Exodus - Blood In, Blood Out

One thing I find amazing is when a really great rock n roll outfit that's been around for at least 10-15 years takes a break and then comes out with new material. It goes one of two ways. They try to progress with new personnel and new music to just put something on the market and see how it goes Usually it is a thumbs down. But when a band like Exodus with very deep roots in the trash metal genre made their first album in 4 years they did two things. Number one, they brought back vocalist Steve "Zetro" Souza and number two, they went back to their roots .for the most part anyways. Understanding that one of the founding members of Exodus is Kirk Hammett from Metallica, it is easily understandable how an original line-up reformation just wasn't possible. But what they HAVE done is NOT SELL OUT. Exodus's current line-up of Gary Holt & Lee Altus on guitars, Jack Gibson on Bass, Tom Hunting on drums and as mentioned, Zetro handling lead vocalist duties might be the strongest line-up they have ever put on the stage. There is a lot to be said for these band members and their combined experience in the industry. It definitely sets up a win/win situation for the band on the road and a must listen to if you're a fan when it comes to their new release, Blood In, Blood Out.

Exodus is back! This is just a fantastic album. The first track, "Black 13" starts off the album with a major trash-kicking and just grabs you from there. The second song on the album is the title track, "Blood In, Blood Out." It just rips with torrid guitar work from Holt and Altus. Souza's vocals transcend the whole maylay and with that being said, is probably one the better tunes on this album. The album does not back off from there as you wind in to track #4, "Salt The Wound" which features none other than original member Kirk Hammett whom we all know is and has been the Lead Guitar player from Metallica for some 13 years plus now. Kirk just terrorizes this song and may I say he defines the term "Thrash Metal" with his mayhem on the guitar.

Songs on the back half of this album like "BTK" featuring Testament lead vocalist Chuck Billy is another bright spot. It showcases not only his vocals but the insane drumming of Tom Hunting and the flame throwing method in which Jack Gibson hammers his bass guitar. There are many other solid songs on this album as well like "Wrapped In The Arms Of Rage", "Numb" and "Collateral Damage" which is my favorite track on the album. The great thing about this album is you can tell from beginning to the end, it is ALL Exodus. The four years between albums probably has served this rock outfit well. One thing is for sure though. Exodus fans will not be let down by this very very strong effort.

Exodus has re-entered onto earth from the stratosphere still on fire, still ready to beat the hell out of you and probably better than ever. I loved this album and can't recommend it enough to thrash metalers globally. Presently, Exodus is on tour in South America selling out across the board to thousands of fans. You don't have to hold your breath; they are on their way to tour the US in just a couple of weeks. They are doing a tour with none other than Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies and start that tour on 11/11 in Oakland. Yours truly will be at the gig in Inglewood, CA at The Forum 11/14 to interview the guys. So keep an eye out for that around Turkey Day. On the "Hardcore Scale" I give Blood In, Blood Out 4 out of 5 stars. Get it! And remember to keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold and just keep rocking.
