Idol Cut Pink and Gwen
TMZ reports: Last night's "American Idol" charity benefit concert, "Idol Gives Back," included performances by Kelly Clarkson, Josh Groban -- even a pre-taped-from-the-crypt Celine Dion/Elvis Presley duet -- which TMZ exclusively revealed on Monday. But Gwen Stefani and P!nk -- who had been previously announced as participants -- failed to get any screen time! Oh no they dit'nt!

Both Gwen and P!nk had pre-taped their performances, so their appearances just needed to be edited into the "live" telecast. Sources tell TMZ that the lovely ladies were "cut for time," and their segments should air on upcoming episodes of "Idol."

KCRW Drop Halloran
PR reports: [CMJ's News Editor sent over this disturbing news for indie fans] After 15 years of hosting Brave New World on KCRW, Tricia Halloran has left the station in a decision she claims wasn't her own, but is optimistic about future plans. She will be taking a brief hiatus from radio, and then will be "exploring various opportunities" while continuing her full-time position as director of A&R and the head of music supervision for Hum Music, which provides the soundtrack for Saturn and Honda commercials, as well as ABC's Men In Trees.

"It wasn't my decision and I can't really comment on their rationale, but I am very pleased with the work I've been able to do there for the last 15 years," Halloran says. "Change is good, and I hope the new rookies on KCRW will enjoy the opportunity to be authentic and share their love of good music as much as I have."

Brave New World explored many below the radar artists that have since taken on the mainstream. Through her many years hosting the show, Halloran has seen the likes of Pete Yorn, David Gray and the Eels blossom. "Career artists with integrity like these make my job so fulfilling," she says, citing All Smiles, Oliver Future and Everybody Else as a few artists she currently has high hopes for. Making a Deal with a Bunny
PR reports: What started as a 4-hour recording session and a YouTube viral video has landed Philadelphia-based Leah Kauffman (a.k.a. Bunny) a record deal with Rock Ridge Music. Kauffman is the voice behind the spoof song "My Box in a Box." Rock Ridge will be releasing the song digitally, and it will be available worldwide beginning May 15th. Rock Ridge also plans to offer ringtones and Bunny merchandise.

The video for the song has received over 8 million online views, and both Kauffman (and her alter ego video persona, played by a Philadelphia actress named Melissa Lamb) have made TV appearances about the song. "My Box In A Box" has also gotten worldwide radio airplay. The song, a parody response to a "Saturday Night Live" song performed by Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg, initially gained attention when it received over 1 million views in a single week. Following that, MSNBC made it the #1 story on their "Countdown with Keith Olberman" twice in the same week, calling it "The Viralist Video."- Click Here for the Full Story

Original Bad Brains Return with New Release
PR reports: The first proper Bad Brains studio album in over a decade, Build A Nation, is now scheduled to arrive in stores on June 26, 2007 on Megaforce Records. The album features all the original members of the group: HR, Darryl Jenifer, Dr. Know and Earl Hudson.

Produced by long time fan, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, Build A Nation is a return to form for the band that helped define American Punk and Hardcore music. It also represents the first studio album, outside Beastie Boys albums, to be recorded at the Beastie Boys' Oscilloscope laboratories and studio compound in New York City. "This album started in my studio with primal, classic Bad Brains intentions," commented bassist Darryl Jenifer. "I told Adam I was thinking about a new Brains' record, then Adam said 'Word! You should let me produce that s***, son! I'll smoke those other cats that tried to produce y'all. I'll make you sound real!' I said 'Word!' And the rest is history," continued Jenifer. "Adam took it in a direction that captured the S/T vibe, but with an honest, modern touch." [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

Tesla Go Real To Reel
PR reports: TESLA has always been revered as a bluesy, no-frills, '70s-style hard rock band, concentrating on solid musicianship more than the trends of modern music. Now, after selling over 16 million albums worldwide since bursting onto the scene in 1986, they're paying homage to their hard rock heroes on their sixth studio album, REAL TO REEL, due out June 5 on their own independent label, Tesla Electric Company Recordings (in partnership with Ryko Distribution).

REAL TO REEL-produced by TESLA and Tom Zutaut and recorded at the Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, TX--is a two-disc 25-song collection of classic rockers from the '60s and '70s, recorded through a vintage Neve console directly to Ampex 456 analog tape to capture the purity of these timeless and legendary songs. Goon Moon is Coming
PR reports: Goon Moon, the latest project of Jeordie White (Twiggy Ramirez/current NIN bassist) and Chris Goss (QOTSA producer/Masters Of Reality singer) is set for release on May 8th. The album is coming out via Mike Patton's Ipecac label. The album is an eclectic mix of stoner rock, jams and freak-outs. Led by Jeordie White, better known as Twiggy Ramirez to Marilyn Manson fans and current bassist for Nine Inch Nails, and Chris Goss, record producer and singer for Masters Of Reality. These two started jamming together and penning songs for fun. At one of these sessions White brought along Zach Hill of Hella to join in. With no expectations or pressure from a record label, the trio recorded a vast amount of songs by early 2005. From this pool of songs, they assembled a ten-track EP, 'I Got A Brand New Egg Layin' Machine' (whose title comes from an episode of the TV show Green Acres), released on Sucide Squeeze in June of 2005.

"Lickers Last Leg" will be the title of Goon Moon's upcoming full length album on Ipecac Recordings. Twelve songs and 5 years in the making, it can only be described as a collage of hippie/goth/retro sounds, covering a period from the 70's through the early 00's. Including a cover of the early Bee Gees' song, 'Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You'. Helping them out on this record are Josh Homme (QOTSA), Josh Freese (The Vandal/A Perfect Circle/NIN), Dave Catching (EODM/Mondo Generator), Whitey Kirst (Iggy Pop), and Peter Perdichizzi (The Flys).

Tick, tick, tick. The Conundrum of Mentally Ill Time Bombs
Editorial by Chris Armold reports: [The author of "A Vulgar Display Of Power: Courage and Carnage at the Alrosa Villa" reflects on madmen behind the VA Tech, the Alrosa Villa killings, and the means of prevention.] My first experience in dealing directly with a person suffering from a severe mental illness was 1982. I was a policeman in the USAF and every few months a man named "Carl" would approach the main gate of Grissom Air Force Base seeking help. His problem was perplexing. According to Carl, "the government" was reading his thoughts and monitoring his activities. I was the "Flight Sergeant," the equivalent of a civilian police departments shift supervisor. I held the rank of Staff Sergeant and was 22 years old. My gate guards would call me and tell me that "Carl" was at the gate looking for guidance. I'd always make a few calls; the hospital, the Veterans Administration and the base legal office asking for counsel. The results were always the same; No, I'd answer, Carl's never threatened anyone harm, nor has he spoken of violence and as far as I was concerned he was not a threat to himself or others. Our solution was simple; we would find a piece of tin foil and form-fit it to the crown of the baseball hat Carl always wore. With that "shield" in place, the government, the aliens or who ever was reading Carl's thoughts would be repelled by the reflective qualities of the foil. Carl would be placated and would wander off in the direction of Kokomo, Indiana.

While I felt sorry for this man burdened with his ailment, my young colleagues and I were also amused by it. We found it funny; this "psycho" wandering around with tin foil beneath his cap repelling the phantom intrusions into his mind.

25 years later I'm haunted by Carl and my apathy regarding his plight. However, my excuse for my lack of action then is the same as it is today. I didn't have a clue what to do, nor did anyone up my chain of command. While I've gained knowledge, insight and considerable compassion for people, I am saddened by the fact that there are innumerable "Carls" roaming our communities. Lost souls, misunderstood and suffering from demons that the unaffiliated can't begin to fathom. [see full story for the rest of the editorial]- Click Here for the Full Story
