Kid Rock Beats Motley Crue Where It Matters Most
antiMusic reports: Remember back when Kid Rock gave Motley Crue's Tommy Lee a love tap at the VMAs? Tommy said of Rock at the time, "This is what people do when they have sh*tty albums and their careers are going down the drain." It looks like Kid Rock might have the last laugh as his 9-month-old "sh*tty" album soared ahead in sales against Motley's two-week-old effort.

Rock's latest album "Rock N Roll Jesus" debuted at the top of the charts last October with first week sales of 172,000. Motley Crue's "Saints of Los Angeles" debuted on the charts last week at No. 4 with 99,000 copies sold, but the effort took a nose dive its second week in stores, dropping to down to No. 16 after a 69% sales decrease. Meanwhile, Rock's album went the other direction, jumping 5 spots up to No. 7 in the charts having sold 45,000 additional copies in its 39th week in stores. Tommy might want to hire a plumber, as Rock's career appears much further away from the drain than his own.

But who's on top? Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" returns to the top of The Billboard 200 this week, according to Billboard. The Cash Money/Universal album moved 156,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan

Meanwhile, Fiddy's G-Unit's new effort had a good sales week but sold less than a third of their previous release. According to E! "T.O.S. (Terminate on Sight)", the rap crew's first album in five years, managed only a No. 4 debut on sales of 102,000 copies. Comparing opening weeks, that's 275,000 fewer copies than 2003's "Beg for Mercy".

John Mayer scored the week's only other Top 10 debut, coming in at No. 5 after selling 75,000 copies of "Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles." While Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" dropped to No. 2 on 149,000; and the Camp Rock soundtrack stayed at No. 3, with 116,000. - more on this week's charts

antiMusic reports: What follows is a cautionary tale to always leave the headbanging to the professionals unless you want to go blind! Blabbermouth has the tale of emo-woe: The bass player for the Edinburgh, United Kingdom-based "emo-esque metal" band The Day I Vanished has gone partially blind after headbanging too much at a gig.

Richard Allan, 21, felt his eyesight go blurry after his show on Friday night and assumed he had been dazzled by stage lights.

But the bass player had actually torn his retina as he jumped around the stage to his band's tunes. Now Allan faces emergency surgery and the possibility of wearing an eye patch. - more on this story

Music Biz Has A Death Wish
Reuters reports: Tomorrow's headline: The RIAA killed the radio star. Some might say that greed breeds stupidity. A perfect case in point is the music business, who seem to take every opportunity to shoot themselves in the foot. Their latest move is to have the politicians they purchased push through a bill that may kill one of their most effective methods of promoting their artists: Radio! On the other hand this is great news for fans of Talk Radio as the music biz seems content to try and kill off music on the dial. Great to see Congress spending time on issues important to all Americans. Billboard has the report:

Chances appear slim that Congress will vote this year on legislation requiring terrestrial radio stations to pay artists and labels performance royalties to play their recordings. Nonetheless, signs are emerging that the recording industry is making some headway in its precedent-breaking fight to extract new royalty payments from broadcasters.

A resounding voice vote June 27 by the House Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property in favor of the legislation sent the Performance Rights Act to the full House Judiciary Committee. - more on this story

Taj Mahal and Booker T. Jones To Head Blues Festival
conqueroo reports: Blues and world music legend Taj Mahal and Booker T. Jones will co-headline the Sunday, August 31 show of the Long Beach Blues Festival. In addition, Stax soul veteran Eddie Floyd has been added to the Sunday roster. The festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 30-31 in its breezy new oceanfront home, the Rainbow Lagoon at Linden Ave. and Shoreline Dr. adjacent to the Long Beach Marina. Previously booked Sly & the Family Stone cancelled their appearance at the festival, according to the festival's co-producers Bill Silva Presents and Rum & Humble.

One of the most prominent figures in late 20th century blues, singer/multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal played an enormous role in revitalizing and preserving traditional acoustic blues. Not content to stay within that realm, Mahal soon broadened his approach, taking a musicologist's interest in a multitude of folk and roots music from around the world reggae and other Caribbean folk, jazz, gospel, R&B, zydeco, various West African styles, Latin, even Hawaiian. The African-derived heritage of most of those forms allowed Mahal to explore his own ethnicity from a global perspective and to present the blues as part of a wider musical context. Yet while he dabbled in many different genres, he never strayed too far from his laid-back country blues foundation.

Exodus Do Over
PR reports: For the troops in the trenches, it began in 1982 with a low generation copy of a local band's three-song demo. For some, it began with their first listen to Combat Records' version of "Bonded By Blood" in 1986. Regardless of the year, Exodus are the undeniable forefathers of thrash metal.

Exodus gained huge notoriety in the international underground scene as a result of the tape trading community. Their dynamic guitar riffing, adrenaline-inducing drum work, and bloodied live shows made all the difference in the band's mission to take Bay Area Thrash to a worldwide audience. The immortal, must-have, thrash classic "Bonded By Blood" was released in 1985 via Torrid Records (then re-released in 1986 on Combat Records), and inspired the likes of Testament, Death Angel, Vio-lence and many others. To this day "Bonded By Blood" is inspiring a whole new breed of thrash metal. Gary Holt, songwriter and lead guitarist of Exodus, has released the following statement about the band's decision to revisit this classic album that began an era in music history.

"After many years in the planning and discussion stage, we have finally completed the re-recording of 'Bonded By Blood.' We have decided to call it 'Let There Be Blood' and it is our way of paying homage to [original singer] Paul Baloff by showing how relevant these songs we had written together still are. We aren't trying to replace the original, that's impossible anyway. We are just giving these songs the benefit of modern production. It's something we talked about before Paul's death and it's always been important to us to do. We were super excited about entering the studio once again to record these classics, and now it's back to writing the next studio record!" - more on this story

Produced by Al Clay (Pixies, Blur, Pink), the 11-song offering captivates the listener out of the gate from the opening notes of its pulsing debut single "Not A Love Song," for which the duo just wrapped a surreal video with the production team Draw Pictures (Depeche Mode, The Bravery, Franz Ferdinand, Mark Ronson). To celebrate the release we asked frontman Ron Underwood to pick his favorite tracks from the effort and tell us a little bit about each one. Here is Ron with today's song:

Dead Underground- This song is crazy. I literally wrote it in my sleep. I dreamt the chorus line, "Wake Up, Wake Up..." and it woke me up. Luckily I had an acoustic guitar within reach and I just elaborated on the idea.

The music started out as a dumb, four-chord progression with chromatic climbs, set to a shuffle a la AFI's "Silver and Cold" or something from Danzig. The sleazy "Thin Lizzy" guitar harmonies came after the vocals had been worked out further. The solo was written and played pretty much on the fly with my band and the producer standing around me saying, "do something cool here". My approach was to keep it way simple and milk the ---- out of those sleazy bends. It definitely calls for Jim (our guitarist/programmer) to climb out on a platform and make guitar faces every night when he hits those notes live. - more on this story
