Day in Pop Report for 03/17/2015
According to a video shot from behind the stage, the man appeared to be targeting rapper El-P, who had yet to realize the stage was being invaded. His partner in Run the Jewels, Killer Mike, intercepted the stage-crasher before he could get his hands on El-P while members of the band's crew quickly intervened and rushed the man off of the stage. A second video of the incident shows members of the audience confronting the stage invader, who is knocked to the ground by one of the RTJ crew members when it looks as though he is attempting to get back onto the stage. El-P himself downplayed the incident with a humorous message on Twitter. He tweeted, "thanks to everyone who watched us rock the @Spotify house! sorry for the brief interruption.- el-p (@therealelp) March 16, 2015" Watch video of the stage-crash moment and aftermath here.
The album is not scheduled to be released until March 23rd but as we previously reported, this weekend iTunes began selling both the clean and explicit version of the album. But iTunes shut down the early release on Monday morning. Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony Tiffith took to his Twitter account to express his anger over the early release. He tweeted, "I WOULD LIKE 2 PERSONALLY THANK @Interscope FOR F***ING UP OUR RELEASE... SOMEBODY GOTS 2 PAY 4 THIS MISTAKE !!!! #TOP." He then followed up with the following tweets, "this is the kraziest s**t ever." and "i will deal with bs later.... lets focus on the album.....TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY." But it appears that the early release may have been intended as Lamar's manager and Top Dawg Entertainment President Dave Free tweeted soon after the album went on sale on iTunes: "go brazy #TPAB," and added, "yea this is real life people.. #TPAB."

Ex-wife Heather Mills had a few shots to shoot toward her ex on Ireland's The Late Late Show (via Ultimate Classic Rock), saying that most kids don't know who Paul McCartney is anymore. "If I go down the street," Mills said "all I get is kids coming up to me. Half of them don't even know who he is. That's why he's got to do songs with Rihanna and Kanye West, so people remember." Word is the Biebs himself actually instigated this event as part of a multi-pronged bid for redemption from a public weary of his juvenile antics, multiple arrests and unmitigated douchebaggery. The plan goes: run the gauntlet of a savage public beatdown as the first step toward celeb-atonement. Will it work? Could Bieber's Roast prove to be his on-ramp to career rebirth? He better hope so--while the dozens of rabid Beliebers camped outside Sony Studios in hopes of catching a glimpse of 'the King Joffrey of pop" (Jeff Ross's line) seemed unaware that Bieber Fever peaked five years ago, the vast majority of JB's original fan base have aged out of pre-pubescent heartthrob fantasies, leaving our anti-hero at a Timberlake-esque crossroads. But enough speculation about Bieber's fate. The important question is: was the Roast of Justin Bieber funny? And the answer is a resounding yes. Schadenfreude enthusiasts on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border will delight in what was probably the most consistently hilarious Comedy Central Roast to date. Masterfully hosted by minuscule MC Kevin Hart, the evening was an exhilarating barrage of brutal verbal abuse, riotous and unrelenting. And while no one on the dais emerged unscathed, the most barbaric barbs were reserved for Bieber himself. The line-up seemed odd at first (Shaq? Ludacris? The kid who started on SNL a week ago?) but the only roaster who even came close to being a dud was Chris D'Elia, who Natasha Leggero accurately described as 'if Dane Cook had half the talent and a rich father." His hacky, unnecessarily dark set got laughs but paled in comparison to the best performances of the night. D'Elia himself acknowledged he was only invited because he's Bieber's favorite comedian, which Jeff Ross later mused is 'like being Shaq's favorite poet." Check out some highlights here.
Lyrically, Gibbard is introspective, as usual, singing a long distance relationship, something with which he's very familiar. "You send a photo out your window of Paris/ Of what you wish I could see/ But someone has got to be a lighthouse/ And that someone has got to be me/ And I hope your absence makes us grow fonder/ I hope we always feel the same/ When our eyes meet past security we embrace in the baggage claim," he sings. The track follows up "No Room in Frame," "Black Sun" and "The Ghosts of Beverly Drive." Death Cab For Cutie's new album Kintsugi is out March 31. Listen to the new song here.
That video preview comes courtesy of Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, aka The Scorpion King. In a post on Instagram, Johnson revealed a snippet of his performance, a charming rendition of Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," complete with choreography. It is unclear exactly what has a bigger chance of making you smile: The Rock's dancing or LL's big goofy grin in the background while watching the whole routine. Johnson is one of the many stars in the upcoming movie, Furious 7, which opens nationwide on April 3. The movie, which is sure to do major business at the box office, also serves as an emotional tribute to late actor Paul Walker, who died during a tragic accident before the movie was completed. Check out the clip of The Rock's rendition of the Taylor Swift hit here.
"[We] just wrote a folky thing," the Cadillac Three singer explained to Radio.com of the song-a slower-paced ballad that focuses on the simple pleasures of quiet country life. So when word came that Tim McGraw was interested in cutting the song, Johnston was blown away. "They said it was going to be a single and I was like, 'Holy crap! That's crazy,'" Johnston said. But the surprises didn't stop there. The song, he was informed, would not only be a single but a duet between McGraw and his wife, Faith Hill. "[Big Machine Label Group President] Scott Borchetta said, 'You know it's going to be a duet, right?' And I was like, 'Who are they going to get?' I had no idea. He's like, 'Faith's going to sing on it.' I was like, 'Score! Touchdown!'" "Meanwhile Back at Mama's" was the second radio single from McGraw's 2014 album Sundown Heaven Town. It earned a good deal or radio airplay, and eventually reached the Top 5 on the country singles charts. Now it's been nominated for Vocal Event of the Year at the 50th Academy of Country Music Awards. McGraw has cut a variety of material in his more than two-decade-long career, but "Meanwhile Back at Mama's" stands as one of his quietest moments. Something about the homey, laid-back "Meanwhile Back at Mama's," though, struck him at his emotional core. It's a song of reflection that steps aside from our "crazy" modern world, if only for a few brief minutes. It's a reminder, too, that while country music may continue to evolve in new and different directions, sometimes it's the simplest, most familiar-sounding melody that captures the moment. "What I wouldn't give for a slow down," McGraw sings in the song, "'cause where I come from, only the horses run." "Right off the bat, it probably wasn't four bars into the songs that I knew I wanted to cut it," McGraw explains to Radio.com. "The phrasing of it, and what it said, and how it developedI knew just from the phrasing that I wanted to cut the song right away. Because you sort of had an idea of the gravity of the song." While Bryan hosted his last two concerts on March 11-12 at Spinnaker Beach Club, his wife Caroline and mom LeClaire were along for the fun--and, as it turns out the dancing, too. His two ladies got up on a platform on the stage to show where Bryan got his dance moves from as the crowd cheered along. Bryan announced his final Spring Break album and show at a press conference earlier this year. 'We've had such an amazing run down there. It has been something I look forward to year after year. Last year was just amazingly over the top. [We had] over 200,000 people on the beach," he recalled. 'We're going to end it on a big bang. It's been an amazing run. We just wanted to play some music on the beach and it's turned into albums and releasing songs online via iTunes and it's turned into physical albums. The last spring break album will be called Spring Break'Checkin' Out." Watch the video here.
