Frost took the spotlight in 2007 with his critically acclaimed LP Theory of Machines. Wire Magazine called it "simply awesomethis is Arvo Prt as arranged by Trent Reznor," and the BBC's Mary Anne Hobbs called it "arresting and exquisite" including the title cut on her acclaimed Evangeline compilation. Returning the compliment, group producer/emcee, Oddisee, speaks highly of DJ Buddy and his involvement in putting the mixtape together, saying, "DJ buddy is great and in all honesty this mixtape is all him. He's an actually fan and supporter of our music and movement. The mixtape was actually DJ Buddy's idea and he presented the idea to us. We're fans of a lot of his remixes, so it was in honor to be included in his series." Each of the tracks throws the spotlight onto one of the group's members, letting them each showcase their talent, including the track "In the Jungle," which features a purely instrumental performance by Oddisee. Although a pre-album mixtape, don't let it throw you that a handful of these songs are not on the album not one of them lacks in the high quality production or deft lyrics that the group has become known for.

The album was produced by Hubbard with help from George Reiff. With a keen eye for observation and a wise man's knowledge, Ray Wylie Hubbard composes and performs a dozen songs that couldn't spring from anywhere else but out of his fertile rock and roll bluesy poet-in-the-blistering-heat southern noggin. "I like to look at both enlightenment and endarkenment," he declares. "I feel comfortable observing each." A. Enlightenment Hubbard recruits an ensemble of accomplished musicians to make the album's larger than life outlaw tunes echo from track to track. Among the musicians featured on the album are Kevin Russell (The Gourds), Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams, Robert Earl Keen), Bukka Allen (Ian Moore, Jack Ingram), Ray Bonneville (B.B. King, JJ Cale, Muddy Waters), Seth James (Percy Sledge, Delbert McClinton), David Abeyta (Reckless Kelly) and The Trishas as well as his own son, Lucas Hubbard.

The digital-only single includes remixes from Maxine Dangles, Mute label-mates A Place To Bury Strangers and Subscape. "I'm really happy with the remixes," commented James Chapman, aka Maps. "Maxime Dangles has done an amazing disco-killer of a mix, and also A Place To Bury Strangers have produced something truly special. Everything about the new record and "Die Happy, Die Smiling" is much harder, purely electronic, the way things should be."

What begins as a sketchy introduction turns into a raucous house party with a 4:1 girl to guy ratio. Scene after scene, cameras cut away to shots of cutesy party-starters threatening enough to make Cold Flamez claim, "Girl, you nasty." While emcees D-Real, his little brother Mic 3rd, and emcee/producer Dash share tales of their conquests, DJ Skee sizes them up, assessing if they're ready to join the brotherhood. Keeping in line with the song's light-hearted feel that comes from Dash's catchy bass-heavy production, the video retains a fun demeanor while maintaining the edge Skee.TV always brings to the table. If you've ever wondered what a house party in one of hip-hop's highly heralded cities would be like, Cold Flamez invites you to join their take on Revenge of the Nerds meets Animal House, complete with the energy and grit that only Eastside Long Beach could bring.
