Armed Forces Week: Day 3 "Now, Now People" |
This one is probably anthem of the record and my personal favorite. Given the explicit references to drug use and the like, the only sensible thing to do was get a children's choir on the chorus...right? We never found anyone willing to let us borrow their kids, so we ended up tracking several takes of Matt Brown, myself, and our friend Chelsea Marie singing the call-backs and credited it in the liner notes as The North Sixth Street Children's Choir. The studio we were tracking at (The Bomb Shelter, Nashville) was on N. Sixth, so the name seemed fitting.
As a side note, I'm not ashamed to admit that I lifted the chorus chord progression from Junior Senior and the bridge guitar riff from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. So what?
Now go learn more about the group, check out some songs from the CD and see if you spot something rather interesting about
- the band.
Fall Out Boy Held Hostage |
Early Tuesday morning (March 25), Fall Out Boy got the bad news: Nasty weather conditions had canceled all flights in and out of Antarctica, meaning that their attempt to set a world record would have to wait for at least another day.
Ever since FOB arrived in [Santiago, Chili], the front doors of the Hotel Finis Terrae have been under siege, surrounded by an ever-growing, squealing gaggle of Fall Out Boy fans. For more than a day, there's been a constant screaming mass of students in gray school uniforms camped outside, which means that setting foot on the street is nearly impossible for the band. And even when they do venture outside their rooms, they're mobbed by fans who managed to slip through security and are wandering the halls of the hotel, like ghosts in Pac Man. All of which has made their Chilean trip a bit of a downer so far.

Slashing Zeppelin and Split Rumors |
Slash on the rumor they will be opening a Led Zeppelin tour if that gets off the ground: "There's been a huge rumour going around about us opening for them and I think that was something that was taken out of context. ...I saw Robert last night and he's got his solo thing going on and as far as Velvet Revolver is concerned, we've got another record to do and we're not even thinking about that."
It was widely reported that Scott Weiland told fans at their Glasgow concert last Thursday night that were witnessing the "the last tour by Velvet Revolver." That proclaimation led to a war of words between Weiland and Matt Sorum (see Monday's Day in Rock). Newbeat says that it is something Slash doesn't seem comfortable discussing. He simply told them, "Well, lets put it this way - this is not Velvet Revolver's last tour."
- He also discussed his upcoming solo project. Read the BBC report for that and more on the above rumors
Wanna Taste Madonna's Candy? |
"HARD CANDY" has been described as a brilliant up-tempo collection of 12 songs in which Madonna remains ensconced in club mode but this time adds an urban hip hop beat in collaboration with musical partners Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes and Nate "Danja" Hills. The debut single, the pulsating "4 Minutes" will be released at the end of March.
"The title is a juxtaposition of tough and sweetnesskind of like I'm gonna kick your ass but it's going to make you feel good. And of course, I love candy" laughed the material girl.

Pumpkin Sue Label Over Cola Pimping |
In a breach-of-contract lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the band said it has "worked hard for over two decades to accumulate a considerable amount of goodwill in the eyes of the public," and that Virgin's use of the band in a "Pepsi Stuff" promotion with Amazon.com and Pepsi Co. threatens their reputation for "artistic integrity."
Virgin released the Smashing Pumpkins' music for more than 17 years, but the only active agreement between the two parties, the lawsuit claims, is a deal granting Virgin permission to sell digital downloads of the band's songs.

Carly Simon Venti Decaf Latte Release |
This Kind of Love ranks among Simon's most personal albums as well as one of her most stylistically diverse excursions with songs ranging from gorgeous melodies to driving rhythms. The CD is co-produced by Simon, Frank Filipetti and Jimmy Webb who also wrote or co-wrote most of the arrangements. Filipetti worked his talent as the engineer as well as producer. The three first teamed up for Film Noir, Simon's album of standards that Webb produced in 1997.
The musical inspiration of the CD comes from Simon's fascination with Brazilian music, whose rhythms are subtly infused throughout. Even though she grew up listening to such classic artists as Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa, it was Simon's recent discovery of modern-day Brazilian musicians Caetano Veloso and Jorge Ben that made her realize "you don't have to be singing bossa nova or samba to get the essence [of Brazilian music]. There are songs that fit no one rhythm or generic type or song progression."
