Court
Backs Beasties |
AP reports: The Beastie Boys might have to
fight for their right to party, but they won't have to defend themselves
against claims they stole part of a jazz flutist's recording.
Without comment Monday, the Supreme Court
let stand a lower court ruling against jazz artist James W. Newton. Newton
contended that the punk rappers' 1992 song "Pass the Mic" included a sample
from his musical composition "Choir" without his full permission.
The Beastie Boys paid a licensing fee for
the six-second, three-note segment of Newton's work but failed to pay an
additional fee to license the underlying composition. [see full story for

NBC
Dropped The Ball |
BW&BK reports: It was reported last week
that NIGHT RANGER were scheduled to appear on NBC's new program, Hit Me
Baby, One More Time, but had since pulled out of the program....guitarist
Jeff Watson... has issued a detailed reply on the situation and told MelodicRock.com....
Night Ranger was slated to appear on Hit Me Baby One More Time on NBC,
and we had already interrupted our recording schedule to record and turn
in to NBC the edited TV track of Sister Christian'. We also spent an entire
day filming interviews and background video material to be used on the
show. What precluded us from being able to do the show at that time was
that, as you know, the bands need to pick a second recent hit song by someone
else to perform and we were without a second song. We chose and re-chose,
and submitted and resubmitted 7 to 10 songs to perform (from a list and
guideline of songs provided us) that NBC couldn't get cleared to use. (all
songs have to be cleared for use on Television, Film, etc.,. by the composer
and publisher). [see full story for the full statement]-

Def
Lep Injury |
KNAC reports: [San Bernardino Stadium... Sunday
6-6-5. Def Leppard / Bryan Adams Tour - report from Roadie.net] A stagehand
was taken to the hospital after being crushed by the upstage section of
roof when collapsed as a result of pre-mature removal of the cross-bracing.
It was this cross bracing that held the roof to the stage. 4 other stagehands,
who were also under the structure managed to escape without injury. This
was a completely avoidable tragedy. The out was ahead of schedule, and
there was no need to rush (certainly not to the point of being dangerous).
