Dimestore Prophets - Be Yourself
This EP's title track, for instances, puts the responsibility on individuals to change the things they don't like about themselves. It does no good to constantly complain about one's situation without taking the initiative to make productive and positive changes.
You can hear reggae influences more subtly during "Hey Darlin'," and much stronger during "Sunny Day." With the later, the group suggests that "We can be sunny." It's a happy, hopeful lyric. Whereas "Be Yourself" is directed at an individual, "Sunny Day" is pointed more at collective unity, with the message that people can live together in happiness; the kind of happiness that comes from being in a sunny day.
One imagines Dimestore Prophets appreciate sunny days more than most, as they're from Moses Lake, WA, a place where it likely rains a lot. However, if these guys can celebrate the sunshine, why can't the rest of us?
