Tuesday
On Tuesday we took part in the Day of Silence. Here is some information on that
Day of Silence for the Day in Rock
PR reports: Tomorrow, June 26, thousands of webcasters / Internet radio stations will be observing a day of silence in protest of the Copyright Royalty Board's outrageous royalty rate hike. While we do not webcast and the royalty hike does not hit us directly we are joining the webcasters in this protest, many of which will have to shutdown if the rates take effect because the rates will exceed 100% of their profit. To add insult to injury, these rates will be retroactive and only hurt online radio as over-the-air radio does not have to pay these specific royalties. So tomorrow the Day in Rock will not be published but will return on Wednesday.

You can help stop this from happening by contacting your members of Congress and asking them to support the The Internet Radio Equality Act, which will stop this unfair tax on Internet radio while insuring the stations pay their FAIR share of royalties (the same as Satellite radio). See the full story link for more information and to find the contact info for your members of Congress. - Click Here for the Full Story

In an interview after his performance, Pop launched into a long anecdote about going to Camden and visiting: "Paki shops."

Hosts Jo Whiley and Mark Radcliffe made no on-air apology on Saturday night (June 23) prompting three viewer complaints.[see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Eminem Beer?
Idolator.com reports: The music business' latest attempt to create new revenue streams comes from a division of Universal Music Group, which, in an attempt to ape Sammy Hagar's tequila success, has enlisted a beverage company to market drinks emblazoned with the likenesses of its artists:
Drinks Americas Holdings Ltd., the company behind a Donald Trump vodka, Willie Nelson's "Old Whiskey River" bourbon and a line of Paul Newman-branded juice drinks, is set to announce today an agreement with Universal Music Group's Interscope Geffen A&M label group. Universal Music Group is owned by French media conglomerate Vivendi SA.

The idea of the deal, executives of both companies said, is to come up with brands of drinks -- both alcoholic and nonalcoholic -- that bear the imprimatur of artists on Interscope's roster, which includes Eminem, producer Dr. Dre and Sting. [say what you want about David Geffen but he got rich the old fashioned way... by putting out music that people wanted but no other label had the balls to release. Surgery DeWarps The Used
PR reports: Bert McCracken has just been advised to undergo surgery due to the fact that he has developed a node on one of his vocal chords. Consequently, the band has been forced to cancel their shows on all upcoming dates during June and July, including the Van's Warped Tour. Doctors have recommended treatment as well as rest without singing and are expecting a full recovery. He will be able to sing again in about five weeks.

The band is incredibly disappointed but promised to return to touring in the USA in early September with headlining dates. "Kevin Lyman and the Van's Warped tour have been amazing supporters of our band and we are truly saddened that we won't be able to perform on this year's tour," states Quinn Allman, The Used's guitarist. We hope to have new tour details ready for release shortly. - Click Here for the Full Story

Country Jovi a Hit
PR reports: Going from hair rock to country worked for Bon Jovi. The band's new album "Lost Highway" debuted a top the Billboard album charts this week with sales of 292,000. The first No 1 for the band since the "hair metal" heyday of 1988.

The made of MTV band beat out The White Stripes for the top spot with 50,000 more units sold. Jack Whites latest "Icky Thump" moved 223,000 units for the No 2 spot. Country fans seemed to have turned to Jovi spandex as last week's chart topper Toby Keith's "Big Dog Daddy" suffered a 64% sales decline to land at No. 4 with 73,000.

Former chart toppers Linkin Park and Maroon 5 are hanging in there, remaining in the Top 10 another week.[see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Mom sues RIAA
Idolator.com reports: A disabled single mother from Beaverton has filed a federal lawsuit against the Recording Industry Association of America, claiming that she is the victim of abusive legal tactics, threats and illegal spying as part of an overzealous campaign to crack down on music pirating.

The recording industry sued Tanya J. Andersen, 44, in 2005, accusing her of violating copyright laws by illegally downloading music onto her computer. Andersen claims in a suit she filed last week in U.S. District Court in Oregon that the recording industry refused to drop its case after its own expert supported her claims of innocence.

Instead, industry officials threatened to interrogate Andersen's 10-year-old daughter, Kylee, if she didn't pay thousands of dollars. The intimidation included attempts to contact Kylee directly. A woman claiming to be Kylee's grandmother called the girl's former elementary school inquiring about her attendance, according to Andersen's suit. 50 Cent Lip Sync
Contact Music reports: 50 CENT was left red-faced at the B.E.T. Awards on Tuesday night (27Jun07) after fans spotted him lip-syncing his new single onstage. Sources tell MediaTakeOut.com the rapper was caught out when he mimed the lyrics to Amusement Park over an instrumental version of the track mistakenly played by his DJ Whoo Kidd. One eagle-eyed audience member who spotted the split-second gaffe, says, "The whole thing was so embarrassing. To get caught like that in front of millions of people is almost unimaginable." Dark Payola
Idolator.com reports: The hearing on Internet radio royalties is still going on, and while we haven't heard many updates on it (testimony from WOXY's Bryan Jay Miller is already up on YouTube), we did come across a piece in the SF Weekly that talks about another potentially homogenizing twist within the Copyright Royalty Board's new rate structure:

If Net radio stations don't win their fight, playing whatever they want will become prohibitively expensive. Playing crap, however, won't be. Under the new rules it would be economically logical for cash-strapped Webcasters to take discounted rates to play music the labels want them to play. Instead of the labels paying the Webcasters, the Webcasters pay the labels less. Dark payola.[see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story
