Forum Auctions is to offer an original watercolour by British artist Gerald Scarfe (b. 1936), the artist commissioned to create the artwork for the legendary rock band Pink Floyd's iconic album The Wall, which included the legendary song "We Don't Need No Education". The album would become one of the band's most successful albums when it was released in November 1979.
Devised by the band's bassist Roger Waters (b. 1943), the album was a rock opera centred around the character of Pink, a disillusioned rock star who builds a psychological 'wall' of social isolation to protect himself. Waters based the character of Pink on himself and former Pink Floyd member, guitarist and song-writer Syd Barrett (1946-2006). The album was a huge commercial success, topping the US charts for 15 weeks and reaching number three in the UK. It would later be dubbed one of the greatest albums of all time. (continue)

Frontman Henry Cox had this to say about the track, "Sliding Doors is named after that movie of the same name. I called it that because when we were writing it I started thinking about all of the decisions that I've made that have led me to the life I have and how circumstantial a lot of it is. It got me thinking about how Boston Manor started. I'd had a few conversations with Dan [Cunniff, bass] and Mike [Cunniff, lead guitar] (who I barely knew at the time) about starting a band. But at that time I was in art school in a different city and I had a bunch of other stuff going on. I was also starting like two other bands with different people so I figured it was just something that you talk about. (continue)

Pink Floyd announce the winners of 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' animation competition, championed by YouTube. To tie in with the 50th Anniversary of 'The Dark Side Of The Moon', Pink Floyd invited a new generation of animators to enter a competition to create music videos for any of the 10 songs on the iconic 1973 album. Pink Floyd has a rich history of collaborating with animators from the beginnings of the band (Ian Emes, Gerald Scarfe, etc.), and in some cases the visuals that accompany the songs have become synonymous with the music itself. The 50th Anniversary was no exception. The band gave all animators an opportunity to present a fresh take on these timeless aural works. Animators could enter up to 10 videos, one per song on the album.
The competition was conceived by Pink Floyd's long-time Creative Consultant Aubrey 'Po' Powell. He was overwhelmed by the standard and quantity of entries from all over the globe: "Given that it was the 50th anniversary of the album, and with the band's history of working with animation both in videos and on stage, we felt this needed to be acknowledged. It was a huge success with over 900 films being entered and the process of elimination for the judges was very complex. They eventually came up with the final 10 and I can only say they were brilliant choices and representative of the diverse styles of entries that all gave deep respect to the legacy of the band." Evidently Kenny Chesney isn't the only one who's excited about getting the Sun Goes Down 2024Tour on the road. With two-and-a-half weeks until kick-off, No Shoes Nation has rallied to already drive three cities into the sold-out zone. After adding an unprecedented third show at Foxborough, Mass.'s Gillette Stadium, the almost-annual end of summer/end of tour closer two-night outside Boston expanded to three nights - and then sold out, along with the always fever pitch Philadelphia Lincoln Financial Field show and tour kick-off at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium.
"I know how hungry I am, and the band is, to get out there and hear No Shoes Nation in full, no holds barred voice," Chesney says. "And that starts not long after they open the parking lots up, and the sounds of all that tailgating starts wafting into our bus compounds. Sometimes I think they love these shows as much as we do. But knowing how much we love playing these songs to No Shoes Nation, it's hard to imagine how that's possible." (continue)
Toronto-based rock trio The Vaniers [van-ee-ays] recently released their new single "Charlie", from their forthcoming sophomore album, and to celebrate we asked Diego Paz (bass/vocals) to tell us about the song. Here is the story:
The inspiration behind the song: The attitude of Charlie comes from some of our underlying influences within the 90's California desert rock scene and early British punk-rock, and attempting to channel that same energy and punchiness into a hard-hitting rock tune. We really wanted the lyrics to tell a story in this one, and although Charlie is a fictional character, the sentiment is still very real to so many of us. At heart, it's about going all in on something you believe in, and getting away from any noise that might stand in the way of that - there's a little Charlie in all of us. (continue)
