Billy Strings & Don Julin - Fiddle Tune X

.
There's a little bit of a joke involved in this album's title which implies that there's going to be plenty of hot fiddle playing going on here. Actually, Strings is a guitarist and Julin plays mandolin so maybe the title just means that the songs found within would sound just fine with fiddle as the lead instrument. But just because there's no rosin flying doesn't mean this set isn't hot; to the contrary the pair pick up a storm on the murder ballad "Poor Ellen Smith," instrumental cut "Salt Creek"/"Old Joe Clark" and a live take on the old Stanley Brothers chestnut "Little Maggie," a tune covered over the years by everyone from Bob Dylan to Robert Plant. If you like classic bluegrass that's played fast and with fervor, Fiddle Tune X is for you.
