Day in Pop Report for 02/09/2015
The auto-tuned entertainer went on one of his infamous rants with E! after Beck's album "Morning Phase" won the Grammy over Beyonce's latest effort and West told E! that Beck "needs to respect artistry" and should have given his Grammy to Beyonce. The Washington Post posted the following quote from Kanye's outburst via their style blog: "I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain't gonna play with them no more. 'Flawless,' Beyonc video. And Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyonc and at this point, we tired of it. Because what happens is when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you're disrespectful to inspiration. And we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day. And they listen to that Beyonc album and they feel like it takes them to another place. Then they do this whole promotional event, that, you know, they'll run the music over somebody's speech, the artist, because they want a commercial advertising. Like no, we not playing with them no more. And by the way, I got my wife, I got my daughter, and I got my clothing line so I'm not going to do nothing to put my daughter at risk - but I am here to fight for creativity. That's the reason why I didn't say anything tonight. But y'all know what it meant when 'Ye walked on the stage." Read the full report for more details and video here.
In a recently released 911 phone call, the woman who phoned the police to report the tragic Compton incident can be heard identifying Suge Knight's hit-and-run as intentional. 'The car ran over two guys, there was fighting, and then he just pulled back and pulled forward and run 'em over," she tells the dispatcher in a call. "Two guys are laying down." The two men that have since been identified were Knight's friend Terry Carter, who was killed in the incident, and Cle Sloan. Knight is now facing charges for the murder of Carter and the attempted murder of Sloan. Read more and listen here.
In a statement released late last week (Feb. 5, via CBS Atlanta) he chose not to update the media on his daughter's condition, but to call news outlets out for inaccurate reporting. "If we issued a statement every time the media published a false report regarding this matter, that's all we would be doing 24 hours a day," he wrote. "This is false, just as is the vast majority of the other reporting that is currently taking place." here.
On a pretty spare stage, the somewhat unlikely trio performed the song with a bit more instruments than the studio version, which only features Sir Paul's acoustic guitar and keyboards. This time they added a bass player and guitarist. Will they ever hit the stage together again? Or will Paul move on to work with other younger artists (recall that last year he won a GRAMMY for "Cut Me Some Slack," his collaboration with Nirvana alum Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear). Make no mistake: though it's billed as a world tour, Paisley won't be traveling across the pond just yet. All dates are in North America, with most in the U.S. and a few in Canada. The tour is currently scheduled to travel across multiple months, with the final scheduled date Oct. 3 in West Palm Beach, Fla. Additionally, Paisley will drop by his fair share of festivals, including the FarmBorough Country Music Festival in New York and Faster Horses in Brooklyn, Mich. Paisley is touring behind new album Moonshine in the Trunk, released last August. He already embarked on a previous tour, the Country Nation World Tour, which wraps next month. See the dates here.
Employing the Loopy iPad app that he's used before (notably for a memorable performance of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" with Billy Joel last year), Fallon, with Smith's help, laid down a couple of human beat-box riffs before kicking into the Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock classic "It Takes Two," with the Fresh Prince appropriately tweaking the lyrics with the line "Me and the Roots come from the same home!" a shout-out to their mutual Philadelphia, um, roots. About a minute into the jam, the Roots joined in and Fallon and Smith left the desk and couch, with Fallon using his best high voice to sing the hook "It takes two to make things go right!" (A great effort, but maybe next time he should call Justin Timberlake when he needs a falsetto). Watch it here.
"Heart Attack" marks the second song the Atlana pair have released this week, following up "Down on That." Thug's voice is even more flexible in this take, twisting and expanding like a rubber band over a soothing Zaytoven beat that hinges on a few chord progressions and a drum line. Gucci also comes across as particularly at ease, rightfully so as he's settled in by now following his release from prison. Lyrically the pair sound very relaxed considering they're on the brink of a heart attack. "You gone give me a heart attack/ Don't slow it up baby roll it out I want a heart attack/ Gotta act just like you know you giving me a heart attack/ I ain't never ever above and back/ I just want me a heart attack," Young Thug raps. Listen to the track here.
And on the other hand, he also pointed out his skills as a top notch guitarist last night, when he jammed with the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir to close out the show with a performance of the Grateful Dead's "Althea," joined by the Dead's Bob Weir. A Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter composition from the band's 1980 album Go To Heaven (the one that saw the band decked out in all white disco-era suits, a few years too late), it was an unusual, but very Dead-like, choice. Mayer seemed content to let Weir take vocals; the host paid tribute to Garcia via his always-fluid and smooth lead guitar skills. Watch it here.
Snoop, understandably, has more than a few friends. The guest list included none other than Kendrick Lamar, Miguel, Warren G, Too $hort, Chaka Khan and, naturally, Pharrell. The latter joined the rapper on stage for a performance of a new song, "Peaches N Cream," off of their upcoming album, titled Bush. Fans captured video of the performance. Though the video quality is less than ideal, the production seems to be a combination of old-school funk influences--which Snoop has mined throughout the last decade, on songs like "Sexual Eruption"--and Pharrell's unique production style. Watch it here.
So when would Jack White think he's "made it?" 'When I have coffee with 'Weird Al' Yankovic one day, that's when I'll know," he told Klepper. "People say 'I know I've made it when 'Weird Al' covers your song.' That's not true--you have to have coffee with him." Well, fast forward one week and Jack White has officially "made it." Yankovic posted a picture of himself and White mid-coffee-cup-clink. White is so happy about the occasion he's even letting out a smile. Read more here.
It follows the release of the official music video, including DeJ Loaf, Big Sean and many more, on Jan. 23. The song--which first came out last year on Shady XV, Eminem's career retrospective with a few new songs--features the best of Detroit under one roof. That means high-octane verses from Royce Da 5'9″, Big Sean, Danny Brown, Trick Trick, Eminem himself, and a sing-song chorus from Dej Loaf. It may be a tour de force of verbal caliber and city pride, but that doesn't mean it's easy to keep up with. The lyric video allows fans to follow along with the motor-mouth artists, all of whom step up to the challenge of delivering verses as tricky and fast-paced as Eminem. Watch the video here.
As is expected when discussing Houston right now, Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who is reportedly in a coma following the discovery of her unresponsive body in a bathtub last weekend, was brought up. Related: Bobby Brown Says Reports That Bobbi Kristina is Brain Dead Are False "I love that girl," Sparks said. "I didn't get a chance to actually hang out with her and spend some time with her but every time I saw her I wanted to let her know, 'Hey, if you need anything, call me. You have a friend in me.' I've just been praying and praying and praying. I hope that she's OK and just' oh, man." Read more here.
Their song, "Immortals," from Big Hero 6, was unfortunately not selected from the "shortlist" of nearly 80 songs from films this year for a Best Song nomination. When discussing this miscarriage of show-biz justice with Radio.com, frontman Patrick Stump laughs, joking, "Our song was so obviously Oscar-worthy!" Bassist Pete Wentz qualifies the answer. "We saw the list of songs that qualified for Oscars, and that was 79 songs. But it was amazing that we were able to work on this Disney film. I would never in a million years have thought that Fall Out Boy, this punk band from the suburbs of Chicago, would be involved in a Disney/Marvel film." And working at Disney came with it's own benefits, especially if you're a animation or comic-book geek. Drummer Andy Hurley--who was otherwise pretty stoic through most of the interview--enthused, "I got to meet some of the writers from the [Big Hero 6] comic, they also do Ben 10 and other cartoons and comics. I'm a comic fan, so that was really cool." Wentz adds that they got props from a legend of animation, John Lasseter, the cofounder of Pixar and director of Toy Story and Cars, among other classics. "[He] gave us all hugs at the premiere, that's mind-blowing!" Read more here.
The singer started with a performance of "If It's Magic" from Stevie's classic Songs in the Key of Life album, joined at the end of the song by Stevie himself on harmonica. An odd choice, as there are much bigger hits (and more obvious choices) from that album, but Ush did it justice. Wonder has been celebrating that album-a double album that originally included a bonus 45-inch because two LPs wasn't enough-with a tour where he plays the album in full, each night. Radio.com was at opening night at Madison Square Garden last year. Read more here.
