Day in Pop Report for 03/18/2015
Robert Durst made headlines this week when he was arrested in Louisiana on a first-degree murder warrant from Los Angeles for the alleged murder of his friend Susan Berman in 2000. The news captured more attention due to the recent airing of the final episode of the HBO documentary series "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst" which appeared to include a confession from Durst while he was talking to himself and not aware his microphone was still on. On Tuesday, the Associated Press published a story about Durst facing weapons charges in Louisiana and they reported "an arrest warrant was issued for the former Limp Bizkit frontman". The AP recognized the error and released the following correction, "The Associated Press reported erroneously that Robert Durst is a member of a band. He is a real estate heir; Fred Durst is the former frontman of Limp Bizkit." Durst is still a member of Limp Bizkit who is still an active band.
And while we await the sales totals that are expected to be huge for the album, Spotify already has some stream figures to share, and they are also impressive. According to the music service, 9.6 million streams of To Pimp a Butterfly occurred on its first day of streaming, more than any other album has on a single day in Spotify history. Read more here.
"Cancel Kanye West's headline slot and get a rock band," its title demands, adding soon after that the rapper is an "insult to music fans all over the world." "Kanye has been very outspoken on his views on music'" he wrote. "He should listen to his own advice and pass his headline slot on to someone deserving! "Lets [sic] prevent this musical injustice now!" Read more here.
The Pinkprint Summer Tour is set to feature support performances from her rumored boyfriend Meek Mill, as well as Rae Sremmurd, Tinashe and Dej Loaf. Minaj told fans when announcing the dates on Twitter that a few more dates are still to be added. The 34-year-old also revealed she is working on new music, "Right now I'm starting a record and I'm getting into a lot of other fun things, fashion will always be a part of who I am, it's literally like if I'm not wearing a good outfit I can't sing a good song." She continued, "I have a recording studio in my house so I can be around my babies as well and they might try and sing over me, they won't be my background vocalists, they'll be like 'AHHH,' they'll be upfront and personal." "There were moments where I was like, 'Justin's going to cry in the car,'" he said. "There's no way he's not going to cry." Hart said he knew this was the case by looking at his face, which was both laughing at the burns, but also crying a little inside. "I kept pointing at him like, 'You better hold it back boy!'" Hart explained, noting a knee slap that may have been covering up one lonely tear that managed to squeak through. But, Hart did say Bieber was a good sport and did fess up to his childish ways. Apparently he's ready to grow up. And more importantly, Martha Stewart is very funny. Who knew? Read more here.
Promoting the fifth season of the HBO institution and featuring samples from the series' fourth season, the release is available as a free download right now. Among the artists recruited for the free release are rappers Method Man, Snoop Dogg and Talib Kweli, heavy rockers Killswitch Engage and Mastodon, and singers Ty Dolla $ign and Estelle. Track names go from hyper-literal (Snoop Dogg's "Lannister's Anthem," Mastodon's "White Walker") to the thematic interpretations (MNDR's "Run for Cover"). Check out the tracklist and download links here.
Ludacris' confident, motor-mouthed wordplay hasn't lost any luster over the years--"Six 15's candy-coated riding clean/ Everytime I pull out a new whip cause a scene," he raps on the chorus. "Strollin' through my hood I told 'em pimpin' ain't that easy / So whatever you need lil buddy come and see me," he adds elsewhere. The beat comes courtesy of Mike Will Made It, who updates classic low-riding Southern production with pointillistic, otherworldly synth sparkles. Big K.R.I.T. also joins him on the track. The two rappers effortlessly trade bars, with a clear natural chemistry. Listen here.
The production companies behind the film are reportedly considering a $15 million libel suit against the rapper. In an interview with the LA Times, co-executive producer Mark Berry explained how the film got off the ground. He said it happened with Drake's signature on a 2009 contract that promised the rapper a $15,000 cash fee and a 15 percent profit royalty, which hardly compare to his take-home income today. But Berry claimed that Serious Entertainment, the promoters of the concert, approached Drizzy and his label Cash Money more than once to see if he wanted to buy the footage--and he declined. The figurine is almost the most recent rendering of Macca since it was made just last year when he was filming his "Hope for the Future" music video. While on set, McCartney has to have a full body scan to appear as a hologram. That 3D scan is now the blueprint for McCartney's latest figurine. "One of the technologies we've been excited by in recent years is 3D printing, named by some as the 'Third Industrial Revolution'," says a press statement on the figurine. "The thinking here is that in the coming years we will all begin to see 3D printed objects appearing in our daily lives creating items such as machine parts, bone and limb replacements, clothing and even food. It is no overstatement to say the possibilities are pretty much endless!" Read more here.
The new album "I Don't Like S-t I Don't Go Outside: An Album By Earl Sweatshirt" will be out next Tuesday, and if you pre-order it, you'll get an instant download of one of the new songs, "Grief." "Grief" is kind of what the MC is giving his record label on Twitter. apparently he's not totally happy about this new development. SOMEONE GOTS 2 PAY 4 THEIR MISTAKES ! #SWEAT" and "ITS TRASH TO HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMEONE ELSE'S ERRORS, I AM F-KING HOT," and so forth. Watch the video the new video here.

Khalifa was summoned to a game of Catchphrase along with Miles Teller and Jim Persons, and played surprisingly well, until he couldn't name Swift's hit. When Teller leads with, "It's a Taylor Swift song," Wiz's jaw completely dropped. The Whiplash star fed him cues like "The last word's not on but" but Wiz, who guessed off, still couldn't figure it out. Fallon said, "Just name 10 Taylor Swift songs," and Khalifa gave the greatest shrug since Kanye's infamous one at the 2009 VMAs. Read more here.
But, Boots on the Beach is the latest in country music's attempts to change this image, now with an event in Jamaica that functions as much a re-imagining of what a country concert can be as it is a full-on getaway. Headlining the event will be Jerrod Niemann, Chris Young, and Tyler Farr will headline the event, held from May 22-25 of this year, better known as Memorial Day Weekend. Sandals Resorts will host the event in Ocho Rios, and while all guests will receive access to acoustic sessions with the artists and pool parties, booking through Funjet Vacations adds meet-and-greets, preferred seating, t-shirt and gift bag. See who else is playing here.
Once he ditches his suit and tie, he's headed back home for some trampoline jumping, skateboarding and a ride on a roller coaster on the Santa Monica Pier. Then it's time for a quality beach hang. What else is there to do when you quit your job? Plenty. There's water slides to find, skydiving, rock climbing and much, much more. 'Don't Look Down" is available on iTunes. Garrix's last major release was his Gold Skies EP, which dropped in July of 2014. "Don't Look Down" may or may not be on his debut full-length album. Listen to the new song here.
In 2005, Madonna was coming off of her political state-of-the-world album American Life. She was looking inward on the follow-up but also feeling her club music roots. That album, Confessions on a Dance Floor, had a big late '70s/early '80s feel to it and the first single, "Hung Up," even sampled ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)." "People don't usually think of dance music as having substance," Madonna mused. "Dance music is not usually about anything. I like the idea of revealing things about myself. The best songs do reveal certain aspects of whoever wrote that song and I like the idea of doing that with dance music, and putting those two [things] together." These days, Madonna has been revealing a bit more about herself in interviews (including one where she shared her feelings on the Catholic Church and another where she shared her thoughts on feminism). She's, of course, been promoting her latest album, Rebel Heart. Watch the video here.
