Red Tide Rising - Voices

This Denver-based hard rock/metal quartet demonstrates a fondness for the darker side of the genre here. Opening cut Writing on the Wall for example begins with an eerie, Alice in Chains-like intro that gives way to forceful, angrily-presented lyrics that recall the style of Metallica's James Hetfield; from there singer Matt Whiteman cranks it up to a full-blown growl but ultimately the song ends back with the Alice in Chains guitar sound and a melodic vocal outro. The song shows that the guys know how to meld influences into something not only original but also very memorable. Voices is just a six-song EP; it rocks hard all the way through with the (sort of) title track The Sound of Voices Screaming, again with a mix of screamed and melodic vocals and a pummeling rhythm, being a surefire pick for hard rock radio.
