the shows for the same reasons I loved going to shows as a kid, which is to have an interactive experience and sweat a little bit with the band," he says when asked why shape-shifting "Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)" was chosen as the first single from the album. "Get people excited and hyped to get on the dance floor again." Radio.com: Any thoughts on which song will be the next single? Aaron Bruno: Much like the first record, I kept my head down and did the best I could, didn't have any extreme expectations for any sort of commercial success. I just wanted to be proud and give something to listeners that was very sincere and hopefully create an escape. I think I accomplished that with the new record on another level, hopefully. But as far as what single's gonna happen, I'm not sure. I'll leave that up to the stars aligning. I have an idea, but this is truly an album's album. It's a music lover's album, I think. It's the record I always wanted to make, so it's really not about singles to me. It's about the whole thing, and how it feels front to end. Whatever comes out of those batch of songs that ends up having a life of its own, that's a huge bonus. But first and foremost, it's about the whole album to me. Radio.com: A song that immediately stood out to me was "I Am." It feels like a real self-empowering anthem Aaron Bruno: That may or may not be the second single. It started with a real special guitar that was given to me by my dad. I actually kind of adopted it and stole it. Just this simple, kind of garage sale nylon string guitar. I wrote (the song) real late at night. At least the intro, the first verse. Didn't think much about it, and then months later we listened to my phone recording, my voice memo, and heard that initial idea and thought, OK, this seems cool, let's work on this. It kind of wrote itself and was a pretty easy song to write. That's usually a good sign for me. Read more and watch the full video interview here.
The band's debut LP, The Balcony, has just been released stateside, but is already a hit in the UK, peaking at No. 10 on the charts. Even with the band's single, 'Kathleen" starting to receive a big radio push in the U.S., McCann doesn't get held up on the disparity of their popularity across the pond. 'In our heads, we're blowing up in America," McCann tells Radio.com. He notes that it took the band seven years to get where they are in the UK, and the band has only toured America twice, the current run continuing well into March and seeing major cities on both coasts. "We figure we are seven years ahead here," he says. 'It feels good coming from playing a 5,000 capacity event back home to playing 300 or 500 people here. Those are the sized venues we came up in, so it feels a bit like coming home." Humble beginnings characterize the project. One of the first things listed on the band's Wikipedia is that McCann was an IVF baby, meaning that he was conceived in a test tube. This might seem trivial for a band's history, but it is something that McCann brings up unprovoked in discussion. 'It makes me feel lucky to be here," McCann says, 'or, luckier. I guess everything affects who we are and why we are that way and why we want to get massive and play stadiums. It's all this lust for life." Read more here.
Skin was probably one of the easiest, most organic songs for me to write! I had just gotten home from the cigar lounge my friend and I chill at ( shout out Big Buddha woot woot) and I poured myself a glass of cherry wine. Drinking naturally leads to cooking random things- I thought trying to make a BBQ pasta sauce was a good idea ( not so much haha) and began singing a melody. Blame it on the BBQ sauce, the cigars or the classic cherry wine- but it was magic! Long story short, I wanted to sum up who I was as a nerdy, quiet child to the tatted up, artsy fartsy, outspoken woman I became. The lyrics are sort of a metaphor to that change with things that became a piece of me as I discovered who I truly was. When I went to the studio the next day to write some tunes with Rob (Thorne) I was all excited for him to jam to these haunting & simple chords on the baby grand, and when I sang "Get f***ed on champagne," we both burst out laughing. It was a total like "wow we are just TOO cool" moment. He had just gotten this rad new mic for the studio and this was the first song recorded on it- total honor and something I will always remember with this song! I hope you all enjoy- stay tuned for the rest of the record! Thank you for listening! Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the Kateri right here!
