Slow Gun Shogun Review

by Gary Schwind

.
The rear cover of this CD includes the recommendation "crank this f***** up!" That's pretty sound advice. The guitar sound in "Spinning Wheels" is pretty reminiscent of Nashville Pussy. Slow Gun Shogun has a similar approach to music as well. This is all-out, raw, guitar-driven rock.

The band slows down the mood in the next song "Ace Rudy Haightley." This song feels a bit like an early Stones tune.

"Evan William's Blues" is Slow Gun Shogun's gritty spin on the blues. It's not necessarily Chicago or Delta Blues. Think more along the lines of Five Horse Johnson or Tenderloin.

This 6-song EP has some tunes that you will definitely want to crank. The band shows some pretty decent range, from balls-out rock to blues to mellow tunes like "Wish I Could Fix it All (with Some Hoodoo)." It is raw and short (only 19 minutes), but it's well-done and I wouldn't mind hearing a full-length album from this band.
