J Burn - Burnt Blue

.
J Burn is an old school Americana performer based out of the Bay Area. His EP Burnt Blue is a quaint collection of songs. Some of Burn's lyrics won't ring so true to many modern ears, however. For instance, the song "Freight Train" speaks of the hopes that a freight train will take a guy far away from the girl that broke his heart. However, there aren't too many freight trains anymore, and the ones that exist are too sophisticated for hobos to simply catch and ride the rails. Getting away from heartbreak is what Burn is trying to express, though, and we can all relate to that.

Burn must be a kind of nostalgic guy because he speaks about nostalgia with "Memory Lane." He also sings of simpler times during "Old Time Heroes." "Our Song Shared," furthermore, looks back on happier times.

There are times when Burn sounds like an old time-y singer. In his more cynical moments, however, he comes off a little like David Lowery of Cracker. No matter what voice he applies, though, Burn convinces us he's both sincere and authentic.
