Day in Pop Report for 02/26/2015
People reports that doctors are weening Brown off the medication that keeps her in a coma, with the hope that it might help learn whether or not Brown can survive on her own. "They take them off a medically induced coma for two reasons - because the underlying problem has improved, or to simply get a sense of what the patient is able to do for themselves," Subhashini Ramesh, a professor of NeuroCritical Care at Georgia Regents University, said to People. Madonna, once again dressed as a matador for her bull-fighting take on "Living for Love" from her recent offering Rebel Heart, had a pretty intense and frightening onstage fall when some dancers pulled her cape and sent her flying backwards off a small flight of stairs. Presumably, the cape was supposed to detatch when pulled, but it didn't, and Madonna went hurling toward the ground along with the cape. Madonna kept performing despite the fall, seeing an outpouring of support on social media for her professionalism. Watch it here.
Reports are that the famed desert tree, which looks kind like a cross between a cactus and a Christmas tree, has been defaced, Via a fan, known as 'Hwy 190," on a U2 fan site, via Consequence of Sound: "This past Sunday, I made my proverbial yearly hike out to the Tree with my dog to reminisce only to find that some hack and I do mean hack, decided it was a bright idea to take a hacksaw to one of the Tree's limbs - evidently to remove an inch thick cross section as a souvenir. Are you kidding me?" Read more here.
Now, a few days before the record's scheduled release, Clarkson has shared one more. Her latest preview of the album is perhaps one of the most anticipated: The track, "Run Run Run," features John Legend. As tends to be the case when Legend is involved, the song starts out as a piano ballad. Clarkson is at her most soulful, trading lines and dueting with the R&B singer before the song hits an explosive turn with towering drums. "Our lust for fighting/ Tied up in silence," Clarkson cryptically sings. Listen to the song here.
After a rumor broke and was quickly dispelled that Shmurda would see some of his charges dropped for gun possession, it has now been confirmed that the rapper's list of offenses has indeed shrunk. However, the possession charge which got dropped stems from an arrest last June, according to Page Six. 'In light of the DA's representations, all four counts of the indictment are included in the Manhattan case," Brooklyn Judge William Miller said Tuesday. Read more here.
The Singles have hired legal counsel following the release of a single, "Candy," by Scarlett Johansson, Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris, Julia Haltigan, and Este Haim, using the same band name, "The Singles." A cease and desist demand has been issued by The Singles' lawyer to the representatives for Johansson and the new all-girl group, alleging trademark infringement and a variety of other legal claims. Founded by Vincent Frederick, The Singles have been continuously making music, recording, touring, and using the band name "The Singles" since 1999. With an extensive discography that spans nearly two decades, The Singles have produced a full repertoire of LPs, EPs, singles and tracks over the years, and have toured across the nation and internationally, playing approximately 100 shows in 2014 alone. The Singles' videos on YouTube have been viewed more than 75,000 times. The Singles' lead/frontman Frederick was surprised to hear about the release of "Candy" by Johansson and the other members of the girl group using the name "The Singles." "I woke up one morning and learned from the news that our band name was literally just taken by someone else as their own. It's hard to believe that any musician would do something like that to another band," said Frederick. "The Singles has been my life for the past 16 years. We have worked so incredibly hard to make it a success." Since "Candy" debuted on February 20, 2015, fans online and across social media have expressed surprise and confusion over the release of the song and why Scarlett Johansson, Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris, Julia Haltigan, and Este Haim released the single using the band's name, instead of picking a new band name not already in use. "I don't understand it," said Frederick. "Our band, The Singles, has an account on nearly all social media sites and our music is available in record shops, on iTunes, SoundCloud, and other websites. Just a simple search on Google would have revealed that 'The Singles' was already a band name being used by another pop/rock band - our band." The Singles' legal counsel has issued a demand to representatives for Johansson and the new all-girl group demanding that they halt using the name "The Singles," any further, and that The Singles will consider legal action if a resolution is not reached. Gaga, who seems to be transitioning into the Cher-phase of her career--first by transcending contemporary pop with her jazz standards album, then becoming the highlight of this year's Oscars, and now by venturing into acting--will be starring in the fifth edition of the show. But this is one part she was pretty much born to play. In fact, Gaga is such a good fit for the role, Vulture found fan-made YouTube videos that foreshadowed the pop star's appearance on the show. Check out one of them, a compilation of Gaga wearing horrific ensembles, here.
This past weekend (Feb. 21) at his sold-out tour date in Nashville at Bridgestone Arena, Aldean treated his audience to a two-song duet with Alabama's Randy Owen. According to Country Weekly, Aldean and Owen sang some Alabama songs including a full-band performance of "Tennessee River." Then, the band went silent as Aldean and Owen performed "My Home's in Alabama" alone on two acoustic guitars. "Are you Southern born or Southern bred?" Owen shouts at the crowd midway through the song. Watch the duet here.
If you want to order the "Ariana Grande," be prepared for a sugar rush, Complex reports. The drink first became widely known when a Buzzfeed reporter wandered into a Starbucks and ordered one out of curiosity. Their creative barista had apparently already considered what would go into it and whipped one up. Done up with a Cotton Candy Frappuccino base (i.e. Vanilla Bean and Raspberry), mocha syrup, mocha chips, whipped cream and a caramel drizzle, the drink was, for its orderer, "A disco techno circus party in my mouth." Additional performances include Gary Allan, Frankie Ballard, Mark Chesnutt, Easton Corbin, Clare Dunn, Hunter Hayes, Sam Hunt, Jana Kramer, Joe Nichols, Parmalee, Michael Ray, Thomas Rhett and Chris Young. More artists are expected to be announced within the coming weeks. In addition to the main stage, Watershed will have a second stage, the Next From Nashville stage, which will showcase emerging country acts. This stage will host the festival's Late Night set which Sam Hunt will be a part of. Read more here.
Reports from the show, via Complex, indicate that the song features up-and-comer Allan Kingdom on the hook. Quite a bit of fire involved, too. Looks like Taylor Swift was feeling it. Along with Mrs. Kanye West. And Lionel Richie. "All Day" is the newest taste of West's new album. It follows "Wolves," released during New York Fashion Week at West's Yeezys event two weeks ago, and "Only One" with Paul McCartney, plus the Rihanna collab "FourFiveSeconds." Check out the video here.
Helping him out with co-anchor duties was GRAMMY award-winning musician Erykah Badu to report some school delays. "It's hard out here for a pimp, you know," she joked. In good spirits, she added: "A lot of schools are closed. I'm trying to get to Los Angeles. I just need to wait a little longer." One of the more patient passengers, she added much color to the news coverage with her Pharrell-like hat, a "Hey mom!" shout-out on camera with a big smile. Watch it here.
Because so many of the audience members knew it, Smith didn't have to work too hard. He mostly coached them through their rendition of the track and displayed some very dad-like dance moves. But the timing of these performances comes just as Smith revealed he's gearing up for another music release of sorts. In a recent speech, Smith revealed that he's been hitting the studio with help from Kanye West and his son Jaden. 'I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet but I'm exploring," he said. 'I'm in a creative ceiling. My son tells me I have to write out the things I don't like. I can't write and stop, I have to keep going and going and write them out. I've never worked like that before but I think I might give that a shot." Watch the Ellen appearance here.
Zendaya posted a response after the incident, calling the critique 'a large stereotype [and] outrageously offensive." Since then, Rancic has publicly apologized, causing Zendaya to once again take to social media to comment on the events. "Body shaming and other tactics will never get the job doneI appreciate your apology and I'm glad it was a learning experience for you and for the network," Zendaya said, adding, "I hope that others negatively affected by her words can find it in their hearts to accept her apology as well."
