Maybe you're like me. You see the name Black Russ with to the label "doom metal" listed next to his name and you think, 'Oh no! I'm in for a whole lot of screaming noise." Don't let such assumptions stop you, though. Instead, give Metamorphosis a listen because it's so much more melodic and musical than you might expect.
Reuss is from Switzerland and describes his upbringing has having "a touch of melancholy and a certain heaviness" growing up. Released on his own label, this album is described as one that's about "transformation. The transformation of a man who is between worlds and nowhere really at home. Struggles with himself and with the world." Of course, such struggles describe most of us, at various points in our lives. Indeed, such struggles are real.
Nevertheless, Reuss faces these struggles most constructively: by creating great music. Each of these tracks feature memorable guitar riffs. "Grief," for instance, is driven by a stuttering, nearly funky metal groove. As a vocalist, Reuss also sings extremely well. Yes, his voice oftentimes sounds quite sad - as you might expect, considering the songs' subject matter. With that said, though, Reuss actually sings these songs throughout, rather than noisily scream them.
While this album is likely going to be marketed at the metal fanbase, it would be a shame if the Goth community is ignored during this publicity pursuit. Fans of acts like Sisters Of Mercy will also appreciate this music, especially tracks like "Fear," which features choir vocal portions.
Metamorphosis is an especially good album and should not be missed.
