Love Blue Thumb Reissues |
They recorded one of the most influential albums of the late '60s in the folk-rocking Forever Changes, an album that took 20 years to be fully appreciated and has been recently reissued in a deluxe edition. But the band Love, fronted by tortured genius Arthur Lee, switched musical gears almost immediately after recording its masterpiece. Lee recruited a whole new Love to record the both band's final Elektra album, Four Sail, and its 1969 Blue Thumb double-album debut, Out Here. With a change of guitarists and the recruitment of Jimi Hendrix on one track, Love followed with False Start in 1970. The two Blue Thumb albums will be reissued for the first time on CD by Collectors' Choice Music on June 10, 2008.
The new lineup Lee recruited after Forever Changes included Jay Donnellan, guitar; Frank Fayad, bass; and George Suranovich, who curiously hailed from doo-wop origins, on drums. Donnellan had brought an acoustic guitar to his audition only to be told that Love no longer sounded like that. However, fans of Forever Changes and its predecessors, Love and Da Capo, will discover stray echoes of the classic Love sound amidst Out Here's 17 tracks, namely "Willow Willow," "Listen To My Song" and "Gather Round." Additionally, hard blues-based rock entered the mix on this album, including a heavier version of "Signed D.C." from Love's debut. Out Here, recorded in a shabby home studio just beneath Laurel Canyon in Hollywood, included such songs as "Abalony," "I'll Pray For You," "Instra-Mental" and "Car Lights On in the Daytime." And there's some reassurance to be had that Lee still had a song title in him like "Love is More Than Words or Better Late Than Never."
Guns N' Linkin Motley Jam |
Camp Freddy is a jam band featuring Billy Morrison, Dave Navarro, Matt Sorum, Donovan Leitch and Chris Chaney and they're in the midst of a five week residency on Thursday nights at The Roxy in Hollywood. Last week they kicked it off with Steve Jones and Paul Cook of The Sex Pistols, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains, Steven Perkins of Jane's Addiction, Poe, Corey Parks of Nashville Pussy and Die Hunns, Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, Warren DeMartini of Ratt and Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath (McGrath is set to play all five shows.)
This week's show had even more star power. Jones and Cook from the Pistols returned, as did Jerry Cantrell. But they brought in some new guests as well with Slash and Duff from Velvet Revolver/Guns N' Roses, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Billy Duff of The Cult, and Leah Duors and Hayley Cramer of McQueen. Plus Tommy Lee must be over his being over rock because he showed up as well.

Metallica Recording Epic Songs, Plan Behind The Scenes Site, and Add a Gig |
First Encycmet.com has a cool story about running into the band's former producer Bob Rock at a movie theatre. Here is part of what they had to say about the encounter, " [Bob Rock] says that he actually just spoke to Lars and that he's heard 8 of the new songs and that they are: around 8 minutes long, have really long solos, and that the songs sound awesome and very old-school!! I ask him if we'll hear some new songs during the upcoming summer tour, and he says that we should actually hear the first SINGLE in a matter of weeks." read the full report
Encycmet.com also reports: Lars Ulrich told a Los Angeles radio station on Monday that the new site, MissionMetallica.com, will showcase a "making-of-the-album" like what was available on the DVD in the St.Anger package.. Ulrich explained, "We thought, instead of doing the DVDs and all that, why don't we just do it on the Internet and people can kind of tune in every day, watch clips, contests, get updates for what's going on with the record and kind of watch the last couple of months of song titles, album titles, final mixes...So it's kind of a little bit of a countdown type of thing. It should be fun." full report
Finally Metallica posted an update on their website to let fans know about a new gig they are playing
