Ajay Mather - Little Boat

.
There's a sophistication to Ajay Mather's music that raises it above typical expectations for Americana sounds. One titled "Grooving in Paris (All My Choices)," with its layered horn chart, also mixes in a touch of New Orleans-styled jazz. This project's title track, though, is a dreamy, moody piece colored by steel guitar. There are, therefore, sonic surprises at nearly every turn.

Things get even more inviting with "There We Are (Do It Right or Not at All)," which is - while just as dreamy as the album's title cut - also features a speedy and soulful jazz guitar solo, nearly throughout. But nothing that comes before it will prepare you for "My Wallet Is A House of Cards," which is a flat-out rocker. The guitars riff out, while Mather sings it in a gruff, nearly metal tone.

Ajay Mather proves he has many varied tools in his belt with Little Boat. It's a miracle he can fit them all on his tiny vessel. That's what makes this a musical adventure at sea, though.
