This album goes just a tad outside of the box of what you might think you are going to get with Sully Erna and the boys. But at the same time, It is just old school Godsmack. Heavy and Loud with that trademark Godsmack groove. You definitely hear all of their influences on this album. And that's what's so awesome about this band. They could be just a bare boned Gibson and Marshall Amp outfit, but they have a cut to their music that has no problem gathering new minions.
This album rips into me the way their first album did back in 1998. Almost exactly the same way, But you are going to hear Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Pantera and Rush all mixed up with crushed ice and Tequila. All of their influences. And it is done fantastically. For the record, this album came out August 5th - Just a few months ago. Their third album release out of six that debut number one on the Billboard 200. That strikes me as a huge accomplishment in "today's" music industry.
The 11 new songs on this record starting with title track 100hp are all just amazing. 1000hp is a driving tune that grips you from the start and sets the tone for a masterpiece of an album. Track 2, "FML" is one those Start off slow then kick your ass songs. Track 3, Called "Something Different", probably one of the best songs Sully has ever wrote as he pours out his soul as a lyricist. Track #4, "What's Next" is a 5 star song. But it is track #5"Generation Day" that is the masterpiece on this album. This song is layered beautifully and in my opinion an Opus of a tune. It is that good.
The second half of the album features 6 more great songs like track #6, "Locked and Loaded" and the wicked intro on the track #9, "Nothing Comes Easy". I call it the way I hear it, and I hear bad ass seventies Aerosmith on that track. Henceforth.Wicked!!. The last track, "Life Is Good" will no doubt be a concert anthem on their current North American Tour. (see dates here)
Godsmack IS - Sully Erna; Lead Vocals, Guitar & Production, Tony Rombola on Lead Guitar, Robbie Merrill on Bass and Shannon Larkin killing it on the drums. This album is a must have if you are a metal fan. No doubt. Overall on the Hardcore scale I give it a 4 out 5 stars.
