3LW songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler sued Swift in September, claiming the lyrics of her song "Shake it Off" infringed on those found in their 2001 track.
Swift's track includes the lines, "The players gonna play, play, play, play, play/ and the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate." 3LW's less wordy tune features the phrase, "Players, they gon' play/ and haters are gonna hate."
On Wednesday (Jan. 3), Swift's legal team moved to dismiss the copyright lawsuit, arguing that the phrase should be in the public domain, reports Variety. "There can be no copyright protection in 'playas, they gonna play and haters, they gonna hate,' because it would impermissibly monopolize the idea that players will play and haters will hate," Swift's lawyers wrote in the motion. The rapper faces up to five years behind bars when he's sentenced, with a court date scheduled for March 29 (via Rolling Stone). With DMX still dealing with rehab for drug and alcohol issues, however, that date is likely to be postponed.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim said DMX was "systematically cheating on his taxes" by insisting on cash payments whenever possible and diverting royalty payments to the bank accounts of others, including managers.
"No matter who you are or whatever fame you may have achieved, the law applies equally to all, and no one is exempt from the shared obligation to pay our taxes," Kim said. Read more

Sia has responded to the article in a series of Tweets, echoing some of the writer's same concerns. "This article poses a question I have asked myself often. I do check in with Maddie weekly about whether she wants this, and assure her if she ever wants it to stop it stops," Sia wrote. "It's a conversation we should all be having. Not just myself but all directors, stage parents and agents with their children, clients, charges. Maddie was already famous when I discovered her, but I have certainly expanded her exposure and feel responsible for that. I feel very protective of her and my goal is to empower her in whatever choices she makes."
"Some would argue a teenager can't or shouldn't be charged with making sound choices for themselves and so I do try to choose the best for her always. But I think this is an important conversation," the singer added, along with a link to the article. "What I learned from Maddie is that fame affects her differently than how it affected me. I can only trust that she is telling me the truth. If that changes, we stop." See the tweets
