Heart & Friends - Home for the Holidays

.
Heart's 2013 concert to welcome the holiday season begins with a beautiful reading of Joni Mitchell's "The River" that features, with minor exceptions, just Ann Wilson's voice backed by a symphony orchestra, and the crowd roars its approval when Wilson proves she can still hit the high notes.

Nancy Wilson's acoustic playing and the orchestra provide the backing for the quiet "Seasons" but then the parade of guest stars begins as Shawn Colvin comes on to sing the gentle "Rocking,"

Richard Marx adds harmony vocals on "All Through the Night" and Sammy Hagar arrives for the South Pacific-flavored "All We Need is an Island" and the countrified "Santa's Going South (For Christmas)."

But this is of course a Heart concert and the Wilson sisters know what will really jingle the audience's bells, so they go full electric and rock out on "Barracuda" and "Even it Up" before the orchestra rejoins for a cover of Led Zeppelin favorite "Stairway to Heaven."

Several other Christmas songs are performed, and in a touching moment, Nancy recites the words to her poem "On This Good Christmas Day" which she wrote just for the occasion.

The show ends with a nice take on Bob Dylan's "Ring Them Bells" with guest Pat Monahan of Train sharing lead vocal duties and with background vocals from Marx and Colvin.

Home for the Holidays was recorded in Heart's hometown, Seattle.
