Day in Pop Report for 03/25/2015
Along with the photo Payne wrote, "#makinglightofasituation sorry for the laughs guys." And he would definitely be sorry. That tweet led to another tweet, this one from one of Ariana Grande's fans--yes, somehow the Arianators got involved in this--asking Payne if he was depressed knowing "that Justin Bieber will always be more successful" than him. Payne decided to have a little fun with his response, tweeting, "How many times have I been arrested?" Oh, no you didn't Liam! Poking fun at the Biebz's arrest record is definitely a good way to get the Belieber's after you. And then saying the Beliebers can't take a joke, also not a good idea. Immediately Justin's fans started sending their rathe vicious responses. Read more here.
Marvin Gaye's 'Got To Give It Up," the song that "Blurred Lines" (arguably) rips off saw its download sales increase 246%, with 10,000 downloads last week alone. That was enough to achieve a ranking of No. 18 on the R&B Digital Songs chart. As for album sales, Gaye's greatest hits collection, Number 1's, moved 4,000 copies last week to suddenly appear on the Billboard 200 out of nowhere, ranking 175 on the chart. Read more here.
Afterward, Quan allegedly punched him in the face and then fled the scene on a speedboat. According to a report from local station WSVN 7 News, Quan tried to use a rear VIP entrance to the club. Security guard Christian Cajigas denied them entrance, saying the club was full. Joshua Hertz, lawyer for the security guard, claims that Quan wanted treatment deserving of his celebrity: "[He] thought that he was above the law, that he's not the average person and he could get in any way he wanted to," Hertz said. Cajigas sustained injuries to the face, and may have a broken nose. According to police, Quan and his entourage crossed the street to a speedboat parked at the dock and sped away. Read more here.
And with the rapper's previous LP debuting at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, expectations of a commercial and artistic continuation of what Sweatshirt has begun are present, both from the rapper and the label. And this might be the reason why the 21-year-old Odd Future member is so angry about the label's botching of the release, because he expected them to be treating the release like it was a big deal. An interview with NPR has confirmed as much. "Brah, I was devastated," Sweatshirt said of the release, which was supposed to begin with just the video for "Grief" being shared, but rather saw everything except the video getting released last week. "I was ready to like kill some--the day I was--it would've been so quiet for any n-- from Sony. I was so mad cause it was like--especially because I feel like this is my first album. This is the first thing that I've said that I fully stand behind, like the good and the bad of it. Because it's just--I've never been this transparent with myself or with music. I've never been behind myself this much. So for them to not treat as importantly as I was treating it was just like--I couldn't help but to feel a little disrespected, you know?" Read more here.
Other artists to be honored include the lead singer of the Manhattans Gerald Alston, Chuck Jackson, Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes and the Fantastic Shakers. Additionally, Jay Spell, known for performing with Ronnie Milsap and Jimmy Buffett, R&B singer Nappy Brown and gospel singer Rev. F.C. Barnes will be honored posthumously. Read more here.
This latest release contains no features but does boast production from Purps, Honorable C-Note, and hit machine Mike Will Made It. The latter's contribution is the tape's highlight: "Play Too Much," features a towering combination of stomping horns and distant, twinkling synths. For his part, Gucci Mane shows his gift for lighthearted wordplay: "I eat M&Ms for breakfast and I ate too much," he boasts. "$20,000 in the club, you know I play too much." He also brags that he's got his girl "eating crab cakes," which is very nice of him. At this point Gucci Mane is well into the high triple digits of songs released since his incarceration, and he's not slowing down any time soon. Check out a stream here.
Four years in the making, creator Paul "OtaKing" Johnson says he worked on it on weekends, inspired by Lucasarts' 1994 TIE Fighter game. How is Johnson able to post this sort of thing, using Star Wars imagery and trademarks? Well, Lucasfilm has long encouraged fans to create non-canon short films within the far, far away Star Wars universe. The earliest example of this is the Star Wars/COPS parody, Troops. In fact, there are official awards for fan-created films, although there are some pretty hard-and-fast rules including "Avoid bad language, rude gestures, and other inappropriate stuff," "5 minutes max!" and, of course, "Please do not include any references to Star Trek." Watch several fan-created films via TheForce.net here.
Adding a little extra to the Ariel Rechstaid-produced song's first performance, the Killers frontman chose to do most of it in black and white, which gave it a bit of a timeless feel. Not to mention the addition of two female backup singers, who help make it a perfect '80s jam. While the song may seem a little different than his others, Flowers says that's the point. He admits his new solo album, The Desired Effect, out May 18, will definitely give fans the unexpected: 'People are going to interpret it how they will, but there's only a little bit of Vegas in there." Watch Flowers' performance of "Can't Deny My Love" here.
A fan of Parton's, Blackwell shared with the singer his love for artists like George Jones and Tammy Wynette. As it turns out, Parton agreed with many of his choices. "I love George Jones. I just think he was the greatest singer ever," Parton said. While visiting with Blackwell, Parton sang some of her hits like "Coat of Many Colors," "Islands In the Stream," "Jolene" and "9 to 5″ while urging him to sing along. Parton was so impressed with their duet she nicknamed him Gage Rogers. "That's better than Kenny!" she said. Blackwell had so much fun with his visit, he even gushed on Facebook that he wants to marry Dolly. Read more and watch video here.
He mentioned that his new album will be called Traps Open, and when pressed for an explanation of the title's meaning, the rapper explained that the album will be "unapologetically gangsta" and boast a "trap sound." Can't argue with that, especially from a guy whose Trap Muzik mixtapes in the early 2000s are credited with first popularizing the term "trap." Read more here.
Wilco, Axwell & Ingrosso, D'Angelo, St. Vincent are also coming along for the ride, with smaller acts like Alvvays, First Aid Kit and Broods filling out the rest of the lineup. To commemorate the announcement of this year's lineup, Outside Lands collaborated with Funny or Die for a lineup video announcement, much like in 2014. See the full lineup here.
The Verge called the rap star's company's purchase of Swedish streaming company Aspiro, which controls TIDAL and WiMP, his attempt to "take on" Spotify. Of the two, only TIDAL is available in the U.S. and U.K. currently, offering streams in a higher quality format than Spotify and other streaming services, but the monthly subscription fee is also twice as much. A little more than two years later, she returns with Piece By Piece, and songs for the dumped are not "top of mind" for her these days. She's happily married, is a very proud mom, and is stepmom to her husband's two children from a prior relationship. No longer the jilted girl, today she's a family woman. Everyone's happy to see her be happy; but how would that affect her music? Even she wondered about that a bit. "I thought I wouldn't be as exciting, I guess," she tells Radio.com. "But it's gone the opposite way: I feel far more passionate and open and vulnerable and willing to do more things." The first single, "Heartbeat Song," is a pretty rocking declaration that a breakup does not, in fact, signal the end of the world. Or even the end of your dating life. Radio.com spoke to the singer during her whirlwind press tour about the album, as well as the joys of recording whilst pregnant, her film debut (yep, From Justin To Kelly) and her Broadway aspirations. Read the interview here.
Azalea also let slip in the quick-fire interview that her favorite curse word is the f-bomb, favorite music video that's not her own is Outkast's "B.o.B." and that she'd like to do a duet with Dolly Parton-so watch out for a stirring remake of "Island in the Stream." And giving you a look at how long ago this sausage was made, Azalea proclaims Twitter the most important website in her opinion. Oops, guess she changed her mind. Watch the video for a peek into Azalea's really stunning Hollywood Hills home, the oh-so-fancy cars in her driveway, her home studio and her "little bad dogs" here.
