MonaLisa Twins - When We're Together
The aural common denominator running throughout the MonaLisa Twins' full-length, When We're Together, is the vocal harmony these female siblings skillfully create together. Whether they're singing something gentle, as with The Everly Brothers-like "Dreams," or something more Beatles-esque, as on "This Boy Is Mine," it's the singing that always takes center stage.
No matter how close MonaLisa Twins resemble The Beatles, however, they always sound distinct from those four guys from Liverpool, due to their obvious femininity. Had there been British Invasion girl groups, perhaps this act would have certainly fit right in.
Although these girls sing extremely well together and write songs that are obviously inspired by a prior musical generation, they don't create music that lives up to the originals, nor do they have the sort of cool that makes them into winning throwbacks. This leaves When We're Together in an uncomfortable middle ground; somewhere between the past and the present.
This act has been compared to She & Him. But where She & Him finds a way to make the tried and true sound surprisingly new and relevant, MonaLisa Twins merely come off as just an okay approximation of pop music's glory days.
