Kittie - I've Failed You

Morgan Lander screams out the lyrics from this album's title track like she's Satan's girlfriend, confessing her unfaithfulness before her old man finds out on his own. "Look how I've failed youuu!!" Then again Lucifer likes bad girls; he'd probably be proud of a miserable failure. Metal fans certainly have plenty of reason to be proud of Kittie as there's no hint of failure here; these feline femme fatales can hold their own with the best of them these days, a far cry from the days when they might have been thought of as being not bad "for a bunch of girls." Much of I've Failed You focuses on the thrashy side of Kittie's repertoire where Lander delivers sore-throat vocals suited to the bash-your-teeth-in music that we've come to expect from the band. But Kittie has really matured and now can pull off cuts like "What Have I Done," a doom-y prog metal number where Lander's soaring vocals are more Pat Benatar than devil's main squeeze. "Empires (Part 1)" is impressive too; the acoustic guitar interlude leads into "Empires (Part 2)" where Lander utilizes both of her singing styles. In fact everything here is impressive; longtime fans will rejoice at I've Failed You and those who haven't heard Kittie for awhile will be very pleasantly surprised by what they hear.
