Top 5 stories for second half this week |
Kid Rock Beats Motley Crue Where It Matters Most |
Rock's latest album "Rock N Roll Jesus" debuted at the top of the charts last October with first week sales of 172,000. Motley Crue's "Saints of Los Angeles" debuted on the charts last week at No. 4 with 99,000 copies sold, but the effort took a nose dive its second week in stores, dropping to down to No. 16 after a 69% sales decrease. Meanwhile, Rock's album went the other direction, jumping 5 spots up to No. 7 in the charts having sold 45,000 additional copies in its 39th week in stores. Tommy might want to hire a plumber, as Rock's career appears much further away from the drain than his own.
But who's on top? Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" returns to the top of The Billboard 200 this week, according to Billboard. The Cash Money/Universal album moved 156,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan
Meanwhile, Fiddy's G-Unit's new effort had a good sales week but sold less than a third of their previous release. According to E! "T.O.S. (Terminate on Sight)", the rap crew's first album in five years, managed only a No. 4 debut on sales of 102,000 copies. Comparing opening weeks, that's 275,000 fewer copies than 2003's "Beg for Mercy".
John Mayer scored the week's only other Top 10 debut, coming in at No. 5 after selling 75,000 copies of "Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles." While Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" dropped to No. 2 on 149,000; and the Camp Rock soundtrack stayed at No. 3, with 116,000.

Exodus Do Over |
Exodus gained huge notoriety in the international underground scene as a result of the tape trading community. Their dynamic guitar riffing, adrenaline-inducing drum work, and bloodied live shows made all the difference in the band's mission to take Bay Area Thrash to a worldwide audience. The immortal, must-have, thrash classic "Bonded By Blood" was released in 1985 via Torrid Records (then re-released in 1986 on Combat Records), and inspired the likes of Testament, Death Angel, Vio-lence and many others. To this day "Bonded By Blood" is inspiring a whole new breed of thrash metal. Gary Holt, songwriter and lead guitarist of Exodus, has released the following statement about the band's decision to revisit this classic album that began an era in music history.
"After many years in the planning and discussion stage, we have finally completed the re-recording of 'Bonded By Blood.' We have decided to call it 'Let There Be Blood' and it is our way of paying homage to [original singer] Paul Baloff by showing how relevant these songs we had written together still are. We aren't trying to replace the original, that's impossible anyway. We are just giving these songs the benefit of modern production. It's something we talked about before Paul's death and it's always been important to us to do. We were super excited about entering the studio once again to record these classics, and now it's back to writing the next studio record!"

Opiate For the Masses Week: Day 3 |
Dead Underground- This song is crazy. I literally wrote it in my sleep. I dreamt the chorus line, "Wake Up, Wake Up..." and it woke me up. Luckily I had an acoustic guitar within reach and I just elaborated on the idea.
The music started out as a dumb, four-chord progression with chromatic climbs, set to a shuffle a la AFI's "Silver and Cold" or something from Danzig. The sleazy "Thin Lizzy" guitar harmonies came after the vocals had been worked out further. The solo was written and played pretty much on the fly with my band and the producer standing around me saying, "do something cool here". My approach was to keep it way simple and milk the ---- out of those sleazy bends. It definitely calls for Jim (our guitarist/programmer) to climb out on a platform and make guitar faces every night when he hits those notes live.
