The Como Brothers - Baby Steps
These young men point to John Mayer, early Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz as similar artists and one can pick up on these influences throughout this release. For the most part, these are relatively frothy lyrical creations. Songs are primarily romantic pop musings, without a whole lot that's philosophical, political or overly heavy going on. Even songs like "Hang My Head" and "Late Nights," which find the brothers at least sounding serious, are in the end -- not overly emotionally taxing.
One song, "Gotta Be True," brings to mind Tower Of Power's "What Is Hip" with its funky guitar groove and soulful horns. It's distinctly retro, but still a whole lot of fun. It finds the guys letting loose and fully giving in to the music. It's the sort of track one wishes there was more of on Baby Steps. Instead of reaching for contemporary pop perfectionism, it sure would be good to hear The Como Brothers sounding like they're sweating just a little more. Oh, and having fun, too.
When music is so breezy that artists don't even seem like they're breaking a sweat, it just doesn't appear as though they're working nearly hard enough for our respect. Baby Steps is good, but let's just hope they put a little more elbow grease into their next release.
