Day in Pop Report for 05/07/2015
In an @ post to Tomlinson, he wrote, "remember when you had a life and stopped making bitchy comments about mine ?" In this day and age, it's not unheard of for such a comment to be deleted shortly afterward (though not before it was screenshotted by hundreds of fans), but Malik's sticking to his guns--it's still there. But why? Well, Naughty Boy, with whom Malik's been working for his solo career, posted a photo of the pair today with the caption "replace this." Here's how Tomlinson replied. "Remember when you were 12 and you used to think those Mac filters for your pictures were cool haha ! Some people still do HA!- Louis Tomlinson (@Louis_Tomlinson) May 06, 2015" Read more here.
Now, Hot New Hip-Hop points out that Thug has issued an Instagram response, saying: "So you used to be a Crip and now you're a Blood, so I don't want no smoke with you, you got bloods and crips on your team. And you was a male stripper once before, so I don't want to fight you, don't want no germs from you p-y n-a. "And you know I'm in L.A. more than Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he the governor, f-k n-a!" He then pans to the back seat where a friend is holding a pistol. And while The Game could easily criticize Thug's knowledge of local politics (Schwarzenegger hasn't been the Governator for years), he instead chooses to just respond with more threats (and a lot of profanity) about Thug's finger nail polish and tendency to call his friend's "bae." This beef doesn't appear to be cooling off any time soon. Check out the exchanges here.
Who is her hero you ask? Well, none other than George Michael. Yes, Adele dressed as the British singer during his "Faith" days for birthday. We're talking leather jacket, aviators and that five o'clock shadow, which looked pretty real on Adele. She ended her tweet with the hashtag #gottahavefaith, which is a pretty enlightening message. Could this mean Adele's follow-up to 2011's 21 is nearly done and ready to drop? Of course, we'll have to wait and see since Adele has never been one to over-share. But, it is a positive sign, since this teasing hashtag comes three months after Adele's 25 somehow found its way onto Italy's Amazon. The pre-sale listing for a deluxe edition of a new Adele album has since been taken down. But, maybe it will be up there for real soon? See Adele as you've never seen her before here.
Brown passed away in his Bahamas home on Wednesday after battling liver cancer, according to the BBC. "Errol Brown MBE passed away in The Bahamas this morning with his wife Ginette and daughters Colette and Leonie by his side of liver cancer," reads a statement delivered by Brown's manager Phil Dale. "Errol was a lover of life and obviously 'music!' I never went into his home, car or a hotel room without music playing," he continued. "Errol was a 'Gentle Man' and was a personal friend of mine who will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him." Read more here.
In the video, the pop star is interviewed while she makes a Frito pie, with co-host Bryan Safi serving up plenty of meat for her to riff on. Highlights include Carey almost losing her straight face when she breaks from cooking to fix her hair, and the revelation that Frito Pie is actually just a bunch of chips covered in lettuce and M&Ms. The M&Ms aren't just for show. Pay close attention to catch the not-so-subtle diss directed at rapper Eminem, with whom she has a checkered past and long-running beef. Check out the clip here.
"Not only am I a Swift fan, I put her in her first video," the actor best known for playing George Costanza told cameras. "It wasn't her video. It was a Brad Paisley video." The video in question? "Online," released in 2007 from Paisley's 5th Gear album, which Alexander directed. Swift indeed appears in the clip--as a backup dancer, along with fellow country singer Kellie Pickler. "Yeah, it's all me," he said, taking credit for Swift's discovery. Read more here.
Lady Gaga took to her Instagram to share her moment with Justin Bieber. Wonder what the two talked about? Totally #popstarproblems. "He really has a sweetness to him," Gaga captioned the photo of her with Bieber. "He grew up in front of the whole world. I reminded him to not get bothered. Because at the end of the day. He's the boss, and life isn't always Roses. Lots of thorns." Bieber's response, on Twitter, was short and sweet. "@ladygaga thank u for the kindness- Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) May 06, 2015." See the tweets here.
While Mr. Mahone isn't featured on the track, he is all over the video with Ms. G, and they do in fact display what appears to be love throughout the clip. Just a few days ago, Mahone gave an interview where he called Becky his first "real" girlfriend. Of course, that didn't sit well with Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony, who dated Mahone previously. 'My dad taught me to live off the land," Lambert told Country Living. "I now have my own garden, but Blake is really the gardener. This year, we're planting tomatoes and strawberries to make jam. I have a little downtime this summer, so I'm looking forward to this task [of making jam]." In the issue she also discussed on the 7 Essentials For Good Country Living. Lambert said having a home that's inviting and relaxing are key to good country living. "When you visit someone in the country, they better offer you a glass of iced tea--in a Mason jar, of course. It's cliche because it's true," she admitted. "Some of my best conversations have happened over the clink-clink of iced tea in a jar. It's the soundtrack of country life." Read more here.
The film, which centers around adults instead of high school students and was loosely inspired by Mean Girls, has enlisted Jennifer Aniston. While it's not yet known which role she's playing, it wouldn't be surprising if Aniston played the outsider lead--she has the same down-to-earth quality Lohan brought to the film at the time. According to the synopsis, the plot line consists of 'A happily married mother of two" who "moves from small town America to the high class suburbs and is faced with confronting the cutthroat world of competitive parenting." Mean Moms also follows in the footsteps of Mean Girls as it's based on a series of books written by Rosalind Wisemen, as Consequence of Sound points out, including 2006 book Queen Bee Moms And King Pin Dads: Dealing With The Parents, Teachers, Coaches, And Counselors Who Can Make -- or Break -- Your Child's Future. See who else will be in the film here.
Today, the two-day festival announced its lineup and there's no shortage of pleasant surprises. For one, the headliners are two notoriously elusive artists: Morrissey and Frank Ocean. It's almost equally impressive that the festival locked down both artists when Morrissey only ended up playing a handful of dates last year after repeatedly canceling shows and Ocean has been a shut-in since he released his beloved 2013 Channel Orange. Outside of those exciting artists, the festival also tapped D'Angelo and the Vanguard, FKA Twigs, Solange, Jesus & Mary Chain, Belle & Sebastian, Run the Jewels and more. See the full lineup here.
The track opens with an unnamed female vocalist dramatically singing the opening lines before the slow-burning beat drops with horns, finger-snaps and old fashioned pianos. Sure to be a slow-dance favorite, the sultry tempo is hardly what one would expect from an EDM superstar. Given Avicii's track record of changing the game by challenging dance music fans with the unpredictable ("Hey Brother," "Wake Me Up"), don't be surprised if other artists eventually follow suit. There is still no word on when Avicii will release that second album, but if this Nina Simone cover is any indication, fans should expect the unexpected. Check out the track here.
Wayne has been kicking around skate parks for the last few years, and we've seen plenty of videos of him attempting rudimentary ollies, but never something like this. In the video, the rapper cruises around a skate park at top speed, landing kick flips and grinding rails. He hits jumps and slides the board along edges. He's no Tony Hawk yet, but he's clearly progresses a long way since his early days. We even see him hit an intimidating five stair outside, to cheers from his entourage. "Do a trick over some stairs, land on solid ground," he raps immediately after landing. Read more here.
Original director Steven Soderbergh is not on board this time. Instead it's Gregory Jacobs, who's been a creative partner of Soderbergh's for decades, including on all the Oceans movies. Back in the starring role, of course, is Channing Tatum, who also cowrote the film (as he did the original Magic Mike). He's joined by a cast that includes Amber Heard, Elizabeth Banks, Joe Manganiello, Jada Pinkett Smith, Donald Glover and Andi McDowell. You may not care that the movie even has a plot, so we'll keep it brief and just say it involves getting the gang of male strippers (the Kings of Tampa) back together for a road trip to Myrtle Beach to perform at a convention. Watch it here.
The show, hosted by Hoda Kotb of the Today Show, also included on-stage interviews with Billy Corgan, Tanishe, Rae Sremmurd, Metric and Mick Jones of Foreigner. Florida Georgia Line took the stage at around 5:30 p.m. ET and started their set with "Anything Goes," their album's title track. It visibly took them a moment to adjust to playing to such a small room, as they haven't been out of stadium-sizes in a minute. When their guitarist and bassist, who are used to much bigger stages, wanted to do a solo and rock out, respectively, it became a little overwhelming. Brian Kelly solved the problem by ditching his guitar for the next two songs, taking a moment after the firs to flicks his pick into the very female audience and illicit squeals. The guys rounded our their set by playing their current single, "Sippin' on Fire," and their massive summer jam, "Cruise." By the time they finished, both Kelly and Tyler Hubbard were sweating, proving they were doing all they could in the air-conditioned venue to work it hard for the audience of under a thousand lucky people. Kid Rock and his band of 12 players took the stage next, for a quick two-song set. He broke out his 2010 cover of "Born Free" and "All Summer Long," his tribute to "Sweet Home Alabama." Rock is a masterful entertainer who manages to captivate the room, even working to this much smaller crowd. We earn his seal of approval, a thumbs up, during "All Summer Long" by singing the chorus to his approval, although the ladies are the stars he notes when he asks, "Are y'all trying to steal the high part from me?" The crown jewel of EDC events that happen around the world, Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas is set for the weekend of June 19-21 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In customary fashion, the festival sold out well before the lineup was announced. 'I am always listening to the fans," Insomniac CEO Pasquale Rotella told Radio.com last year. 'I'm always interacting with the fans. I used to do it as a street promoter. I used to stand outside of events for 10 hours and talk to people about the show I had coming up, answer their questions about things they were curious about." Read more here.
Wednesday on Twitter, the place where Cher currently thrives, the pop icon answered one fan's burning question: "how was meeting Kim?" Cher not only answered that question with some surprising words, depending on your perception of the reality TV star, she also spoke on meeting her husband. "She was very Gracious," Cher wrote. "We talked about our trips to Armenia." When she met Kanye, however, the pair bonded over music. West, who championed the use of Auto-Tune with his seminal 2008 album 808s & Heartbreak, thanked Cher for pioneering the sound effect with her 1998 comeback single "Believe." '"Kanye Thanked me for Autotune," she continued. "They were sweet,& seemed 2 be having fun." See the tweets here.
Rihanna's dress was a custom couture piece, sewn by one woman over the past year, that will not be available in stores, so Kimmel found a way to manufacture it for popular consumption, jokingly. "From the makers of the Snuggie and the Sham Wow comes the Rihanket," a voiceover says, advertising a yellow sheet with red designs similar to Rihanna's gown. It hosts over 1,000 uses, as a dress, coat, blanket, tent, mop, duster, stroller, safety device, a chuppah, parachute and more. Check out the video here.
It's a long shot, especially on a TV show, for an artist. While his troubadour act charms most of the cast, one guy named Justin doesn't know who he is. "You have potential, you do. I just wouldn't quit your day job yet," the character says. This leads to a running joke for the full hour-long episode about him not knowing who Ed Sheeran is that leads to a running joke where everyone hits Justin all night because Sheeran tweeted that his followers should "give him a smack for me." The show closes with Sheeran doing an acoustic cover of Britney Spears' "'Baby One More Time" while accompanied by Victoria Justice and, at some point, plants a big wet one on Justin. Read more here.
The day we wrote "Stay At Home Soldier" was one I will never forget. It was myself, Billy Dawson, Chad Raymon, and Rob Bironas. Myself and the 3 boys met in the upstairs studio loft at Chad's ranch. Rob played football for the Tennessee Titan's but had a furious passion for songwriting and got us all together to write this song. We weren't sure the exact angle we were taking at first, but we began talking about the state of our nation, our friends in the military and how we honor them, but often forget about their families. We forget that it's just as hard to stay behind as it is to leave. Billy started riffing on the guitar and I started creating melody and line by line the song came in sequential order. When we found our hook, we knew we had something special. We had found something that needed to be discussed. I want to see this country soar again, I think we all do. And as writers we think that starts by honoring those who have given up EVERYTHING for it, learning why they made that decision, and thanking them for being the fabric of our nation. I say this often, but as songwriters we can't always write a big check to issues that matter. We can't always be there on the front lines to help, and we can't bring someone's loved one back to them. But what we can do is write a song. Whether it's to help them heal, help them understand, or to roll down the windows, feel the breeze and feel alive that is our job. And that's why we felt this was a song that needed to be written. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you watch the video here and you can get the single right here!
