A.N.J.A. is described as a one woman "post punk horror surf rock experiment" from Belfast. Its singer is a fiery redhead (Is there any other kind of redhead?), and the single "A-Bomb" is as explosive as its title suggests.
One writer has referred to her as Belfast's answer to Stevie Nicks, but Nicks (even under the influence of mountainous cocaine) never rocked this hard. Part sung/screamed, part spoken, this is a loud, punkish single. "Let's make history," she tells us, and we best believe her. The bass pounds, the drums thunder and the guitars jitter with ominous swagger.
The music is said to be influenced by '60s garage rock, but this particular track has early punk rock written all over it. However, the vocal is also melodic and sweet in places, which raises it above mere untrained punk. It's the kind of track that forces you to stand at attention. It's also got more energy than the best Starbucks coffee.
If, as we're told, this is an experiment, well, it's a roaring success.
