Day in Rock Report for 07/11/2024

From The Zombies' Management: We are saddened to report that Rod Argent, founder, keyboardist & primary songwriter of The Zombies, has suffered a stroke. Rod had recently returned home from a triumphant Zombies tour of the UK, and spent a weekend in London with his beloved wife Cathy, celebrating his 79th birthday and their 52nd wedding anniversary, before the stroke occurred. He was hospitalized overnight, and released the next day. Doctors have advised that Rod will need several months of rest and recuperation.

Rod has asked us to convey that he has made the very difficult decision to immediately retire from touring in order to protect his health. He was already preparing to wind down his live performance schedule after health scares on recent tours (a Fall 2024 USA run was in the works that was intended to be his final overseas tour, and a farewell to the country that launched The Zombies' career in 1964). However, the stroke was an unmistakable warning sign that the risks are too great. Rod still firmly intends to continue his other creative joy of writing and recording with The Zombies, and has already been back at his piano for some much-needed "Bach therapy". (continue)

Rock singer-songwriter Tristan Tritt today released his new single "Rose Colored Lenses" from his debut EP What Are We Doing?, due out this summer. "Rose Colored Lenses" is Tristan breaking the mold again, this time, showing off his ability to write a tender, emotional ballad. Tristan's voice soars above an acoustic guitar, displaying his dynamic range.

Tristan says, "This song is a fictional story about a girl who finds the night life a bit too enticing. It's the quintessential archetype of a beautiful woman who finds her crowd within the festival and over all music scene. It starts out as fun and glamorous, but the sad truth starts to unfold throughout the song. Substance abuse begins to take hold of this poor girl's life, and what was once a beautiful world seen through 'rose colored lenses,' is now nothing more than a sinister and vicious cycle. She's losing herself and trying to chase that same feeling of euphoria that she had in the beginning, only now she can't. In a matter of time, her glow and shimmer turns into an opaque dullness." Los Angeles rocker Frankie + The Studs have just released their new single and video "Bimini", the lead track from their forthcoming debut album, and to celebrate we asked Frankie to tell us about the track. Here is the story:

My friend Stewart Cararas and I were on a roll writing together. We had been writing together since I started the band, and during lockdown we had a lot of time on our hands. We were getting a little more experimental with different sounds and instrumentations. We just let whatever flow come out without judgment. One day Stewart sent me a demo of a song with music, a scratch vocal, and some improvised lyrics. I immediately loved the song and could really picture the band playing this one live. So I wrote lyrics to it and actually included some misheard lyrics from the original scratch vocal take that Stewart sent. (continue)
