Radiohead
Artist Interview |
antiMUSIC reports: You can't judge a book
by its cover but a good cover will leave a lasting impression, especially
when you are talking about album covers. Abby Road anyone? Through the
years an artform has emerged tied in with rock and a few artists' work
have become synonymous with the bands they create the artwork for. Mention
the name Derek Riggs and Iron Maiden fans will immediately know who you
are talking about, the same goes for Stanley Donwood, the man that has
given Radiohead a visual signature as distinct as their music. antiMUSIC
was fortunate enough to conduct an email interview with Stanley recently
to discuss his work for Radiohead, his writings and his new storefront
where fans can buy high quality screens of some of his favorite works.
antiMUSIC: What first inspired you to become
an artist?
Stanley: 'Artist' was just the most convenient
way to describe myself on application forms for unemployment benefit. I'm
not really sure if it describes what I spend my time doing. Obviously,
on the forms I couldn't write 'loafer', 'lazy sod' or 'dole scum' or they
would have refused my application. Looking back on the earlier years of
my existence, I suppose it was wax crayons that inspired my decision to
draw pictures.
antiMUSIC: How did you hook up with Radiohead?
Stanley: I think that my obsession with
nuclear apocalypse, Ebola pandemics, global cataclysm and Radiohead's particular
brand of unsettling melody have gone together quite well. How this came
about I can no longer accurately recall, as I have children and bringing
them up has rotted my brain. [see full story for the full interview]-

Depeche
Mode Preview |
Press Release reports: Depeche Mode's New
Album, Playing The Angel, Released October 18. Plus: World Premier Video,
and US Tour
Playing The Angel, an astonishingly fresh,
exuberant release, marks the 25th anniversary of Depeche Mode, the innovative,
influential recording unit. The band have sold upwards of 50 million records
worldwide and amassed a staggering 38 hit singles in the UK. With each
successive release they have managed to progress musically and lyrically,
establishing themselves as, alongside U2, the most consistently successful
British band of the post-punk period. Playing The Angel, released October
18, conveys a sense of optimism, of renewed vigor, of pleasure at what
they've achieved. That sense was provided, at least in part, by producer
Ben Hillier (Doves, Blur). "You have to work hard at reinventing yourself,"
admits Dave Gahan, "so you have to work with new people; people who push
you, with new ideas. We chose well when we chose Ben Hillier." But it's
still quintessential Mode. Listen to the first single, "Precious," for
a taste, and don't miss Depeche Mode's November - December U.S. tour. Check
out the Depeche Mode desktop application for the world premier "Precious"
video and full tour dates: (see the full story link for that)-

Tristan
Wins Again |
Virgin reports: For the second year in a row,
Tristan Prettyman has won the 2005 San Diego Music Award for "Best Acoustic."
The award ceremony was held last night at Humphrey's by the Bay in San
Diego.
The August 2, 2005 release of t w e n t
y t h r e e, the Virgin Records debut of San Diego singer/songwriter Tristan
Prettyman, heralds the arrival of an expressive new voice: emotionally
vivid but unforced; natural but unforgettable; simple but undeniably complete.
The genuine joy of the lead single, "Love, Love, Love," is a perfect summertime
acoustic tonic -- and audible evidence of the honest way this 23-year-old
former surfer came by her music, and this album.
Catch her on the road with The John Butler
Trio in these cities:
14-Sep Minneapolis, MN Fine Line
15-Sep Madison, WI Barrymore Theater

Relient
K is Gold |
Capitol reports: "Mmhmm," the current hit
album from Gotee/Capitol recording artists Relient K, has been certified
gold by the RIAA for U.S. sales in excess of 500,000 units. The certification
marks the band's second gold album, following this spring's RIAA sales
award presentation for 2003's "Two Lefts Don't Make a Right...But Three
Do."
The announcement coincides with news that
the Canton, Ohio-based band will embark on a Fall American tour with co-headliners
MXPX beginning in early October. The tour follows the band's appearance
as a main stage act on this year's just completed installment of the celebrated
Vans Warped Tour. Released last November, the Top 15 "Mmhmm" has proven
to be Relient K's most successful outing to date, reaping unanimous critical
commendations and the fastest sales of the band's career. Fuelled by non-stop
road work - including last spring's arena/amphitheater tour alongside Good
Charlotte and Simple Plan - the band's fourth album recently made a return
to the top half of the Billboard 200. [see full story for more]-
