Deck has one of those scratchy singing voices that made Seger such a distinctive rock-pop star in the 70s. "17 Miles" is a rocking number that also brings to mind Rod Stewart. It's built upon the established musical values of a riffing guitar part colored by soulful organ.
The performer spent six years fronting the cow punk band Green Corn Revival, and a few of his band mates from that act help back him up on this upbeat, though reality-based, travel song. With his strong singing voice, personalized writing style (he helped write this tune, by the way) and solid musical values, Deck sounds to be a voice well worth keeping tabs on. He's more than certain to get much further than a mere 17 miles.
