Keb' Mo' - Keb' Mo' Live: That Hot Pink Blues Album
.
Keb' Mo' now has a career that spans more than two decades and this 2-CD set includes live versions of songs drawn from all points in that lengthy career. What you won't hear though is anything from covers albums Big Wide Grin and PeaceBack by Popular Demand as Keb' wisely plays only songs here that he has written or co-written. Rather than being recorded at one show, That Hot Pink Blues Album was recorded at 10 stops on the blues man's 2015 tour at venues of all types ranging from intimate clubs to festival appearances. About half the material comes from Keb's first four records; the sequencing is not chronological but the set does begin with the sublime "Tell Everybody I Know" from the Keb' Mo' self-titled debut before moving into some hot guitar picking on the electric blues of "Somebody Hurt You," a standout track from latest effort Bluesamericana. The funky strut of "She Just Wants to Dance" provides a highlight for CD1 which also includes the equally earthy "Government Cheese." Like its companion disc, CD2 starts in a mellow mood with the reflective plea to an ex-flame that is "Come on Back;" ironically the tables are turned on "France" where the song's subject is a guy who's completely under the thumb of his woman. An eight-minute-plus take on the simmering slow blues of "Dangerous Mood" is a late album highlight and even though the crowd noise is for the most part suppressed you can still tell that the biker crowd at the Sturgis, South Dakota performance was in an interesting mood themselves. Likely too that Keb' Mo' fans will have a good groove going all the way through this nice live retrospective.
