Amelia Scalies - I Should've Known
Most will likely do a mental double-take when they hear Scalies' cover of My Chemical Romance's "Welcome to the Black Parade." She doesn't just sing it straight, but also gives the tune a proper, full arrangement complete with a marching band section. Who knew a girl could sing this one so well?
One wonders at times if Scalies wants to be a rocker or a folk-y. Is the real Scalies the punk-ish shouter that drives "Bottom of the Ocean," or the forlorn, sad sack that cries her way through "Phoenix"? There is a danger, at times, in doing too many things well because it can lead to the impression of stylistic indecisiveness. Heck, "Phoenix" even leads one to believe this girl could become a down home country singer, if she really wanted to.
Another fairly obvious Scalies influence is Haley Williams (of Paramore). Not only are their voices similar, but Scalies oozes emotional sincerity when she sings, much the way Williams can. There are more than enough talented singers out there now; all you need to do is spend a little time watching one of the many singing competitions on TV to realize that. But these shows sell us singers, without giving us true artists often enough. Scalies has potential to rise above the singer glut right now, which is a really good thing.
