I Am Love - Self-titled

.
It's not every day you hear an autoharp on an alternative rock release. Then again, Philadelphia's I am Love is not your every day alternative rock band. This self-titled album goes from the all-out emotional gut-spilling of "Spew," to the finger-snapping, soul music intro of "Can I," which eventually builds up to an emotional peek.

Finding artist comparisons for I am Love can be a toughie. The singer sounds a little like a combination of James Blunt and Anthony Johnson at times, and the track "Balance" is a little like a The Smiths dirge. It rarely gets too loud, although the guitars are cranked up a bit during "Ace Of Cups." The latter forgoes the kind of gypsy-pop that precedes it for something a little angrier and bluesier.

This act is a bit of an oddball collective, yet there is something appealing about a band that strives to create art for art's sake. And with this self-titled album, they clearly succeed.
