Patrick Coman - Tree of Life

.
In opening cut "Heartbeat" singer Coman portrays a doomed man with lyrics like "Can't you hear the heartbeat of a desperate man/When he knows his time has come to an end," appropriately performed as an eerie dirge made all the more spooky by Peter Parcek's haunted house-informed guitar effects. Parcek plays lead guitar throughout and he and Coman have a ball handing out a bit of advice on the bouncy "Don't Reach," hamming it up on the Johnny Cash-like "The Judge" and grooving New Orleans-style on "Dirty Old Bedbug Blues," a trombone enhanced (Neal Pawley) cut that amusingly recalls a one night stand in a less than savory apartment in New York City. Coman's songwriting and storytelling skills shine here on this mostly self-penned set, but a cover of Leon Russell's "Magic Mirror" is also a highlight.
