Day in Pop Report for 03/27/2015
As seen in a fan shot video, Style breaks down crying on-stage. With his head in his hands, Styles walked out in tears. As the BBC noted, it's unclear whether he was crying over the loss of Zayn or because fans were screaming his name in support. Though not shown in the video, it's been reported that Liam Payne walked over to console him. The other boys in the band did take to Twitter to react to Zayn's departure, varying from sadness from Louis Tomlinson to love from Styles to denial from Payne, who previously joked about Zayne leaving earlier this week. See the tweets and watch the video here.
Maybe most interesting is number six: Taylor Swift. Yes, the country-turned-pop icon is the highest ranking female leader in the world according to Fortune, and they have a convincing argument as for why. "Pop's savviest star has crossed swords with Spotify, embraced corporate sponsorship, and moved to secure dozens of trademarks (including phrases like 'This sick beat" )," Fortune argues, "And she's done it without resorting to dumbed-down salacious gimmickry." Musgraves sings the verses on the breezy track before Wilson enters on the chorus. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Wilson raved about the country singer. "When it's good it's good, when it's not--do it again. But after three tries, Kacey nailed it," he said. "I like the way she just slides over the notes--she has a very cool sound." Check out the duet here.
Crash Test Dummies Brad Roberts explains what inspired the "'Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" from their 1993 hit, "the humming chorus came about from a time on the beach humming at all the girls as they walked by". Marc Mysterio tells us that played a part in the new video, "We wanted to incorporate the inspiration of the original song in to our new video and since it was filmed in Europe some girl briefly threw her top off and we decided to keep it in the video." Watch the video here.
The clip is a different world from the visuals the band shared for "Where the Sky Hangs," where two children lay in storybook-like grass while gazing up into the sky, and the premiere of "Lifted Up," which featured a melancholy child turned away from his family's dinner table. Both tracks appear on Passion Pit's next album Kindred, which follows up their 2012 breakout full-length Gossamer. Their third album drops April 21 on Columbia. Watch the video here.
Jepsen will join Michael Keaton, who will host the episode. It'll be Jepsen's first appearance on the show. She'll be promoting a new album, her third, expected sometime this year but has not been formally announced. Additionally, Mumford & Sons will show up the next week (April 11) for their second go-round as a musical guest on the show as the British rockers (formerly, it seems, folk rockers) play tracks off their upcoming Wilder Mind, out in May. And, while the band has yet to breakthrough on some mainstream levels, they just received a pretty huge endorsement from David Cameron, British Prime Minister. In an interview with Attitude (via NME), Cameron noted, '[My wife] Samantha got me listening to a new thing called The War On Drugs. I can recommend it. They're a band. You can find them on Spotify or iTunes. Anyway, they're good!" Read more here.
And Moore appreciates them, which he showcased at a recent show in Mississippi, when we singled out a couple of fans that had made a sign for the country singer that included an ultrasound picture and the words, 'Baby's first concert ' Priceless!" (via Taste of Country) "We want everyone who comes to the Certified Platinum tour leaving feeling like they got their money's worth," Moore said, pulling cash money out of his wallet and giving the expecting couple, Katherine and Chris, $125 to reimburse ticket costs and $20 for parking. Luckily, it seems like the only casualty was the floorboards on the dock. Afterwards Tiesto posted a picture of a smiling David Guetta standing in front of the remains of his dock with the caption "#whoops we crashed our boat into @davidguetta's dock in Miami #wmc2015." Garrix posted a video of the incident too, which Guetta reposted with the caption, "I can't believe @martingarrix , @tiesto and @davegrutman just destroyed my dock!!!!" Check out the photo here.
What is carpool karaoke, you ask? Well, it's when you pick someone up to join you on your ride to work, but all they do is sing. It's the best way to deal with Los Angeles traffic, according to Corden. Probably even better when you have Mariah as your co-pilot. Because Corden doesn't know how to change the radio in his Range Rover, so he says, Mariah's "Always Be My Baby" comes on and the two can't help but join in. It's like Mariah in surround sound. Soon they're performing "Fantasy," with Corden taking on Ol' Dirty Bastard's part. His dance moves are really what make this even better. And he's not so bad at hitting some of those high notes, by the way. Mariah's English accent isn't so bad either. Corden's New York accent needs some work though. Check out the video of the two getting their sing on here.
After Zayn's breakup with his bandmates, One Direction reportedly saw a whopping 769 percent increase in streams on Spotify. Plus, global streams more than quadrupled. The cure for One Direction blues? Apparently more One Direction. Seriously, even Spotify called the phenomenon a "spike of sadness" saying in a statement "Looking at One Direction's streams in the U.S. on Spotify yesterday, we can clearly see the 'spike of sadness' happening around 5 p.m.-6 p.m. (ET)." "One Direction are one of the biggest bands in the world, with over 1.4 billion streams on Spotify," Spotify's head of label relations for Europe, Kevin Brown, said in a statement. "Looking at One Direction's streams in the U.S. on Spotify yesterday, we can clearly see the 'spike of sadness' happening around 5 p.m.-6 p.m. (ET), when their millions of fans paid tribute to Zayn by listening to One Direction's music together all over the world." What does one expect to find when they walk onto a hip hop artist's tour bus? Bottles? Women? Weapons? I think we'd all unanimously agree from the images we've seen in the media that these ingredients are a pretty standard recipe for a hip hop artist. So it's no surprise that I found myself chuckling one night on tour when I walked onto our bus and I saw bottles - baby bottles, I saw women - our wives, and the weapons of our choice were books. I have moments when I'm reminded that what I find normal is incredibly strange for some folks. For the last 10 years I've found that the way that I live, think and believe often collapses the perceived expectations of a young black hip hop artist. And I must say that I love it! I wanted to make an anthem for those who get strange looks for good reasons. Not vain or arrogant reasons, but reasons that come from being changed by God. "Sideways" celebrates the long stares, the confused faces and the head tilts because it's affirmation for us, that we are exactly where we need to be. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the album right here!
